The characters inside the [ ] brackets are what you should type. 1) Get to a DOS prompt and type [C:] and press ENTER. 2) Place Extend-A-Name diskette #1 in drive A:. 3) Type [A:INSTALL] and press ENTER. HINTS: a) For the destination subdirectory, type: [C:\XNAME]. b) To indicate which programs you will be using, use the up or down arrow keys to highlight the desired program and press [Y]. The number in parentheses following each program is the number of "triggers" (the mechanism which makes automatic pop-up work) that each program requires. You are limited to a total of 13 triggers. c) There are 6 memory versions of Extend-A-Name to choose from (A,B,C,D,E, or X). Use the left and right arrow keys to highlight each letter to determine how many filenames PER SUBDIRECTORY each one can handle and how much memory will be used. If you have EXPANDED MEMORY, choose version X. If you pick the wrong one, don't worry. You can use the UPGRADE program to re-install another version. d) If you will be using Extend-A-Name on a network, you need to indicate the lowest drive letter used when accessing the server. e) Your AUTOEXEC.BAT is automatically updated with the name of the PATH where you installed Extend-A-Name. Also, the command XNAME is added to the end which will load Extend-A-Name when you boot. 4) After installation is complete, remove the Extend-A-Name diskette from drive A and reboot your PC. When you get back to a DOS prompt, test that Extend-A-Name loaded properly by pressing [ALT]+[X]. If nothing happens, examine your AUTOEXEC.BAT to check that XNAME is executed before you get to a DOS prompt or menu program. 5) Application specific documentation (TIP Sheets) can be found on diskette #2. See below under APPLICATION SPECIFIC HINTS AND TIPS for more information. SETTING FILES IN EXTEND-A-NAME ------------------------------ When you pop-up Extend-A-Name for the first time in a subdirectory you will need to use the SETUP command to import your existing filenames into Extend-A-Name. The number of filenames you can import is limited by the version of Extend-A-Name you installed (i.e. version A can handle up to 100 filenames in a subdirectory, version B up to 150, and so on). If you have more filenames than the current version can handle, use the UPGRADE program on diskette #1 to install the next higher version. If you are already using the highest capacity version, you need our later products, Extend-A-Name Plus and Extend-A-File, which permit up to 900 and 1500 filenames, respectively. STEPS TO SETUP ALL FILENAMES IN A SUBDIRECTORY ---------------------------------------------- 1) Pop-up Extend-A-Name (Press [ALT]+[X]). 2) Choose the SETUP command by pressing [S]. (If you do not see the SETUP command, you are probably at the FILE command line. If so, press [Q] to quit back to the LIBRARY commands. 3) At prompt "Enter the extension of your data files (* for all):", enter [*] and press ENTER. After a moment you will see a list of the filenames in the subdirectory that Extend-A-Name does not yet recognize. 4) To add all the files, press [A]. After a moment you will be returned to the Library screen. To view the list of files, highlight the MASTER LIBRARY and select the "Access" command by pressing [A]. 5) You should now repeat this process in all subdirectories where you will be using Extend-A-Name. You can change to another subdirectory while in Extend-A-Name by using the Path command which is located in the LIBRARY command line. POPPING-UP EXTEND-A-NAME ------------------------ As long as Extend-A-Name is loaded into memory you can pop it up anytime by pressing [ALT]+[X]. You can change the hotkey (X) by using the UPGRADE program provided on diskette #1. Extend-A-Name can only retrieve a file when used in conjunction with your application. In other words, wait until your application is asking you for a filename before popping up Extend-A-Name if you want to "Load" a file. In a supported application, Extend-A-Name will pop- up automatically after you give the application the command to retrieve a file. ALL ABOUT LIBRARIES ------------------- Extend-A-Name provides a way of organizing files within a subdirectory in to sub-groups called "Libraries". A library is not a subdirectory, but rather a logical grouping within Extend-A-Name. Every subdirectory will have a "MASTER LIBRARY" which contains the master list of all recogninzed files in