If you're not an experienced user, you should use the modem's manual for installation instructions or have your dealer install the modem. Intel currently makes the following three 2400 BPS modems: 2400B Classic Internal modem for IBM PC, PC XT, PC AT, COMPAQ 386 and 100% compatible computers. 2400B Modem 2 Internal modem for IBM PS/2 Models 50, 50Z, 60, 70 and 80, and 100% compatible computers. 2400EX External Modem for any computer with an external RS232 port connector. Refer to the installation sections that apply to the modem you're installing. SETTING SWITCHES 2400B CLASSIC MODEM Before installing the 2400B Classic Modem into the computer, set its switches for an address not used by any other serial ports or mouse in your computer. If you have just one serial port, COM2 should work fine. Fix any existing problems BEFORE installing an Intel modem. Once you know the computer is operating correctly, use the steps outlined in the appropriate section to install the Intel modem. 2400B MODEM 2 1. Turn off the power switch on the system unit and any attached equipment. 2. Remove the system unit's cover. 3. Insert the modem into an empty slot inside the computer. 4. Replace the system unit's cover. 5. Plug one end of the telephone cable provided with your modem into the connector labeled LINE and plug the other end into the wall jack. 6. To continue using the phone, connect it to the modem by plugging the free end of the telephone's cord into the connector labeled PHONE on the modem. 7. Turn on the computer and boot up using the Reference Disk. 8. Press Enter when the IBM logo appears. 9. Type N when asked "Automatically Configure System?". 10. If you haven't already done so, make a backup copy of your original Reference Diskette. 11. Select Copy an Option Diskette to copy the Intel 2400B Modem 2 Options diskette to your Reference Diskette. 12. Select Set Configuration from the Main Menu. 13. Select Change Configuration from the Set Configuration menu. 14. Select a serial port for the 2400B Modem 2 to use which does not conflict with other serial ports in your computer. SERIAL_2 usually works fine. An asterisk (*) appears when the current choice conflicts with an existing serial port. 15. Save the configuration information and exit from the program. Remove the Reference Diskette from drive A and put in a safe place. Obtain a cable which has a 25-pin connector on one end and a connector on the other end that mates with the serial port on your computer (usually either 9-pin, 25-pin, or DIN connector). This cable is not included with the 2400EX. 2. Turn off the power switch on the system unit and any attached equipment. 3. Connect the 25-pin end of the cable to the connector on the 2400EX modem's rear panel. Tighten the connector screws. 4. Connect the other end of the cable into your computer's serial port. Tighten the connector screws. 5. Connect the modem power supply cable to the round connector on the back of the 2400EX. 6. Plug the power supply into a wall outlet. 7. Plug one end of the telephone cable provided with your modem into the connector labeled LINE and plug the other end into the wall jack. 8. To continue using the phone, connect it to the modem by plugging the free end of the telephone's cord into the connector labeled PHONE on the modem. FINISHING TOUCHES VERIFYING MODEM OPERATION Follow these steps to run the TESTCOM program to verify the modem's operation: 1. Turn on the modem. 2. Insert the Intel modem diagnostics diskette into drive A and set the default drive to A. 3. Type TESTCOM and press Enter.
