BARRAGE! This is a network ready version of a new battleship style game that allows you to play over a shared file system or against the computer. The file system can be with DECNET, TCP/IP, Novell, or any other network that allows both you and your opponent to write to the same file in a directory. You MUST have vbrun300.dll installed on your system for BARRAGE!.EXE to work. ---- Installing BARRAGE!.EXE ----- 1. extract it from BARRAGE!.ZIP, your downloader may automatically do this 2. copy BARRAGE!.EXE to the directory in which you would like it to reside 3. create an icon in the Program Manager that points to BARRAGE!.EXE (File->New) ---- Starting BARRAGE!.EXE ----- 1. Start the program by double clicking the icon. If this is an unregistered copy of BARRAGE!.exe, a shareware document will be displayed. Send in registration fee, and you will be given registration instructions to remove this message. Until it is registered, you can hit "OK" to go on. 2. The connection window will display. * In the Name box, type in your unique name. * In the Filename box, type the same network filename that the other person is using. If it is new, this will create it. * The seconds box specifies how many seconds to wait before checking the file for updates. Good numbers are 1, 3, or 5. * Hit OK once you have filled in the information. If the name is blank, or the directory is wrong, OK will not do anything. The playing board will now be available. 3. Object and rules of the game The object of the game is to strategically place your ships on the playing field, then as you take turns, try to sink all your opponent's ships before your opponent sinks yours. * Place your ships on the bottom playing field. You can place your ships vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. You have 4 ships: Battleship length 4 Cruiser length 3 Submarine length 2 Destroyer length 2 Place your ships by clicking and holding the left mouse button on an open square, then dragging the mouse to the appropriate distance away from the start square. The line will indicate when your ship is valid. Once you have placed all your ships, click the button "Commit Ships" When both players have committed their ships, you will be able to start shooting. * Both players specify where their shots will go for this turn. The Barrage! style of battleship is such that you fire a salvo of several shots into the air on the same turn. You will be notified how many hits on each of your opponent's ships were made, but you do not know which shot made contact. You start with 7 shots each. Click on 7 different open spots in the top window. Once you have located all your available shots, select the "Launch" button at the bottom of the screen. If you change your mind before you launch you can re-select the salvos you just made and place them somewhere else. Once both players have launched their shots, both will be notified of hits. * When one of your ships is sunk, the number of shots you are allowed on your next turn will be decremented by the size of the ship that was sunk. If your battleship sinks, you will have 3 fewer shots cruiser 2 submarine 1 destroyer 1 * The winner is the player who sinks the other persons ships first. ---- Notes ------ barrage!.exe will leave the files out on the network file system. If you specify the same file at a later time, barrage! will delete it and start over. Playing against another person on a single computer can be awkwardly achieved by running barrage twice, specifying the same filename (it could be on the c: drive). Each player has their own window to use. ---- Shareware ---- This is a shareware application, please support this project and others like it by sending $5.00 to: Paul Sundquist P.O.