the subdirectory. Every file in the MASTER LIBRARY is also be listed in it's assigned sub-library. IMPORTANT NOTE: Even though a filename appears in both MASTER LIBRARY and one other library, there is still only one copy of each file! When you first setup a subdirectory, all files will be placed in the UNASSIGNED FILES library (and, of course, the MASTER LIBRARY). Using the FILE Assign command, you can move files from UNASSIGNED FILES to your own custom libraries. The UNASSIGNED FILES library is deleted automatically once it is emptied. After Extend-A-Name pops-up, you can look at the contents of a library by highlighting it and then selecting the LIBRARY Access command. When saving a file using Extend-A-Name, after you enter the file's DOS name you will be asked to assign it to a library. If you don't care, place your files in UNASSIGNED FILES. SAVING A FILE WITH EXTEND-A-NAME -------------------------------- When you are prompted by a program to enter the filename to be saved, you can pop-up Extend-A-Name by pressing the hotkey three times (e.g. [X][X][X]). The Extend-A-Name Save Window will appear at the top of the screen. The "Xname" is your 60 character description and you may enter whatever you like, including spaces. After you press Enter on the Xname, you will be prompted for a DOS filename. Normal DOS filename rules apply here. You can have Extend-A-Name give you a unique filename by pressing [F2]. APPLICATION SPECIFIC HINTS AND TIPS ----------------------------------- Diskette #2 contains additional documentation on using Extend-A-Name with a variety of programs. GET EVEN MORE WITH EXTEND-A-FILE (R) VERSION 4.00 ------------------------------------------------- For the ultimate in Document Management we offer Extend-A-File. This product competes directly with heavyweight commercial programs such as PC-DOCS, Reference-Point and SoftSolutions. They want as much as $400 per copy! We'll settle for $75 from registered Extend-A-Name customers or $50 from registered Extend-A-Name Plus customers. Extend-A-File Version 4.00 has everything in Extend-A-Name Plus, along with these new features: * Four File ID Codes on top of the extended name. These codes are customizable and can be used as "Client, Matter, Lawyer, Doc Type", or "Drawing #, Part #, Customer, Engineer", or "Keyword#1, Keyword#2, Keyword #3, Keyword #4", or whatever is relevant to you. With each category you can pre-enter a list of valid codes so you can subsequently select from the table. An easy to use configuration utility offers a wide variety of setup options. * Value Billing. In WordPerfect, Extend-A-File keeps track of the time and keystrokes accumulated for each document. Costs can be assigned per work hour, 100 keystrokes, and for per new file creation. Billing/statistical reports can be custom formatted and printed or sent to a disk file. * Indexed Text Search. This feature lets you search for a file by word(s) within the document. What makes this capability unique is the speed in which you get the results. You can search all your subdirectories in seconds! * Archiving with Compression. Using PKZIP compression technology (the best in the business), Extend-A-File offers an easy to use, efficient way to archive files to diskettes. You can even keep a catalog of your archived filenames on your hard drive so you can use the Find command to locate the diskette on which a file was archived. Of course, files can be restored as quickly and simply as they were archived! * Long Subdirectory Names. Extend-A-File lets you attach a long description (55 characters) to each subdirectory. * Version Control. You can selectively maintain up to 26 prior versions of each file. When resaving a file you have two options: resave under the same name or make a new version. If you have CompareRite, Extend-A-File lets you tag two versions and automatically roll-out, compare the files, and return. * Improved Network support and configuration utilities. Extend-A-File supports following applications: Lotus 1-2-3 Vers 2 and 3 AutoCAD 9, 10, and 11 DisplayWrite IV Enable Vers 2.15 and 3 FastCAD Ver 2 First Choice Vers 2 or 3 Harvard Graphics Ver 2 MS-Word Vers 4 thru 5.5 MS-Works Vers 1 or 2 Paradox Ver 3 PFS Write Ver 2 Q&A Vers 3 or 4 Quattro Pro Vers 2 or 3 IBM Signature Smartware Symphony WordPerfect 5.0 or 5.1 WordStar Vers 2000, 5 or 6 Call World Software for the latest support list.
