Goldman 2180 Bolton St. Bronx, NY 10462-1332 (718) 823-9873 May 1, 1996 Internet Address = Twostate@intercom.com One of my pet peeves, when looking at software, is trying to identify what it is. Usually I have to scan through a ton of documentation to find out what the program is and what it does. So ... WHAT IS DAY 9.10? DAY 9.10 is a set of 12 ÿdata bases covering each month of ÿthe year. It is a storehouse of birthdates, events, holidays, and obituaries. HOW DO I RUN DAY 9.10? There ÿare ÿtwo ÿexcellent programs to run DAY 9.10 ÿon ÿa ÿDOS ÿbased system. The best is NEWDAYPC in that it implements all of the features of ÿmy data. NEWDAYPC has recently been updated after 5 years (Version 4.9 in March, 1995). TODAY is the original program by Patrick Kincaid and although has been update in July, ÿ1994, ÿit still doesn't support the ÿfeatures I desire (certain colors keys, ÿrandomness or ÿlimit ÿof events, ÿÿnot allowing for certain groupings (!,D,H,I,Y). ÿÿTherefore unless ÿyou ÿare prepared to edit my files you may ÿget ÿsome ÿstrange results. ÿWith 9.10 I ÿhave bundled the latest version of Newdaypc in DAY910-1, and the latest version of Today in DAY910-2. OKAY, B-U-T HOW DO I RUN DAY 9.10? You need DAY910-1.ZIP through DAY910-6.ZIP. You also need an unzipper which ÿis available on just about every DOS BBS. ÿUnzip all the files in ÿa ÿdirectory named TODAY. ÿUnzip NEWDAYPC in the same ÿdirectory. Just type NEWDAYPC and you will get the days events (based on the date set on your computer). IF you want a specific date type NEWDAYPC MMDD (MMDD is the month and day (ie NEWDAYPC 0101 is for January 1). HOW IS THE DATA STORED IN DAY 9.10? The ÿdata ÿis ÿin pure ASCII and probably can be ÿtransported ÿto ÿany computer. ÿÿEach ÿdata item is one line long and follows ÿa ÿspecified format. The first character is either !,B,D,H,I,R,S or Y. (!-Printable information, ÿÿÿB-Birth ÿÿDate, ÿÿÿD-Death ÿÿDate, ÿÿÿH-Holiday, ÿÿÿI- Interfaith/Religious Day of Observance, ÿR-Reminder, ÿS-Special Event, Y-Your ÿReminders). ÿThe next 8 characters (2-9) is a date ÿ(MMDDYYYY, MMDD____ or MMDDMMDD (for scanning dates) The 10th character is either "C" for continuation (2nd line of data) or a number (1-7) for a day of week ÿ(1 ÿÿbeing ÿSunday ÿthrough 7-Saturday) ÿThe ÿ11th-79th ÿis ÿthe information for that date. HOW MUCH IS DAY 9.10? As in ÿthe ÿpast DAY 9.10 ÿis ÿoffered ÿABSOLUTELY ÿFREE ÿ(no-guilt). NEWDAYPC and TODAY are not my products and there is a shareware fee to use ÿeither, ÿthis is left to the users discretion. ÿHowever, ÿif you really ÿhave ÿto ÿregister ÿDAY 9.10 you can send $18.18 ÿÿor ÿ1› ÿor whatever ÿto the above address ÿor ÿto any charity. ÿIt's not that ÿI don't ÿneed the money, ÿand I am certainly a capitalist but this is ÿa hobby. WHAT ARE THE LATEST VERSIONS OF NEWDAYPC/TODAY? The last version of NEWDAYPC is 4.50c (Feb 3, ÿ1989). I ÿspoke to the author Mike Ratledge on July 23, ÿ1994 and he confirmed that to be the last version. He is planning to re-write a new NEWDAYPC in C. His BBS is ÿpermanently ÿdown ÿand there is no date as to when ÿthis ÿNewdaypc version will be real. As to TODAY the original DOS shell, ÿthe latest version is 3.7 on June 24, 1994. ARE THERE ANY FREE USAGE LIMITATIONS? Yes, ÿDAY 9.10 is the property of Bruce T. ÿGoldman. ÿIt can not ÿbe used for any gains without written permission from Bruce T. ÿÿGoldman. Also ÿwhen ÿused ÿa credit line for Bruce T. ÿGoldman must ÿbe ÿgiven. (Gee, I like typing my name). HOW CAN I GET UPDATES? Or better yet when is this thing updated? Being that this is a hobby, I ÿdo ÿnot pressure myself to get this out on a deadline. ÿAs can ÿbe seen by the history below. ÿAlthough I am ÿconstantly ÿworking on this project, ÿÿthe ÿofficially released updates