Technical Advisory Note 004 28 July 1989 One megabyte 386 sytems One of the unique features of Vmos/3 is that it will effectively multitask on 1 megabyte systems. Use of the 386 demand and virtual paging features makes this possible. However, Vmos/3 does need 1 megabyte. Some systems, including motherboards based on the Chips and Technologies chipset, do not release the RAM assigned to shadowing the system BIOS and video ROMs, EVEN WHEN SHADOWING IS DISABLED. This results in system memory no better than 896 kilobytes, slightly less than we must have for minimum function. We believe that with some additional work on our part we can accomodate the 896k systems, but have not set a date for completion of this project. The short term solution is to add additional RAM to your system. As a fortunate side effect, this will result in improved performance over that possible on a 1 megabyte system. We suggest you contact your machine supplier. Contacting your system manufacturer direct may also be useful. You thought you purchased a 1 megabyte system and, in effect, it isn't. They may or may not be willing to make it financally easier to add more memory, but your comments are important and they may effect their future choices of motherboard manufacturers or architectures.
