If you are going to experiment with long auto play simulations, a system that has a fast CPU speed is desirable. Blackjack Simulation can be loaded and run from a floppy disk drive but a hard disk is highly recommended. Note that the original IBM PC class of machines (8088 microprocessor), will show display glitches. Once the program is loaded in, disk access is only required if you are updating your Blackjack Simulation configuration file or saving to disk in Auto Data Save mode. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS IBM compatible PC, AT or PS/2 computer 420K of free system memory CGA-EGA-VGA graphics adapter Color Monitor SUGGESTED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 386-486 AT class of machine 420K of free system memory disk drive with 1-MB of free disk space VGA graphics adapter capable of being run in CGA mode VGA color monitor *Note:VGA Black and White is also supported FILES SUPPLIED WITH BLACKJACK SIMULATION NOTE: There are several sample play and bet strategies supplied with Blackjack Simulation. They are meant to be examples of how to enter and attach strategies to Blackjack Simulation. After you become familiar with the program you should either purchase a popular blackjack system or possibly develop your own system. Check the references at the end of the Users Guide for possible sources of blackjack systems. DiamondSoft does not sell blackjack systems and makes no claims as to the accuracy of the supplied sample blackjack systems. bjs.exe-Blackjack Simulation main program *.cfg-BJS configuration files *.ico-BJS icon files bjstread.txt-latest BJS information *.bet-bet strategy files bjscfg.lst-last configuration file loaded *.ply-play strategy files bjsstart.txt-ASCII text version of getting started Blackjack Simulation can be installed from a DOS prompt or from Windows. Insert the BJS diskette into the floppy drive desired and do one of the following. INSTALLING FROM A DOS PROMPT Go to the directory that you want to run BJS from and type in the following: copy [drive letter]:*.* NOTE:to create a directory such as c:\bjs, type MD c:\bjs For example, if your floppy is drive-a, you would type copy a:*.* RUNNING FROM A DOS PROMPT-To run BJS from a DOS prompt, you must be in the directory that contains the BJS files. Type BJS to run the program INSTALLING FROM WINDOWS NOTE: Blackjack Simulation can be run from a DOS box under Windows 3.1. Under Windows, the simulation speed decreases(about 10%)and you might lose the ability to shell to DOS. In Windows, use task switching to temporally exit the program. These are the only known differences when running Blackjack Simulation under Windows 3.1. If maximum simulation speed is not required, running from Windows is actually the preferred method for running Blackjack Simulation since long simulations can be run in a background mode by utilizing task switching. TO INSTALL BJS IN WINDOWS 3.1 Insert the BJS diskette in the appropriate floppy drive (usually drive A: or B:) Bring up File Manager (usually in MAIN program group) Determine directory that you want to run BJS from. If you have to create a new directory such as c:\bjs From the File Manager do the following: Click on "File" then click on "Create Directory". Type c:\bjs and then click on "OK" Select "file" then select "copy" If your BJS diskette is in drive a: and you want to run it from the directory c:\bjs. in the "From" box: type a:\*.* in the "To" box: type c:\bjs select "OK" The BJS files will now be copied from the diskette (a:) to the c:\bjs directory (your hard drive). After all the BJS files have been copied, you can close the File Manager. SETTING UP A WINDOWS DOS BOX After the BJS files have been copied to your hard drive (either from the DOS prompt or by using File Manager), you can set up BJS to run under Windows. For more information on setting up a DOS application to run under a Windows DOS box refer to your Windows documentation. The following is one way to create a DOS box for Blackjack Simulation: Bring up the PIF editor (usually in the MAIN program group) by double clicking on it's Icon. The "PIF Editor" window should be displayed. You must type in the appropriate values. A typical entry would look something like this: Program Filename: c:\bjs\bjs.exe EMS Memory: 0 Window Title: BJS XMS Memory: 0 Video memory: Text Display Usage: Windowed Memory Requirements: 420KB Close Window on Exit: yes After typing in the setup data, click on "File", then click on "Save" Type in the "File Name" box: bjs.pif Click on "OK" and then click on "File" and finally click on "Exit". After creating a DOS box for Blackjack Simulation, you must now select what Program Group you want to place the BJS in and also select a Icon. To add BJS to an existing program group: Select which Program Group you want to run Blackjack Simulation from by double clicking on the desired Program Group Icon. Click on "file" then click on "new". Finally click on "program item". The "Program Item Properties" window should be displayed. You must now type in the appropriate values. A typical "Program Item Properties" entry for Blackjack Simulation should look something like this: Description: BJS Command line: c:\bjs\bjs.exe