ARCHIE - ARCHIE is an internet utility that allows users to search for files.

FTP - stands for FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL. This allows you to transfer
files to your system from a remote system on the internet. You may
also receive file directories of remote systems.

WWW - stands for World Wide Web. You can receive the full text versions of
any forms compatible web page on the internet. You just need the full
Universal Resource Locator name (called a URL). It usually starts off
      with something like: http://www.some.site/~some.web.page

FINGER - this program allows you to find out information about any valid
email address provided that the system on which the fingered user
         is on supports it.

When asked for a HOST name, please supply a valid internet IP address. This
can look like:
                schibbs.netusa.net
                whitehouse.gov
                199.67.41.2

When asked for a UNIX DIRECTORY NAME. please supply a valid Unix directory
name, ** NOT A DOS NAME **

                /PUB/simtel.msdos/BBSDOORS/really.cool.file
                /sys/PUB/this.is.a.very.long.name

When asked for a FILE name, again this is a Unix file name. Examples follow:

               MS_DOS.file.1
               notice.longer.than.8.characters
               nicks.files.here

When asked for a URL (Universal Resource Locator) you are expected to enter
the address of a valid World Wide Web Page. Some ** real world ** examples
follow.

              http://www.whitehouse.gov
              http://www.qdeck.com
              http://www.microsoft.com

When asked for an mail address in finger, you must supply a valid email
address. Even if you supply a valid email address, that doesn't mean that
a person or entity on the internet is "fingerable" The system that the
remote user is on must support fingering. For example, PCBoard does not
support finger, so you cannot finger any users on PCBoard systems.

Responses form servers:

Please note: The servers that exist are used by millions of people around
the world. When using WWW, responses are generally quick. Archie is also
rather quick. FINGER is the name, pretty qucik. FTP however takes more
time. Usually you will get back a file confirming that your request was
received and that it has been placed in a "queue." Usually it will take
anywhere from 6-24 hours to get the server to get to your position in
the queue. This is normal. There is no way to change this. If you've
send a request and have not gotten back anything at all, then send it
again.
