"(Field report)" means that the information comes from a customer and may not have been verified by Intel's compatibility lab. TESTCOM.EXE TESTCOM.EXE is a menu-driven diagnostic program that tests your modem. With TESTCOM, you can do the following: þ Run Modem diagnostic test þ Check phone line connection þ Call the Intel Bulletin Board Service (BBS) You need both the TESTCOM.EXE and PHONE.BBS files on the disk from which you run TESTCOM. (PHONE.BBS is a data file with the BBS phone number.) If TESTCOM successfully connects with the Intel BBS, the modem hardware is working properly. Any problems encountered with other communication programs are probably from improper configuration or execution. NOTE: TESTCOM is not a substitute for communications software. You need a program such as Crosstalk, Procomm, or Smartcom for normal modem communications. TESTCOM & OS/2 TESTCOM won't run in either the OS/2 environment or the OS/2 compatibility box. Currently, no communications software runs in the OS/2 compatibility box. TESTCOM FAILS DIGITAL TEST (Field report) A Silencer power supply can cause TESTCOM to fail the digital test. The power supply provides the incorrect voltage. TESTCOM PASSES -- OTHER PROGRAMS FAIL If your modem passes all the tests in TESTCOM but your communications program fails, look for IRQ conflicts. TESTCOM doesn't use IRQs, but some communications programs, like Procomm, do. Check for other devices which use an IRQ such as serial ports, mouse boards, scanner boards, LAN boards, etc. Read the modem installation guide to ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ 1/91 Intel FaxBack # 4462 Page 1 ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º º º GENERAL MODEM TROUBLESHOOTING: PART 2 º º º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ (continued) ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ determine which IRQ your modem is using. Set the modem and other devices so they don't conflict. NOTE: COM 1 and COM 3 use IRQ4 and COM 2 and COM 4 use IRQ3 in classic bus systems. In microchannel systems, COM 1 uses IRQ4 and COM 2-7 use IRQ3. STUCK AFTER "EXECUTING AUTOMATIC LOGON..." CAUSE: This message may appear when using the "Call Intel BBS" feature. You can get stuck with the message on screen if any of the followin happens: þ a bad connection to the BBS þ the BBS was unexpectedly locked up and the modems were still answering þ the automatic logon has been temporarily changed. CURE: Try the call again later. TESTCOM'S HIDDEN MENU SELECTIONS TESTCOM's main menu contains two selections that aren't displayed and aren't mentioned in the TESTCOM documentation. These two selections can help you verify your modem's operation. The two hidden selections are as follows: (5) Lets you directly access the AT command set from the keyboard and control the modem at 1200 BPS. (6) Lets you directly access the AT command set from the keyboard and control the modem at 2400 BPS. Pressing the ESC key exits from these options.
