March 1, 1995 This is the README.TXT file for the 32-bit version of Icon Studio version 1.0. This software requires Windows NT 3.5 or higher Windows NT platform. A 16-bit version of Icon Studio is available for use with Windows 3.1 or higher 16-bit Windows platform. Please contact Impact Software for more information. OVERVIEW -------- Icon Studio can be used as a standalone application to edit icon resource (*.ICO) files. It can also integrate seamlessly with Icon Manager, a full- featured utility for managing icons in many file formats including ICO, DLL, EXE, and ICL files. (special offer available in REGISTER.TXT) Icon Studio offers many tools to simplify icon editing in a work environment designed specifically for small graphic images. A status panel provides an actual size view of the drawing area and the current cursor position. Extensive Undo and Redo capabilities encourage creativity and experi- mentation while designing. Editing of 32 x 32 pixel, 16 color icon images is supported with Icon Studio, however it will not disturb other image formats when editing a file. If you are interested in owning the most complete icon management package available, please consider our Icon Manager application. Icon Manager reads and writes all file formats that contain icons, including ICO, EXE, DLL, ICL and ICA. Icon Studio integrates seamlessly as an image editor beginning in version 3.6 of Icon Manager (available on the CompuServe WINFUN forum, on America Online, and on our own support BBS.) Register Icon Studio, and we'll register you for Icon Manager for only $10 more (that's less than HALF of the normal cost). REGISTRATION ------------ Icon Studio is not free software. It is released as shareware, which provides the opportunity for the program to be evaluated before it is purchased. We hope that after you try Icon Studio you will like it so much that you will want to register. By doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for us to continue developing high-quality, Windows shareware. Complete information on how to register Icon Studio is included in the REGISTER.TXT file. DOCUMENTATION ------------- The file MANUAL.WRI contains a detailed overview of the features of Icon Studio and how they are used. Icon Studio also includes on-line help covering all aspects of program operation, accessible directly from the main menu. INSTALLING ICON Studio ----------------------- The Icon Studio package includes a graphical Windows installation program. The name of the utility for installing to 32-bit Windows platforms such as Windows NT 3.5 SETUP32.EXE. You should place all of the files included in the package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard drive. Run SETUP32 by selecting the 'Run...' command from the File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter "d:\SETUP32" as the Command Line, where "d" is the drive/directory that you are installing Icon Studio FROM (i.e. A:\SETUP32). 1. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window. Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO drives and paths for your install. SETUP initially sets these values for you so that you can just click the Install button if you do not need to make changes. 2. If you would like to specify a different path for SETUP to install Icon Studio to, select "Install To". A dialog will be displayed to allow a new location to be selected. If you plan to use Icon Manager and Icon Studio, you you should install both programs to the same location on your computer. (see below, "Icon Manager") 3. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell, SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected to receive the startup icon for Icon Studio. Select the "Program Group" button to select the group that will receive the startup icon. 4. Select 'OK'. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete. ICON MANAGER ------------ Impact Software offers a quality utility for all aspects of icon management, Icon Manager. Icon Manager and Icon Studio integrate seamlessly when used together. Icon Manager allows you to open different file formats that contain embedded icons, such as ICO, EXE, DLL, and more. The icons contained in a file are presented to you in sizeable windows, just like the Program Groups are displayed by Program Manager. Easily drag and drop single or multiple icons from one file to another. Organize your own icon file libraries. Icon Manager will directly replace any icon in your Program Manager groups with any icon you view from Icon Manager. It performs all of the work using DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). That means that the icon information is changed just as accurately and as easily as the setup utilities that install your applications. Icon Manager and Icon Studio are distributed for evaluation in separate file packages to provide the smallest size modules for users who download software for evaluation. When both Icon Manager and Icon Studio are installed on the same computer, they should be placed in the same directory on your hard drive. Icon Manager will use Icon Studio for editing requests if it finds the program in the same directory that it is executed from. If you would like Icon Manager to use Windows Paintbrush instead of Icon Studio, remove or rename the Icon Studio program (ICSTUD16.EXE or ICSTUDIO.EXE) if it is located in Icon Manager's directory. -------------------------------------------------------- The legalese section...
