[Universal Hint System FAQ] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please read this FAQ before you send me a question. Due to the volume of mail that I receive, I am unable to give personalized responses to questions answered in the FAQ. If the FAQ does not answer your question, feel free to send me e-mail at jstrautman@aol.com, but please be as specific as possible. 1. Can I register my UHS reader by credit card? Yes, you can. This information is, of course, only for the DOS and Windows readers, since those are the only shareware readers out there currently. I am now accepting MasterCard and Visa registrations. Either send in the registration form that comes with your reader and give me your card number, expiration date, and cardholder signature, or if you feel like trusting the Net, you can send the registration via e-mail to my AOL account. 2. What is a UHS file and how do I read it? See the information on the main page for the UHS. This page contains detailed information on the UHS as well as links to the UHS readers that you need to view UHS files. 3. I need help with a game, but you don't have a hint file for it. Do you know where I can find hints? All of the hints that I can provide are listed on the UHS WWW page. If there isn't a UHS file for a game, odds are that I haven't played it, and I don't maintain archives of non-UHS hint files. The Games Domain is a good source for hints, however, and you should check there for help. You might also try posting your question to the appropriate usenet group if you can't find a hint file. 4. I need help with my web browser. I don't know how to download files from this page. Due to the variety of WWW browsers and setups, I cannot usually help with problems that people have connecting to the Internet. Try first to contact your Internet provider and ask them for support, since they are better suited to helping you than I am. 5. How do I read UHS files once I have downloaded them? All of the UHS-related files on the UHS WWW page (both hint files and programs) are compressed. The hint files and the programs for the PC are compressed with the PKZIP format. If you don't already have a copy of PKUNZIP, you should download a copy (here's the DOS version) and use it to decompress the UHS files. Once you have decompressed the appropriate files, the DOS and Windows UHS readers include instructions in their README files that will tell you how to read a UHS file. Take a look at these instructions. If you're using a UHS reader for a different platform, you'll have to contact the author directly (e-mail addresses should be in the program) for support. 6. Are there any other sites that carry the UHS? You might also want to try the ftp site ftp.gmd.de, which has a complete collection of UHS-related files. Look in the /if-archive/solutions/uhs/ directory for these files. Make sure that your FTP program is in binary mode if you use this site -- receiving UHS files in ASCII mode will corrupt them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Main Page | About the UHS | Readers | Hint Files | What's New | Compilers | FAQ Page last modified 6 March 1996
