SCRAM 1.0 Total Disk Security Imagination Enterprises Freely Distributable Introduction SCRAM 1.0 is a memory resident program that provides security to any floppy disk drive. Once SCRAM is loaded, all data (except for root directory file names) is automatically scrambled before being written the selected floppy disk. As long as SCRAM remains in memory, the data is automatically unscrambled whenever a program loads it back in. Without SCRAM in memory, and without the user chosen encryption key, files cannot be used on the encrypted disk. Since SCRAM runs in the background, you will not have to get out a special program over and over again to encrypt and decrypt your information. Anyone trying to read you data without your secret key will just get a scrambled mess! SCRAM has a special feature. If someone tries to copy your data to his own disk without SCRAM being installed, he will still get garbled data even if he finds out your key. The exact location of the data on your disk must be duplicated, since this location automatically becomes part of the encryption key. Using SCRAM To use SCRAM, insert a floppy disk into a disk drive and type: SCRAM You will be asked for the letter that identifies the floppy drive you wish to protect. You can answer A, B, C or D. Remeber that SCRAM only works with floppy drives. Do not try to install it for hard disks! You will next be asked to type your secret encryption key, which must be any eight characters. Carefully choose your key. If your forget it, you will not be able to recover encrypted data. Also remember that case matters. Upper case characters are different from lower case characters. The key will not appear on the screen, in case someone is looking over your shoulder. Instead, stars will be displayed for each character you type. If you goof, just uninstall SCRAM as described below, and then reinstall it again. After typing the key, SCRAM will be ready to use. Until SCRAM is uninstalled, all data written to the selected disk will be encrypted. Also, any data read from the disk will be decrypted. This includes any programs, so do not run any programs from the selected drive. Instead, use a hard disk or other non-encrypted drive to start your programs. I usually use drive B for my encrypted drive, and leave unprotected to run programs from. To copy a non encrypted file to the encrypted drive, just put the file to copy in any other drive, then use the regular DOS copy command to copy it to the protected drive. Files copied from the protected drive to a non-protected drive will be automatically decrypted. While SCRAM is installed, any program that put data on the protected drive will automatically have the data encrypted and decrypted as needed. WARNING!!! Do not try to run programs from the protected drive. SCRAM will assume that these programs are encrypted data, and un-encrypt them. This will have unpredictable results, and can even lock up your machine or result in lost data! Run programs only from non-protected drives. How to keep even your file names secret Want to keep even your file names secret? Her is how. First, load in SCRAM as described above. Now, create a subdirectory. For example, if you want to keep your files under the subdirectory named SECRET, you would type: MD \SECRET Now change to this subdirectory by typing: CD \SECRET Now any files you put on the protected disk will go in this subdirectory. Since subdirectories look like data to SCRAM, the file names will be encrypted as well! Security Remember that as long as SCRAM is in memory, anyone can read the data. To keep this from happening, either remove SCRAM as described below, or turn off your machine. The best security is to just take your data disks with you. Uninstalling SCRAM To uninstall SCRAM, just run SCRAM again from any non-protected drive. Just follow the instructions above for installing SCRAM. A message will be printed reminding you that your drives are no longer secure. User Support If you find SCRAM useful, send all of your money to the following address.