are about ÿa ÿyear ÿapart. Updates will be posted on many NYC BBSes and some good outer of NY BBS sites. ÿIf you wish to get the updates by mail, ÿyou must send me (3) 1.44 3«" DOS formatted disks and a SASE. I will hold on to them until I ÿam ÿready to release my next update. ÿThat can be a wait ÿof ÿmany months, but you will get it. HOW CAN I HELP? Send me more dates, corrections, etc. Spread the software and ENJOY! Adopt a day or a month and error check it. THE HISTORY OF DAY May-1-1996 Version 9.10 Thanks ÿto more access on Internet, ÿIÿwas able to add a ÿlot ÿof ÿnew entries. Updated the Dutch data to 5265, although I have data through 7314. ÿThere are well over 25,000 ÿchanges from version 9.09a. ÿÿThe database contains over 120,000 items and is more then 7.6 megs! Aug-8-1994 Version 9.09a Basically this was a clean up project. ÿI ÿcorrected many typos. ÿÿI eliminated ÿa ÿnumber ÿof ÿduplicates ÿand ÿcorrected ÿsome ÿerrounous information. ÿDespite the files being slightly smaller I added ÿabout 100 new lines and of course updated until today. There are over 2,000 changes from 9.09. July-24-1994 Version 9.09 First some statistics. The update took about a year. ÿThere are over 29,000 changes (additions, modifications and deletions). The database has swelled to nearly 105,000 items and over 6.5 megs. . Obvious update of Aug, 1993 - present . Added a couple of hundred country music stars. . Worked around a flaw in the program by rewriting "Y" headers . Updated through DATA4124 by John de Brouwer Koning (July, 1994) . Added and corrected 100s of Playboy Playmates . Birth & Death dates for about 6,000 composers . Wrestlers (including championships) . Celebrity birthdates/obituaries by Mark Harding on Internet . Zen calendar on WAIS . Added credits to most actress/actors/directors . Started spelling corrections (using a spell checker on events) . Bundled latest known versions of Today and Newdaypc Aug-21-1993 Version 9.08 Released onÿ Aug 21, 1993, it adds orÿ corrects over 15,600 items. The data ÿhas ÿincreased to over 5 megs. ÿAgain special ÿthanks ÿto ÿour correspondent in Amsterdam, ÿJohn Brouwer de Koning. Also thanks to a ÿprogram ÿcalled ÿBABYLON ÿ3.0, ÿwhich does a ÿpretty ÿgood ÿjob ÿof translating Dutch to English. ÿThere are now more than 78,000 ÿitems in the database. See you in 9.09! Nov-05-1992 Version 9.07b Well, I ÿdid a check and noticed I screwed up TODAY.APR the same way I screwed up TODAY.MAY (see Next paragraph). ÿSo I needed to update DAY907-2.ZIP to DAY907a2.ZIP. ÿSo besides getting a fixed and updated TODAY.APR you also get as a bonus updated TODAY.MAR. ÿHopefully these are all the fixes till the next major release. Oct-31-1992 Version 9.07a Version 9.07a updates only DAY907-3.ZIP to DAY907a3.ZIP. ÿIt seems that I sent out TODAY.MAY with all the edit marks left in. ÿAs long as I had to clean it, ÿmight as well add whatever new data came in. . . . and since the ZIP is bundled with TODAY.JUN, it too was updated Major additions are from CIVWAR.ZIP by Philip Scruggs & from ÿmy niece Alyse Cutler. ÿThese will be more apparent when DAY 9.08 appears in mid 1993 (or whenever) Although this version has come out 6 months after the last one, ÿas of now I .envision a .while for .the next one. ÿ.I will .continue .to compile .data .and ask for your .help in .providing it, ÿat the .above address and phone number. CAUTION: If .using TODAY.EXE .the files will .need to be edited, .as certain sequences are only available in NEWDAYPC.EXE. I have bundled this with both TODAY35.ZIP and NEWDAY45.ZIP, the last known programs made available. I am aware of a bug in NEWDAY 4.5. The "Y" option doesn't perform as advertised (it's a bit buggy). The ÿdata contained here is in straight ascii. ÿIt is historical