This will prompt you for the source (where the installation files are located) and target (where you want the program files to be installed) directories. Next, you are asked if you want to create a Program Manager group and icons. The installation process then begins (you will be prompted if any of the program files being installed to your Windows System subdirectory already exist. You are given the choice of replacing them or leaving them be. This is a feature all install programs should have, however, many do not. They simply overwrite the system files (even if the one they are replacing is a newer version!)). Once installation is complete the Edit Master program launches and calls up its "readme" text file for you to view. (Don't forget to delete the files in the temporary directory once the program is installed. They are no longer needed.) Features -------- Listing/Description of Features: Edit Master for Windows is a replacement for Windows Notepad that is able to open multiple text documents (.TXT, .INI, .BAT, etc.) of ANY size. It has a customizable Toolbar with buttons for the most frequently used functions (New File, Open File, Save File, Cut, Copy, Paste, Find/Replace, Undo/Redo, Select Fonts, Set Options, Print, call up Help, change the case of selected text to upper or lower or switch the existing case, Tile Windows Horizontally or Vertically, Cascade Windows, Select Columns, Delete files, Line Select and Normal Select). Its File Menu has options for creating New files, Opening/Closing files, Saving/Save As files, Inserting files, Deleting files, Printing files and Exiting Edit Master. There is also a list of the 9 most recently used files which can be accessed with a single mouse click. Another option on this menu is the Frequent Files feature. This lets you add files (or groups of files) to the Frequent Files list for easy access. It even lets you give the files (or groups) stored here descriptive (not DOS limited) names. Its Edit Menu has options for Undo/Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Paste into a New File, Paste ASCII Values, Delete, Find, Find Next, Replace, Select All, Time/Date Stamp, Go To Line number, Trim (left, right, both), Convert Case, Shift Text, and Convert Text (make into HEX file, UNIX Conversion, ROT13 Encode, and Invert). Edit Master's View Menu options include choosing if the Toolbar and/or Status Bar are displayed, Display Font selection, Printer Font selection, Setting/Going to Bookmarks, and Grep (this prompts you for a string and then opens a new window displaying all the lines from the currently open text file containing that string). The Options Menu lets you configure Edit Master to you own needs, set the Print Options, customize the Toolbar, set Word Wrap/Permanent Word Wrap, set Auto Indent, Drag/Drop, Save file as UNIX file, and enter the selection mode (none, normal, line or column). The Windows Menu has options for Cascade, Tile Horizontally/Vertically, Arranging Icons, Closing All open Windows, Saving All Open Files, and has a list of currently open Windows. The Help Menu has the Contents, About Box, and Registration details options. Help/Documentation Rating: 8 Edit Master comes with "readme" text and Windows format Help files which adequately answer most of the questions that you may have about the program. Summary ------- Edit Master version 2.5 is one of the best text editor/viewers you can find in your searches of cyberspace. It is packed with really nice features. My personal favorites are its ability to load in ANY size text file, its ability to automatically paste text - copied to the clipboard - into a new file, and its GREP and Bookmark features. You will definitely not be disappointed downloading and registering Edit Master (especially with the small registration fee of only $15.00). (NOTE: Version 2.6 of Edit Master should be available for downloading in the near future. Here is a list of its new features: Adds pattern matching and line number options to the GREP utility, adds ability to goto a GREPped line when line numbers are used, disables documents being GREPped to prevent errors, adds saving of GREP statements for re-use, changes permanent word wrap so it re-justifies paragraphs, adds macros, has improved drag and drop so it works under Windows NT (this also fixes the modal form errors), disables column select when a variable width font is in use, automatically turns off column mode when a variable width font is selected, fixes bug which could occur on customized toolbar screens, adds a function to strip HTML codes, fixes error if VBPRINT.DLL is not in the same directory, changes highlight colors of edit boxes when system colors change, added ".LOG" functionality - like in NotePad, removes errors that occured when loading/unloading under Windows 95, extracts all tool bar bitmaps so the user can customize them, and adds toggling of modified indicator by double clicking on it.) Problems and Suggestions ------------------------ List of Problems found: There were no conflicts, General Protection Faults (GPF's), or program errors encountered during my evaluation of this software. Suggestions for improvements: A "print preview" feature would make a nice addtion to this excellent text viewer/editor. (NOTE: I have contacted Princeton Computer Consulting's programmer, Brad Murray, and there are plans of incorporating a print preview feature into the next Windows 95 and Windows NT versions of Edit Master.) Technical Support ----------------- Technical Support Rating: 8.5 Description: Questions I had about the program were answered within 24 hours (via E-Mail). What do you get when you register? ---------------------------------- You will receive the key code which will release the registration reminders from the program. If you would like the most recent version mailed to you, include an additional $5.00 (U.S. currency). This entitles you to a license of one copy of Edit Master for use on any one computer at any one time. Technical support is available via electronic or snail mail.
