Snail Manager ver 1.00 Copyright 1995 by Bill Hander All Rights Reserved Introduction ------------ Snail Manager is a compact and efficient desktop shell that can either replace or supplement the standard Windows shell, Program Manager. With Snail Manager, up to 76 of your favorite programs are just two mouse clicks away, but it only occupies a small fraction of screen space. You will gain easy access to programs, an uncluttered work space, and programs will no longer become hidden and forgotten behind an oversized shell. Snail Manager uses standard text buttons to represent programs, instead of icons. This saves a great deal of space, while eliminating the need to double-click. All common operations, such as moving, copying, editing, and deleting buttons, are performed by dragging or clicking with the right mouse button. In addition, the standard title bar is replaced by a more useful Status Bar, which displays the time, the date, and the system's free memory and resources. The Status Bar can optionally be hidden to further conserve screen space. Snail Manager Registration -------------------------- This program is not free! It is being distributed as Shareware, so that you can evaluate it before buying. In addition, you are free to distribute Snail Manager, provided that all included files are passed on in their original forms. However, if you decide to use it past the 30 day trial period, you must register your copy. To register your copy, refer to the file 'REGISTER.WRI'. When you register, you will be given a username and password, which will allow you to disable the Shareware reminder screens. This username and password will work for all future versions of Snail Manager compiled for Windows 3.1. Feedback -------- I encourage all users of Snail Manager to report bugs and give any comments, suggestions, or compliments. It is currently in use on several machines and appears to be well-behaved, but since this is the first release, I am sure it is not perfect. In one case, the text on the buttons appeared jumbled when Windows first started. However, updating the video driver fixed the problem. I intend to continue refining it as problems come up, and improved versions will be posted. Feedback can be sent to any of the following addresses: Bill Hander 26 Knollwood Dr. New Providence, NJ 07974 OR wbh1@cornell.edu OR 75210.741@compuserve.com Installation ------------ Snail Manager files must all be located in the same directory. Any directory will do, but it is probably best to create a new directory for them. This way, all new group files will automatically be placed together and kept separate from other files. In order to use Snail Manager as your only Windows shell, a change must be made to the 'SYSTEM.INI' file, located in the main Windows directory. Under the [boot] heading, change the shell=... line to read: shell=[full path]\snailmgr.exe After making this change, Snail Manager will automatically be started instead of Program Manager every time Windows is loaded.