ÿand educational ÿand ÿalthough ÿthe ÿamount ÿof hours ÿI ÿhave ÿworked ÿat compiling this is uncountable, I ÿdo NOT ask/beg for any remuneration. Use and enjoy it! The data now takes about 4.4 meg! To display the data, you will either need "TODAY" a program by Patrick Kincaid, ÿor my preference "NEWDAYPC" by Mike Ratledge. They are both available ÿvia ÿshareware. ÿI ÿhave even seen ÿsome ÿlesser ÿproducts available. ÿIf you don't have these programs, you can still enjoy it, through a word processor. Oct-25-1992 Version 9.07 Version 9.07 is released onÿ Oct 25, 1992, it adds orÿ corrects over 18,000 items. Majorÿ importÿ comes from John T S Brouwer de Koning who keeps a Dutch version. He also sent me a list of sci-fi authors which is implemented in this version. I have begun to incorporate 3 new features. Highest and lowest temperatures in NYC (NY Daily News), Day into the year and days left (based on standard years, it will be okay from Jan 1, 1993 - Dec 31, 1995). The other new feature is the numerology #. This is based by adding the numbers in the date to get a single digit (ie 0928 Sept 28 equals 9/28 which is 9+2+8=19; 19 becomes 1+9 = 10; 10 becomes 1+0=1). Also included in this go round are dates that TV stations begin transmitting. Missing this time is my collaborator Robert Braunwart, who, last I heard, moved from Washington to Mexico. I think he is no longer interested in this project. Believe it or not I still have a ton of his stuff (that should have been included in 9.04) still to include. Talk of growing by leaps and bounds, the data is now past 67,000 items (about 200 a day). April-17-1992 Version 9.06 Adds ÿorÿ corrects ÿover 2,500 ÿitems. ÿMajor import came ÿfrom ÿMike Ratledge's ÿdisaster ÿdata and Jerry Lee's black history ÿdata. ÿÿThe space ÿprogram ÿhas ÿbeen update ÿto reflect all ÿUS ÿmanned ÿmissions including ÿbirth dates ÿof the new 1992 crop of astronauts. ÿThe data has ÿgone ÿbeyond ÿ50,000. ÿThere ÿis ÿDAY906-U.ZIP, ÿÿwhich ÿcontains everything (except word processor) ÿto up date, ÿfrom 9.05 ÿwith ÿjust some editing from yourself. March-20-1992 Version 9.05 Adds or corrects ÿover 11,000 items. I still have ÿBraunwart's data to go through. Major additions came from ÿ"Complete ÿDirectory ÿto Prime Time TV Stars." There are nearly 50,000 items in the database. March-30-1991 Version 9.04 A ÿtragic ÿthing happened on my way to version 9.04. ÿIn December ÿof 1989, ÿÿI ÿÿstarted adding several thousands (tens of ÿthousands) ÿÿof changes ÿand ÿadditions. ÿÿMany ÿthanks ÿto ÿmy ÿcollaborator ÿÿRobert Braunwart. I ÿthen purchased a spiffy new 386 machine with a spacious 85 ÿmeg hard SCSI Segate drive. ÿAround April or so, I ÿhad completed editing and compiling all of version 9.04, save December. ÿI ÿwas more than 3/4 ÿdone with December, and then it happened. DOS said "NO SCSI DRIVE ÿFOUND." ÿAfter making attempt after attempt to revive the ÿ(of course not backed up data) ÿdrive, ÿall hope was lose. ÿI ÿdid get ÿa replacement drive, but it took the heart out of doing the compilation. Any way I got my dander back and viola, ÿadded some 9,000 ÿnew entries (or corrections) ÿand version 9.04 is ready. In an effort to get this out ÿsometime, ÿÿI ÿhave not gone through much ÿof ÿRobert ÿBraunwarts additional data. (Just Jan & Feb). I am sure since then he has added even more data. I will get to it, I promise! Nov-6-1989 Version 9.03 Adds or corrects over 7,500 ÿitems. Including almost every Pro Hockey Stanley Cup final game, ÿPro Football and ÿNBA ÿchampionship contests. Many astronaut birthdays have been added too. Most of the 7,500 ÿitems are additional information to previously existing items. May-25-1989 Version 9.02 Containing over ÿ1,100 changes. ÿThe data set now includes almost