The options from the main menu are : o View READ.ME : Displays the read.me file that gives the latest information on the software. o Instructions : Displays the instructions for the game. o Music Device : Configures the music support for the program. o Sound Device : Configures the sound support for the program. o Version Info : Displays release info for this program. This includes the version, serial number and copyright. o System Notes : Displays information regarding the computer system and the support of required or optional devices. o Print Order Form : Generate a hard copy of the BACKLASH order form. o Run BACKLASH : Starts the game. Select the appropriate options before running the software. Exit the configuration program by pressing . :MUSIC DEVICE MUSIC DEVICE ßßßßßßßßßßßßßß BACKLASH supports FM music synthesis on AdLib compatible sound cards. Most cards, including any 100% Sound Blaster compatible cards, support AdLib music. If the sound card is not compatible with the AdLib sound card, select NONE. :SOUND DEVICE SOUND DEVICE ßßßßßßßßßßßßßß BACKLASH supports digital sound effects on Sound Blaster 1.x compatible sound cards. For users without a compatible sound card, the PC speaker can be used for sound effects. Selecting NONE disables all sound effects in the game. :SOUND CARD ADDRESS SOUND CARD ADDRESS ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß Configures the base address of the sound card. The default base address for Sound Blaster compatible sound cards is 220. The base address MUST be set properly for sound effects to be heard in the game. The menu defaults to the currently selected address, the address indicated by the BLASTER environment variable, or the default address. Refer to the documentation for the sound card if the base address is not known and the Blaster environment variable is not set. Some of the available addresses are not valid for all sound cards. :SOUND CARD INTERRUPT SOUND CARD INTERRUPT ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß Configures the interrupt number for the sound card. The default interrupt for Sound Blaster compatible sound cards is 5. If the interrupt number is not set properly, sounds will not function or may be truncated. The menu defaults to the currently selected interrupt, the interrupt indicated by the BLASTER environment variable, or the default value. Refer to the documentation for the sound card if the interrupt is not known and the BLASTER environment variable is not set. Some of the available interrupt numbers are not valid for all sound cards. :SOUND CARD DMA SOUND CARD DMA CHANNEL ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß Configures the DMA channel for the sound card. The default DMA channel for Sound Blaster compatible sound cards is 1. If the DMA channel is not set properly, sounds will not function. The menu defaults to the currently selected channel, the channel indicated by the BLASTER environment variable, or the default value. Refer to the documentation for the sound card if the DMA channel is not known and the BLASTER environment variable is not set. Some of the available DMA channels are not valid for all sound cards. :SYSTEM NOTES SYSTEM NOTES ßßßßßßßßßßßßßß BACKLASH requires at least 500k of available DOS conventional memory. Run "MEM" from the command line and refer to the largest executable program size to determine if the required memory is available. BACKLASH also requires 750k of XMS 2.0 extended memory OR an equivalent amount of EMS 3.2 expanded memory. Refer to the DOS manual if the requirements are not available. BACKLASH requires a 386, 486 or Pentium processor. A VGA or compatible video card is also required. A joystick is optional and support for 4 button joysticks ( eg: Gravis Game Pad ) is supplied. A Microsoft compatible mouse is also optional but recommended. If you are sick of this technical mumbo-jumbo, you could be playing SLACKMAN. Press from the main menu. :RUN BACKLASH ERROR RUNNING BACKLASH ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß The program was unable to execute the BACKLASH game program BL.EXE. The file BL.EXE must be in the same directory as the setup program and that directory must be the current working directory. Try leaving the configuration program and running BACKLASH from the command line. Enter BL.EXE at the command prompt. :PRINTER MENU PRINTER MENU ßßßßßßßßßßßßßß Select the printer port to which the printer is connected. Most users have the printer connected to LPT1. Network users or users with multiple printers may wish to use LPT2 or LPT3. :MENU USING MENUS ßßßßßßßßßßßßß Use the arrow keys to move highlight the desired menu selection. Press to accept the highlighted option. Press to abandon the menu without making a selection. :END
