The installation procedure for WhatPill for Windows is quite simple. The package includes a program, "SETUP.EXE", which automates the entire process. If Hard Disk Space is tight: (if you have 12.5MB free hard disk space or more, ignore the following paragraph) A full installation of WhatPill uses a little under 10MB of hard disk space. If you downloaded WhatPill from a BBS or online service, then you will temporarily need 2.5MB in addition (to hold the unzipped files of the archive). But since a little over half of WhatPill is taken up by the Write tutorials, you can get away with having only 5.3MB of free room (after unarchiving and deleting the downloaded archive file/s) by first installing JUST the tutorials, printing out all the tutorials, then uninstalling, then finally reinstalling, this time installing just WhatPill (WhatPill without the tutorials requires about 4.5MB). The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received WhatPill for Windows. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE (download from online service) If you downloaded WhatPill for Windows from an online service or BBS you will need to perform the following steps. o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) into a temporary directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this varies, depending on the form in which you received the package. In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means you've already done this! If not, you should be able to obtain directions for unarchiving your downloaded files from the same source from which you received the package. After you've performed this step, if space is tight on your hard disk (you need 10MB free before doing the next step if you want to install both WhatPill and the tutorials), you may want to delete the downloaded archive file(s) now (this gains about 2.5MB). If space is not tight, you should hang on to the downloaded archive files until installation proves out. o Execute the "SETUP.EXE" program which you have extracted. For example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted the WhatPill for Windows package is C:\XXX, you would type from Windows Program manager: File... Run... c:\xxx\setup o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program. The program will ask you for a destination directory, and will extract the WhatPill for Windows files to that directory. You can install over an existing version of WhatPill with no data loss, but it's recommended you delete the existing WhatPill program group from Window's Program Manager first, so it is freshly created. The only change to your system this installation routine makes is to put WhatPill on your hard disk and creat the program group. No system files are disturbed (autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, etc). o When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should delete the temporary directory from which you installed WhatPill for Windows (C:\XXX, in the above discussion), including all its contents. You may want to delete the original downloaded WhatPill archive files too. INSTALLING FROM INSTALLATION DISKETTES (as provided upon registration) To install from the regular installation diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps. o Place the first WhatPill for Windows distribution diskette in the appropriate diskette drive. o Execute the "SETUP.EXE" program on the distribution diskette. For example, from Windows Program Manager, select File, Run... a:setup o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