all major ÿleague baseball no-hitters since ÿ1900 ÿand the final games ÿof every baseball World Series. Feb-9-1989 Version 9.00 DAY 9.00 ÿwas released on Feb. ÿ19, ÿ1989, ÿand in less than 45 ÿdays, version 9.01 ÿ& ÿ9.01a were released. ÿWith almost 2500 ÿchanges (1900 additions, 200 deletions and 400 changes). A BIT OF HISTORY OF TODAY/NEWDAYPC In ÿJuly, ÿ1986, ÿPatrick Kincaid released for public usage ÿa program called Today. ÿÿIt's ÿbased on a mainframe program designed ÿby ÿMike Butler. ÿÿAlong ÿwith ÿthe master program he had data files ÿfor ÿeach month. Each monthly data file was approximately 15K in length. ÿAfter a few months I ÿhad added a lot of new data and released my ÿupdate of the Today monthly files. ÿEventually, ÿRobert Braunwart, ÿput out his updates and approached me ÿon ÿa ÿcalibration ÿof our work. ÿDespite, abbreviations ÿand ÿother ÿattempts at shortening the ÿdata, ÿÿthe ÿ12 monthly files of over 30,000 items has swelled to almost 2 megs. Mike Ratledge, ÿlike myself and many others have gotten much enjoyment out of this program, ÿbut found some short comings. ÿTODAY would ÿnot read a file over 50K and would only display ÿabout the first 50 ÿfinds for ÿa ÿdate. ÿÿHe also wanted it to run on a BBS (T-Comm). ÿÿSo ÿhe rewrote the program in turbo-pascal (TODAY.EXE was written in C). As ÿof this writing, ÿRatledge's latest version 4.5 ÿÿdecidedly ÿbeats Kincaid's latest version 2.3 for features. (now 3.6). Ratledge did update a beta version in 1989. Unfortunately both of his computers were hit by a hurricane and destroyed his source code. He lost interest and seemingly will not be releasing an updated version I ÿbelieve NEWDAY duplicates every feature of TODAY, ÿbut also ÿallows for randomness, more categories, ÿmore color, ÿremark statements, date scanning and date aging. In ÿthe data files you will find "(BG)," ÿon some occasions. ÿAlthough coincidentally those are my initials, they are actual those of William Baring-Gould. ÿLes Moskowitz who compiled Sherlock Holmes' dates used (BG) ÿto ÿindicate that those dates ÿwere ÿproposed ÿby ÿBaring-Gould. Baring-Gould ÿis ÿa ÿSherlock ÿHolmes' ÿauthority and ÿhis ÿdates ÿare reckoned as opposed to being in the actual text. MEET MY COLLABORATORS John T. S. Brouwer de Koning Bart de Ligtsraat 19 1097 JG Amsterdam Netherlands John ÿis quite prolific in adding data to be imported into ÿmy ÿfiles. The ÿonly ÿproblem is that it is in Dutch. ÿHe is very kind ÿto ÿhelp translate (even sent me a good Dutch-English dictionary). I ÿwas also able ÿto ÿget ÿa ÿshareware version of BABYLON ÿwhich ÿis ÿa ÿlanguage translator. ÿÿIt was written by a Dutch guy so the translation ÿtable was already loaded with 15,000 words (I upped it to about 25,000). Robert Braunwart 4132-11th NE #6 Seattle Washington 98105 Robert uses PC FILE III, to maintain his listings. Robert has included category columns so that specialty lists ÿcould be made. As to data correction, ÿit is sometimes difficult to verify a specific date ÿwhen two equally good sources have different information. ÿÿOne problem arises in the change of calendars from Julian to Gregorian and the International dateline does present a problem. ÿMidnight presents a ÿproblem ÿit ÿmay be a different day in California ÿthan ÿAmsterdam. (Fortunately in the future we should have no problem - Star date 8801, captain). ÿÿTried ÿto use the date at the location ÿwhere ÿthe ÿevent occurred, ÿÿif not sure used the Eastern time zone of the US (NYC) ÿÿI read ÿin ÿone particularly enjoyable source (don't recall ÿthe ÿtitle) that contained celebrities birthdays, that whenever a doubt arose they took ÿthe ÿearliest ÿdate. ÿÿIt ÿis rare that ÿa ÿperson ÿwould ÿmake themselves older. . . . and when in doubt blame it on typos.
