CDE 0.5 Installation and Release Notes ====================================== * What is CDE? The Chess Diagram Editor (CDE for short) is a utility for creating, inserting and editing standard chess diagrams in documents. The diagrams can be further edited as well as printed out on any printer that supports Windows. CDE is freeware. Use it or abuse it as much as you like. * What do I need to use CDE? + MS Windows 3.1 or later. Earlier versions of Windows do not contain the required OLE libraries. + A mouse. This version of CDE does not support keyboard navigation fully. + A word processor or other software that can handle embedded objects. Some programs can only handle linked objects -- CDE won't work with those. The following applications are known to work with CDE: * Write (Standard Windows utility) * Cardfile (Standard Windows utility) * Word for Windows 2.0 * Paradox for Windows 4.5 * Symantec Q&A Write 3.0 + A supported chess font. Without a chess font, you can't edit or print chess diagrams. The current release of CDE supports the following fonts: Adobe Cheq ISDiagram & ISDiagramLR Linares & Linares Diagram Linotype Game Pi Chess PROchess AmerDiag Tilburg See below for further information about vendors/sources for these fonts. The CDE distribution ==================== The CDE distribution contains: README.TXT this file CDE05x.EXE a self extracting archive (x indicates the micro-release number) The CDE05x archive further contains: CDE.EXE the main program CDE.INI a default initialization file HELP.WRI short help information Installing CDE ============== 1. Copy the CDE distribution to a suitable directory of you choice, and unpack the files by executing the self-extracting archive. It's called CDE05x.EXE or something similar. It will unpack the files mentioned above. You'll need less than 300K disk space to install and run CDE. 2. From Windows, run the CDE.EXE program once, by using the File/Run... command in the program manager, or by double-clicking on the program in the file manager. This installs the OLE server information in the registration database. A message box that says if the installation was successful or not is shown. Note: After installation CDE can only be run by selecting the Edit/Insert Object... menu from an OLE client, such as Write. Trying to run CDE by double-clicking on the file will only produce an error message. 3. That's it. Now use Write to read the the help.wri text file for some further information on using CDE. Uninstalling CDE ================ If you need to remove CDE from your system, just delete the contents of the CDE directory. This will leave harmless OLE information about CDE in the WIN.INI file, and in the registration database. If you wish to remove also this information, you'll need to: 1. Edit the WIN.INI file with your favourite editor. Find the [embedding] section in the WIN.INI file. It will contain a CDE line that looks something like this: [embedding] ... CDE=Chess Diagram,Chess Diagram,C:\CDE\CDE.EXE,picture Remove this line. 2. Start the REGEDIT.EXE program. You'll find it in the Windows directory. Select the Chess Diagram entry in the list of known file types, and delete it. If you start REGEDIT with the -v option, instead select the CDE key, and delete it and its subkeys.