Working directory: c:\bjs Click on "OK". The "Change Icon" window will be displayed. Click on "OK" and then type in "bjs1.ico" and finally click on "OK". Click on "OK" again to close the "Program Item Properties" window. The BJS Icon should now appear in the Program Group that you have selected. RUNNING FROM A WINDOWS DOS BOX To run BJS, bring up the appropriate Program Group and double click on the icon that you have assigned to Blackjack Simulation. After the program loads in, you setup the BJS windows box by clicking on the upper left button inside the BJS windows box. Some suggestions: Set the window size to "Maximize". Under "Settings"-set the "Display Options" to "Window". Under "Fonts"-select "8 x 12" and set the "Save Settings" to "yes". Note that the suggested settings are typical and might not be appropriate for your present setup. Play around with the "Settings" and "Fonts" for effect. CONFIGURATION FILES The purpose of the configuration file is to allow each user to setup Blackjack Simulation to suit their particular needs. Up to 48 different configuration files are allowed. The configuration files (*.cfg) and the bjscfg.lst file must always be in same directory as Blackjack Simulation (bjs.exe) for the program to load and run properly. The bjscfg.lst file contains the last configuration file name that was utilized. When the BJS program is loaded in, the configuration file name saved in the bjscfg.lst file will be loaded in. You can save your existing game setup to a configuration file from the following program locations. From the Idle Program Control Menu. From the Main Game Play Menu. From the City Editor Exit Menu. The following program functions are saved to the configuration file: Directory and file names of up to 16 attached playing strategies. Directory and file names of up to 16 attached betting strategies. Description of the current configuration file. Current play strategies that are selected for players 1 through 7. Current bet strategies that are selected for players 1 through 7. Current names selected for players 1 through 7. Current play mode for players 1 through 7. Number of players selected. Current default rules for all cities and custom mode. Current default city rules selected. Current playing parameters selected. Current status of all statistical menu controls. Current status of all auto printer and disk save parameters. Current status of all game controls. Current status of all tutor mode setup functions. The Idle Program Control menu will also display your current loaded configuration file. Every time you load Blackjack Simulation, the game setup will default to the last configuration file used. PLAY STRATEGY FILES Several sample playing strategies are included with Blackjack Simulation. Note that the strategies included with Blackjack Simulation are just samples. If you find a strategy you like, you should purchase the complete system in order to get the full benefits from the strategy. You can create new play strategies or modify existing play strategies by utilizing the built in play strategy editor (see Using The Play Strategy Editor). The selected play strategy file essentially tells the computer what strategy to implement for all situations that come up while playing blackjack. Some play situations are as follows: When to hit or stand (good) on a hand. When to double down with a hard or soft total. When to split a hand. When to take Insurance. When to surrender. If the strategy utilizes card counting, the following information must also be supplied: The card weights (value) of every card. How the count is generated (number of cards or decks left adjustment). Whether to use rounded or absolute count values. Which count to use (running or true count). If counting aces, how an ace rich or poor condition affects the count. A table of all possible play situations with numeric or alpha break points. With Blackjack Simulation, you can attach up to 16-playing strategies to the program. When a play strategy is attached to BJS, it becomes part of the program and is automatically loaded by the configure file every time you start Blackjack Simulation. These files will always have a PLY extension on them. For example, "samply01.ply", is a basic strategy included with Blackjack Simulation. If you have more than 16 play strategies, they can easily be attached by utilizing the play strategy editor (see section on Using The Play And Bet Editor). All play strategies must be generated by the play strategy editor in order to be used in Blackjack Simulation. BET STRATEGY FILES Several sample betting strategies are included with BJS. You can create new bet strategies or modify existing bet strategies by utilizing the built in bet strategy editor. All bets are generated in unit size nomenclature and are multiplied by the players unit size to get a dollar value. For example, if a players unit size is $5.00, a betting strategy generating a bet of 4-units would yield a bet of $20.00. Some of the different types of betting strategies that can be implemented utilizing the bet strategy editor are as follows: Flat bet (always bet the same amount). Pyramid (keep doubling your bet until you win). Hand depth (bet