SHAREWARE FACTS _______________ Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distri- bution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money back guarantee, if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it. Your registration of a Shareware copy of KOPYIT is greatly appreciated. Registration pays for the past and future development of this product. Shareware is user supported software. THE LEGAL STUFF _______________ USERS OF "KOPYIT" MUST ACCEPT THIS DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY: "KOPYIT" IS SUPPLIED AS IS. THE AUTHOR DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITA- TION, THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE. THE AUTHOR ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES, DIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL, WHICH MAY RESULT FROM THE USE OR MISUSE OF "KOPYIT". GOOD DATA PROCESSING PROCEDURE DICTATES THAT ANY PROGRAM BE THOROUGHLY TESTED WITH NON-CRITICAL DATA (2) BEFORE RELYING ON IT. THE USER MUST ASSUME THE ENTIRE RISK OF USING "KOPYIT" INCLUDING THE FILE COMPRESSION PROGRAM "LHA". ANY LIABILITY OF THE SELLER WILL BE LIMITED EXCLUSIVELY TO PRODUCT REPLACEMENT OR REFUND OF PURCHASE PRICE. READ THE LHA.DOC FILE INCLUDED WITH THIS DISK FOR DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY AND OTHER USES OF THE FILE COMPRESSION PROGRAM "LHA" BY THE AUTHORS OF LHA. CHOICE OF LAW _____________ THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE GOVERNED BY THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS AND SHALL INURE TO THE BENEFIT OF TDF SOFTWARE AND ANY SUCCESSORS, ADMINISTRATORS, HEIRS AND ASSIGNS. ANY ACTION OR PROCEEDING BROUGHT BY EITHER PARTY AGAINST THE OTHER ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE BROUGHT ONLY IN A STATE OR FEDERAL COURT OF COMPETENT JURISDICTION LOCATED IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY, ILLINOIS. THE PARTIES HEREBY CONSENT TO IN PERSONAM JURISDICTION OF SAID COURTS. "KOPYIT" is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality software with- out high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find that you are using "KOPYIT" and continue to use "KOPYIT" after a reasonable trial period, you must make a regis- tration payment of $9.95 to TDF Software. The $9.95 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time. Commercial users of "KOPYIT" must register and pay for their copies of "KOPYIT" within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn. Site (Multi user) Licenses are available. You are encouraged to pass a copy of "KOPYIT" along to your friends for evaluation. (Shareware version) Please encourage them to register their copy if they find it useful. You are authorized to make an archive (backup copy) of the original KOPYIT diskette (registered version) to safeguard your investment. (3) Requirements ____________ KOPYIT must be run from a hard drive. Requires: 400K ram, DOS 3.2+, 286+ processor, EGA, VGA, or MONO monitor. Using KOPYIT ____________ The two files needed to run KOPYIT are: KD.EXE & KOPYIT.EXE. Both files MUST reside in the same directory on your hard drive. To start the program type: KD {press ENTER} KOPYIT is a utility used to make exact copies of floppy disks "without having to change disks several times". It writes an image file of your floppy disk to your hard drive and then writes this image back to another floppy disk (same drive, same format) as many times as you wish. When you exit the program the image file is erased. On-line help is available by pressing the F1 key. Choosing "Setup" from the main menu allows you to: __________________________________________________ 1) Ask DOS to verify all writes to disk. Using verify is much slower. KOPYIT uses an internal verification that is very accurate. You choose the level of protection you want. 2) Choose to turn the warning sound on or off. 3) Prompt before overwriting a disk that contains files. If you turn this option off then be very careful that you have the correct destination disk in the drive to be copied to. Use the arrow keys to hi-light the drive letter that the disk you want to copy is in, A: or B: then press ENTER. You will be prompted as you proceed. The following file is created and then erased by KOPYIT. "TEMP.CPY" After making a disk image KOPYIT will prompt you to save the image for future use. If you choose yes then then you will enter up to eight characters for a file name and the new named file will be compressed by the program "LHA". You will than be asked to leave a description of the disk image file. You can enter a single line or a 10 page report. It is a good idea to leave a detailed description so you can remember exactly just what is in the file. The description can be viewed at any time. (4) When you "open" a disk image file several things happen. The file is "expanded", the size of the expanded file is calculated and compared to the types of disk drives on your computer and you are prompted to enter the number of copies needed and to put the appropriate blank disk in the drive. Formatting a Floppy Disk ________________________ Now calls DOS to "Unconditionally" format your floppy disks. You can format as many as you need. Formats supported: 360K, 720K, 1.2M, 1.44M. All you have to know is which drive and whether your disk is Hi or Low density. Hi-density disks are 1.2M, 1.44M, and 2.88M. The DOS format utility will let you use a disk that has bad sectors on it, but IF it does have any bad sectors then KOPYIT will not duplicate to it. Disks formatted with this command can not be unformatted. COPY A drive to B drive or COPY B drive to A drive ________________________ Copies files (excluding: subdirectories) from one floppy disk drive to another. Kopyit will attempt to copy all archive, hidden, read only, & system files. For other than archive (normal) files the source disk must not be write protected. This is not a diskcopy. COPY A drive to A drive or COPY B drive to B drive ________________________ Copies files (excluding: subdirectories) from one floppy disk drive to a subdirectory on your hard drive. You will then be prompted to place the destination disk in the drive. This is useful for copying from one size disk to another, using the same drive. Kopyit will attempt to copy all archive, hidden, read only, & system files. For other than archive (normal) files the source disk must not be write protected. This is not a diskcopy. Hint: To copy a disk that has subdirectories on it use the "Run a DOS command" below. Type in the command: XCOPY A:\*.* B: /E /V Type the command in the same format as it is shown. Substitute the correct drive letter in the above command for A: and B: where the first drive is the source disk and the second is the destination disk. The /E switch copies all subdirectories (even if empty) and the /V (optional) asks DOS to verify all writes to disk. (5) DOS Commands: ______________ Date _____ Prompt DOS to set the system date Run a DOS command __________________ You type in any DOS command you want to have executed. Time _____ Prompt DOS to set the system time Set Disk Serial Number _______________________ Beginning with DOS version 4.0 a unique number made up of the current date and time is inserted onto the diskette at the time the media is formatted. This number is always converted to the hexadecimal number system. With this option you can set your own unique serial number onto a master disk. Each time you use this function the serial number is incremented by 1. You will be given the hexadecimal conversion of your number. Write this onto the master diskette label. This function does not work on network drives. Set Disk Volume Label ______________________ Use up to eleven characters to enter your own unique "label" onto a master diskette.
