********************************* * * * W E B - N E T * * * ********************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [ 1 ] Overview of setting up Web-Net on your BBS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Below is a complete description of the conferences carried on Web-Net. WARNING: Your BBS software MUST allow you to construct appropriate systems to ensure that your BBS complies with the details listed here. For example, if a conference is listed as PRIVATE, you should be able to enable appropriate security features to make that conference private. If you cannot comply with all of the details listed herein, please contact the Network Master Node and explain your circumstances. All exceptions will be considered on a case-by- case basis. Mention your BBS software type in your correspondence. New conferences can (and WILL) be added as message traffic, or the readership, warrants it. Post a message in the Sysops / Net Admin conference if you wish to make a suggestion in this regards. We welcome new ideas and suggestions. One obvious thing about a network devoted to Web topics is that it is likely to change frequently as technologies emerge. Let's keep Web-Net DYNAMIC. In order to create your Web-Net network layout, use your BBS software to add each of the conferences below. Make sure that each conference complies with the Standard Conference Setup and Attributes below, and that each conference is designated as a QWK or FTSC-type networked conference. Be sure to check things like Tag/Origin lines, private-post flags and so on. Once you've added the conferences to your BBS, create a "dial-out" event for your BBS so you can contact your feed on a designated schedule. You should be able to make an unattended poll to your feed, upload any locally posted messages, download all new messages for your site and complete the call without error. After you can successfully complete this process, you are ready to begin participating in normal network traffic. Your feed should be able to provide you with appropriate login and startup information, if you haven't already obtained such directions. If you are running Synchronet BBS software, you will find step-by-step instructions for the entire setup process in the WN_SBBS.TXT file. In addition, if you are using Synchronet v2.20a or later, you can simply import the WN_CONFS.SUB file from SCFG to save time entering the sub-groups. For other BBS software, please consult your users manual for assistance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [ 2 ] Conference Setup Legend ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Remember that this is the STANDARD Conference Setup. Each individual Web-Net conference may add or subtract certain attributes below as indicated, or as appropriate for the conference. Standard Conference Setup: -------------------------- - NO private posts are allowed -- all messages are public. - Public 'To User' headers are allowed, but not required. - NO anonymous posts are allowed. - Real names are not required -- aliases can be used. - Tag/Origin lines are allowed. No more than ONE line, however. - NO ANSI, CTRL-A, Color or @-codes are to be used or allowed. This is because Web-Net message traffic will contain source code, and screen codes can confuse the proper interpretation of source code. - All QWK conference numbers are per your FEED's direction. The numbers in this document are for reference only, and do not reflect actual conference numbers of any node, including the Network Master Node. Attributes Legend: ------------------ REQUIRED = You MUST carry this conference. No exceptions. OPTIONAL = You may carry or omit this conference as you wish *ONLY* if you are a Leaf Node. All other node types must carry this. SYSOPS = Conference is restricted to Sysops only. PRIVATE = Conference is restricted to private posts only. PUBLIC = Conference is open to all audiences and users. REAL-NAMES = Conference requires use of real names; no aliases allowed. ANONYMOUS = Anonymouse postings are allowed. - "QWK Name" entries are provided for those systems that use QWK-named classifications. All other BBS systems may ignore this line. - "I-Code" entries are provided for those systems that use "internal codes" to distinguish QWK conference areas. All other BBS systems may ignore this line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3 ] Comprehensive Conference List ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conference#: 10001 Attributes : REQUIRED, SYSOPS, REAL-NAMES QWK Name : WN-ADMIN I-Code : WN-ADMIN Long Name : Sysops / Net Admin Short Name : Net Admin Description: For Sysops and network administrators.
