Gnatts! A Screen Saver for Windows, and Windows 95 by NovaLight Software. © NovaLight Software 1995. Programmed by Iain Whyte. Reason: Well, if you have ever played with Linux, and X Windows, you will know that the X windows Screen Lock, Xlock that comes with X has a whole bunch of nice Screen Savers. The one that caught my eye was called 'SWARM'. I fell instantly in love with it. Not being a Linux person - more of a Windows fan, It was next to useless to me. Solution: After buying all 3 AfterDarks, and several other crappy screen savers, I decided to sit down and nut out how the original SWARM was done. Normally, most things in Linux come with 'C' source code, but SWARM, unfortunately, couldn't be found. I had to start from scratch. Several attempts later I came up with what you have now - something almost identical to the original - At least close enough to satisfy my craving for the thing. Installation: Windows 3.x.x : Very easy. Copy the GNATTS.SCR into your Windows directory. When there: Select and setup your new screen saver, go into the control panel, select DESKTOP and choose the 'Gnatts Screen Saver" from the list. Windows 95 : Even easier, open the folder containing the files, and click the 'right' mouse button on the .scr file. In the Object Menu (which pops up) select "Install". Now, you can click the setup or options button, and a dialog will appear with a couple of settings in it. Play till you have it just right for your systems speed, and your personal preferences. The defaults are what look the best on my system (DX4/100). Developement: Gnatts was originally a SS called XSWARM written for the X11 window system on Unix machines. I liked it, and without the source, tried to duplicate it. First attempts were made using Borland Pascal 7.0, in 320 x 200 x 256 colour mode, and once the algorithims were right, I transplanted the code to DELPHI (Borlands visual pascal). The SS was progammed on a DX4/100 AMD vesa PC, with 8Mb, Under the new Windows 95 operating system. Shareware: This screen saver is shareware, therefore it costs peanuts for your piece of mind. I spent many hours getting this SS done, and I would really appreaciate the acknowledgement of you, the computer populace.
