DTP Browser Demo Version 1.01 Copyright © 1991 - SJHDesign ABOUT THE PROGRAM --------------------------------------- Files: DTPDEMO.EXE -DTP Browser working demo program DTP.TXT -this text file As a desktop publishing (DTP) professional, I wrote this program to meet a specific need. My hard disk is filled with images and blocks of text, and no matter how carefully I stored them in subdirectories, it was impossible to remember what each file contained. Often I found myself needing to browse these data files to find a specific image or text, and I had two choices: I could use my DTP programs to load and view multiple text and image files, but DTP programs are large, load slowly and are not well suited to this task. The other option was to load a text viewer\editor (like Notepad) and a Bitmap program and jump from program to program. While this is easier in Windows than in DOS, if I had a lot of files to browse, most of my time was spent loading files one at a time. The solution was a program that allowed loading of multiple text AND bitmap files concurrently. Once I found the text I needed, I often had to cut, paste and edit it, usually into a new window, so it would help if this program had the ability to edit multiple document files. Of course, many Windows programs can do that, but you would still need to use a bitmap viewer to browse images. There was no small, fast program that could do all this, so I wrote one- DTP Browser. Mind you, this is no Visual Basic stuff.. DTP Browser is compact and very fast. HOW TO USE IT -------------------------- The menu selections are self explanatory, and in this demo version, there are not a lot of them. The File menu has the commands you need to load and view ASCII and .BMP files and the Window menu has choices for arranging the windows and icons. Due to it's low memory overhead, you can have an almost unlimited number of files open simultaneously. WHAT THIS DEMO VERSION CAN'T DO ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This demo version of DTP Browser has the following limitations: 1) Can only read 2 or 16 color bitmaps. You can load and view a 256 color bitmap, but your beautiful photographic quality image will look a lot like a blacklight poster from the 60's. 2) No text editing capabilities- the demo version of DTP Browser can only open existing ASCII files for viewing. It cannot create new text files, nor edit or save existing ones. You can actually change your text files on the screen, but the changes will not be written to disk. 3) Does not accept filenames as command line parameters-you cannot load the program with a file name parameter in this demo version. WHAT THE REAL DTP BROWSER CAN DO ------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think the idea behind this program is a sound one, I have an offer for you. For $29.00, you can get the REAL DTP Browser, a multiple .BMP and text file viewer\editor with the following features not found in this demo version: 1) The ability to read 256 color Win3 bitmaps, limited only by the size of your screen and available memory. 2) The ability to create and save ASCII files. 3) Full text editing, cutting and pasting capabilities, as well as context sensitive word search and replace. 4) Cut\paste capabilities for bitmaps via the Win3 clipboard. 5) Takes filenames as command line parameters. If you would like to obtain the full featured version of DTP Browser with documentation, please send a check or money order for $29.00 to : Scott Hanrahan 326 E. 34th St. New York, NY 10016 (Please make checks payable to Scott Hanrahan) Telephone inquiries can be directed to SJHDesign at (212) 683-2264 Please specify 5.25" or 3.5" disk. WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS -------------------------------------------- SJHDesign is committed to developing Windows software FOR DTP professionals BY DTP professionals. While we are not yet ready to go head to head with Aldus, we like the concept of the DTP Browser and are currently working on the following enhancements for it: 1) More file formats -such as PCX, Aldus\Corel Metafile, and TIF will be incorporated into DTP Browser in 1992. We would also like to add a few of the more popular word processing formats. 2) Enhanced Graphics Handling-like the ability to resize images and convert between file formats. Registered users of DTP Browser will be entitled to low cost upgrades, so help us continue to develop the software Desktop Publishers need by registering DTP Browser.
