INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES: NO FILES WILL BE INSERTED INTO YOUR WINDOWS OR WINDOWS/SYSTEM DIRECTORIES WITHOUT YOUR KNOWBLEDGE OR PERMISSION. A LIST OF FILES USED AND DESCRIPTIONS IS GIVEN BELOW. THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS FILE WILL ALLOW A COMPLETE DEINSTALLATION IF THIS IS WANTED IN THE FUTURE. ************************************************************************* 2. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIRED This program is recommended for use with the following minimum hardware and software: Computer system: Processor 386 SX Memory 2MBytes memory Mouse Software: Disk Cache SmartDrive or similar. Windows 3.1 Windows 3.0 lacks some files. HelpFile is 3.1 format. Microsoft quotes the following hardware minima to run Windows: Enhanced Mode: 386SX or higher processor 640K Conventional Memory 1024K Extended Memory Standard Mode: 286 or higher processor 640K Conventional Memory 384K Extended Memory ************************************************************************** 3. INSTALLATION (MANUAL) A simple manual installation on to a fixed disk is possible by following the procedure below. (Operation from a floppy disk is possible, but this is too slow in operation to be practical.) 1. Create a directory of your choice 2. Copy the following files into this directory JMPSTART.EXE LAUNCH00.CFG CONFIG.INX JMPSTART.HLP 3. You may elect to copy VBRUN300.DLL and CMDIALOG.VBX into the same directory, or alternatively into the Windows\System. directory. You need not copy these two files if they currently exist on your system, and are on your PATH. It is preferable, if you do not already have VBRUN300.DLL and CMDIALOG.VBX, to put these into the windows\system directory to make them available to other applications now or in the future. Lots of programs put files unnecessarily into the windows directory, and it is a real pain getting rid of them at a later date. VBRUNX00.DLL however is an exception to the rule that.... NOTHING SHOULD BE PUT INTO THE WINDOWS DIRECTORY UNLESS IT IS COMMON TO SEVERAL APPLICATIONS ! Note that VBRUN200 and VBRUN100 are (unfortunately) not compatible with programs generated by Version 3 of Visual Basic, which uses VBRUN300. Source programs may be recompiled to use VBRUN300.DLL, but older existing executables will expect VBRUN100 or VBRUN200 and will not look for VBRUN300.DLL. ************************************************************************* 4. INSTALLATION (AUTOMATIC - Optional) An Installation program is included which will install the files onto your fixed disk. You may select the directory to install to, and determine whether to include Visual Basic files in your windows directory or to hold them locally in the "JumpStart" directory. If VBRUN300.DLL is not present on the install disk, or in your path, then the installation program cannot run and you will need to install manually. Additionally you must have/acquire VBRUN300.DLL, and CMDIALOG.VBX if these are not present on your system, in order to run JumpStart. No Program Manager Group will be generated, as this is basically only one executable file ! No changes are made to any ".ini" files. With the Program Manager running, use File..New..Program Item..Browse.. to add JumpStart.exe to an existing program group, if you must. ************************************************************************* 5. LIST OF FILES ON THE INSTALLATION DISK. The files installed are as listed below: Essential Files: JMPSTART.EXE The main executable program. CMDIALOG.VBX Visual Basic add on "eXtension" VBRUN300.DLL Visual Basic "Run-Time" extensions. LAUNCH00.CFG Initial configuration file CONFIG. THE USER-SUPPORTED CONCEPT User-supported Software User-supported software (also known as "shareware") is an experiment in distributing computer programs based on these beliefs: 1. That the value and utility of software is best assessed by the user on his/her own system. 2. That the creation of personal computer software can and should be supported by the computing community. 3. That copying of programs should be encouraged, rather than restricted *************************************************************************** 10. GETTING STARTED As well as a Windows Help File, this program has a feature included which guides the new user through the initial steps. This is called "Beginner Help", and is to be found under the menu item titled "Xtras". When first run, the program should start up with "Beginner Help" active. The program may be started from within Windows, or from the DOS command line. Windows will be started by JumpStart, if not already running. The following are suitable command line (or batch file) statements: C:\JUMP\JMPSTART Using whatever drive and directory you have choosen. or WIN JMPSTART, OR JMPSTART From within the JumpStart directory, or anywhere, if you elect to include the the choosen directory to your PATH statement. (Autoexec.bat file).
