TECHNICAL BULLETIN LANAI/Novell NE1000/2000 LANtastic AI 08.05.91 LANtastic AI with Novell NE1000/2000 Ethernet adapters The Novell NE1000/2000 Ethernet adapters have been tested in-house and are compatible with all other LANtastic Network Operating System software. This bulletin should replace all other notes generated from this office to date. The following information is based on in-house testing and customer support of LANtastic AI. If you are not a registered LANtastic owner, your questions should be directed to our technical sales staff at (602) 293-6363. Any questions or comments on this bulletin may be forwarded by FAX (602) 293-8065 or mailed to : Artisoft Inc., 575 East River Road, Tucson, AZ., 85704, ATTN: LANtastic AI Support. RUNNING LANTASTIC AI WITH A NOVELL NE1000 or NE2000 ADAPTER The NOVELL NE1000 (8-bit) and NE2000 (16-bit) adapters are both supported with the NEX000.EXE device driver that is available with LANTASTIC/AI 4.0. The first X indicates that both adapters are supported with the one program. After running the INSTALL program and selecting either the NE1000 or the NE2000 adapters, a program called NEX000.DOC will be in the LANTASTI subdirectory. PLEASE READ IT. The program defaults to 8-bit mode, and thus, to run it on an NE2000 adapter (or clone), you need to include the 16-BIT software switch. The switches for NEX000 can be placed on the command line in any order. It is very important that the adapter's hardware settings for IRQ and IOBASE match up with the NEX000 command line switches. A command to use a NE2000 adapter with an IOBASE of 2A0 and an IRQ of 2 would look like this (it does not need to be in caps): NEX000 IRQ=2 IOBASE=2A0 16-BIT AILANBIO REDIR machine_name LOGINS=8 This device driver will run on 100% faithful clones. What this means is that the clone adapter needs to emulate the NOVELL adapter right down to the register level. We will provide all the support for any clone, to the point of noticing incompatibility. One such example would be a clone that needs to use a section of high memory. Since the NE1000/2000 adapters do not use high memory, and our NEX000 program does faithfully support the NE1000/2000 adapters, it would not run on those clones. When a NOVELL network is being swapped out for a LANTASTIC network, the same IRQ and IOBASE that worked with NOVELL, in each specific computer, will also work with LANTASTIC. These are computer-specific settings, and, if there is no new hardware added into the computer at the time of the swap out, the same settings will work with LANTASTIC. Be sure to take note of the IRQ and IOBASE that were working before! Keep in mind that different manufacturer's programs could have different defaults than ours. Thus, if there was no explicit mention of the IRQ and IOBASE that was used previously, please be sure to find out what their defaults were. Since the NOVELL adapters only offer IRQs of 2-7, the NEX000 device driver will offer the same IRQs. This may be an unpleasant surprise to those of you who are used to the 16-bit IRQs (10 and 15) that we offer in other ARTISOFT products. Please refer to the SETTINGS document for information on what settings to change given a certain problem that may come up.