amount is a function of how deep in the deck you are) Count based (amount to bet is a function of the current card count). Last hand status (amount to bet is a function of the results of the last hand played). Combinations of current count and last hand status. Multiple hand strategy(player plays more than 1-hand under certain conditions). Start/Stop Game play (jump in/out) at selected hand depths, true count, running counts and card deck shuffles. The betting strategies are attached to Blackjack Simulation the same way as the playing strategies are. Attached bet strategies are automatically loaded every time you start the program and have a BET extension on their file name. For example, "sambet03.bet" is a true count betting strategy that is included with Blackjack Simulation. All bet strategies must be generated by the bet strategy editor. PRINTERS SUPPORTED The Blackjack Simulation Auto Save mode supports two types of generic printers. Hewlett Packard LaserJet II Data menus per page: 2 or 3 or 12 The 12-menus per page requires a font such as the AFS 3.6 Pt as supplied with a Pacific Data Products 25 in ONE! III font cartridge (very small font) IBM Proprinter Data menus per page: 2 or 3 The printer must be setup for LPT1 and utilize a parallel port. Serial port printers are not supported by Blackjack Simulation. If your printer is not supported, you can still save data by setting the auto save mode to disk file. Saving to a disk file is actually the preferred method since it is much faster to look at the saved file with your favorite editor or word processor and then printout only the data you want a hard copy record of. In Auto Save mode several pages of data can be printed. It is recommended that you read the Auto Save Setup section before using your printer in Auto Save mode. It is possible to generate over 90-pages of data during one Auto Save cycle. RUNNING BJS FOR THE FIRST TIME IMPORTANT NOTE: The bjscfg.lst and configuration(*.cfg) files MUST ALWAYS be in the same directory that the main bjs.exe program is located. Also, the play and bet strategies must initially be in this directory. After the initial loading, the play and bet strategies can be moved to some other location, if desired, but it is recommended that they be kept in the same directory as bjs.exe, bjscfg.lst and the *.cfg files. After starting BJS, the program will announce itself by displaying the BJS title page. A message will be displayed that it is loading the program configuration file and the attached play and betting strategy files. If the program can not find the configuration files or any of the atttached strategy files, a error message will be displayed. NOTE: Whenever a menu appears with highlighted lines, there are two different ways to select a menu item to execute: method-1: Press the key corresponding to the first character of a line (will be a different color) method-2: Use the arrow keys to select the menu item to execute and then press the "Enter" key. After the configuration and attached strategy tables have been loaded the next menu to appear will be the Idle Program Control Menu. The current configuration file name and description presently loaded will also be displayed. This menu allows you to select one of the following functions: Tutor Practice Menu-the main blackjack tutor menu Begin New Game Series-starts a new game sequence Edit Play And Bet Strategy Tables-the built in strategy editor for entering and modifying the play and bet strategies. Program Title Page-displays the program title page Shell To DOS-temporary exit to DOS (Note: to renter BJS, you must type "Exit" from the DOS prompt). Quit-will quit BJS and return to the DOS prompt or the Windows Program Manager. Reload BJS Configuration-displays a menu of available configuration files. You can reload any of the configuration files that are shown. Note that all files with a CFG extension are displayed but only CFG files generated by Blackjack Simulation are valid. If you try to load a invalid CFG file, an error message will be displayed. The reload function is normally used to change your game setup to a previous saved game setup configuration before you start a new simulation. Update BJS Configuration-will bring up a menu that allows you to save the current game setup to the configuration file of you choice. Note that by pressing the Alt-M keys you can switch between a color and a black/white display. The intent here is to allow a laptop black and white computer to display properly. It is strongly suggested that a VGA color monitor be utilized for clarity. NEW GAME SEQUENCE WALK THROUGH The following is a walk through on how to setup Blackjack Simulation for existing attached play and bet strategies. For example, let's setup Blackjack Simulation for the following game conditions: Las Vegas Strip default rules...Normal casino conditions Two players in the game. Player-1 is to be named Casual. Plays basic strategy...Always makes the same bet (flat bet). Unit size (basic bet size) is to be $10.00. Player-2 is to be named Counter. Plays a count system...Bets the true count Unit size is to be $25.00. From the Idle Menu select "Begin New Game Series". SELECTING THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS IN THE GAME NOTE: As a general guideline, most menus will have a "M"=controls menu displayed on the bottom line. Pressing the "M" key will display all valid controls available for this menu. Most control type menus are of the "quick" type where pressing a valid key will immediately execute that function. If you just want the menu to disappear, pressing any other key will accomplish this. For alpha type controls, such as "B", "D", etc., either upper or lower case can always be used. Upon selecting a new game series, the following message will appear: "Select the number of players in game" Since in our example we want two players in the game, do one of the following: use the "arrow" keys to highlight the "2" line and then press "Enter" or just press the "2" key to select two players CHANGING THE NAME OF EACH PLAYER Player-1 is to be called "Casual" and player-2 is to be called "Counter". Press the "Enter" key to continue. SELECTING GAME PLAY RULES The Game Playing Rules selection menu has four city default playing conditions and one custom rules section. All of the city defaults may be changed to anything you desire by using the city default editor. The rules in any given city are in a constant state of flux and will usually vary from casino to casino in the same city. The default rules supplied with BJS reflect rules that were in effect when the program was last updated. Since we just want the normal Las Vegas Strip default rules: Use the arrow keys to highlight "LAS VEGAS STRIP". Then press the "Enter" key. SELECTING PLAY PARAMETERS In this section you can vary most of the casino playing conditions such as house limit, minimum bet allowed, etc. To keep our walk through simple, we will only change each players bet unit size and use the program defaults for the rest of the play parameters. To set player-1 (Casual) to a unit size of $10: Use the "Arrow" keys to select the unit size line. The current unit size will be highlighted. Use the "Space Bar" to select "Unit size: #1 Norm Casual". Type in the value 010. To set player-2 (Counter) to a unit size of $25: Use the "Space Bar" to select "Unit size: #2 Norm Counter". Type in the value 025. Verify that the "Minimum bet allowed" line is $010 or less. Verify that the "Number of burn cards" line is set to 01. Verify that the "Auto data save on" line is set to "no". Press the "Enter" key. You should now be in the manual game play mode. MANUAL GAME PLAY A message "Casual place your bet please" should be displayed Under "NAME", Casual and Counter should be displayed and Casual's name should be highlighted. Under "BET" Casual's bet should be highlighted and show "0,000.00" Counter's bet will also show "0,000.00" but will not be highlighted. From this point in the program you have numerous options but for our walk through we will play a couple of blackjack hands in manual mode and show you some of the options that are available to you. Then we will play a 25,000 hand sequence in Auto Play mode. Press the "T" key. The "Count Display Box" should toggle on and off. The count display box shows pertinent information required for most count systems. Press the "C" key. The bet strategy that the current player is using will be displayed along with the correct bet that the player should make. Press any key to return to game play. Press the "F1" key. All game controls and menus available will be displayed along with the current status of certain game controls. Press the "Enter" or "Esc" key to return to game play. Type in "10". This is Casual's basic bet size. Press the "Enter" key. Counters bet should now be highlighted. For Counters bet, press the "L" key. The "L" key will automatically use the last bet placed by the current player for the current bet. We could also type in "25" and then press the "Enter" key. This is Counter's basic bet size. The first hand should now be dealt to both players. Press the "C" key. This display will show you the correct playing strategy that Casual should implement for this play situation (referred to as the "Peek" mode). Press the "Esc" or "Enter" key to return to game play. Now go ahead and play a few hands and take a look at the various Game Play Menus to familiarize yourself with them. (a list of Game Play Menus available can be displayed by pressing the "M" key). Press the "F10" key. This will bring up a list of the Statistical menus available. Scan through the menus and note that the results of the hands you have played are now totaled. Pressing the "Enter" key will take you back to the main game play display. AUTO GAME PLAY Now lets play a sequence of 25,000 hands using the same setup. From the main game play display: (where you play blackjack manually) Press the "F6" key. The Auto Play Menu should now be displayed. Press the "P" key. You should be back in the Play Parameter display. On the "Auto stop at hand number" line, type in "00,025,000". Make sure that the "Auto data save on" line is set to "no". Press the "Enter" key. You should now be back at the "Auto Play" menu. Set the Auto Play status to "Auto" by pressing the "A" key (toggle). Set the Update Display Rate to "every 100 hands" by pressing the "U" key (toggle).
