Thus DIGIDA.INI may be more convenient for use with many typical PostScript (R) devices or clone interpreters in familiar desktop environments. However, DIGIDA.PS is appropriate in settings which do not support the exitserver command, e.g. Display PostScript (R), or which prefer to supply an exitserver command themselves (possibly requiring a special password). Please see also README.1ST, p. 5; EXITSRVR.TXT on the exitserver command generally; and SERVBUR.TXT on service bureau situations. II. Digital Daguerreotypes .EPD artwork files (Encapsulated PostScript Daguerreotypes) 125 files These files are Encapsulated PostScript Format (commonly known as EPSF or EPS) files which require the Digital Daguerreotypes prologue to be present in PostScript virtual memory (VM) at the time they are imaged, but otherwise may be used in the same manner as other EPS files in plain ASCII format without a displayable bitmap image included. Note that these files include a showpage operator, so that they may be imaged on a "standalone basis" as long as DIGIDA.PS (or DIGIDA.INI for certain systems) is resident in PostScript VM; if they are imported into a composite document, typically a document created by some typesetting or page makeup application, then it becomes the responsibility of the document-generation environment to "disarm" the showpage. Please note that KALEID01.EPD, KALEID02.EPD, and KALEID03.EPD are identical except for the bounding box definition, which does not affect the imaging of these files on a "standalone" basis, but does make it possible to import this design as an EPS image including both star designs (KALEID01.EPD); only the design at the upper part of the page (KALEID02.EPD); or only the design at the lower part of the page (KALEID03.EPD). Digital Daguerreotypes .PSD artwork files (PostScript Daguerreotypes) 1 file The .PSD (PostScript Daguerreotype) extension identifies a Digital Daguerreotypes PostScript artwork file which for some reason may not conform to the standard Encapsulated PostScript Format (EPSF), or which, although conforming to EPSF, may be likely to generate anomalous results under some situations when incorporated into a composite document. A .PSD file, like an .EPD file, requires the Digital Daguerreotypes prologue to be resident in PostScript VM when it is imaged. If it includes a bounding box definition and other appropriate header information, and follows the Adobe Structuring Conventions relevant to the EPSF, it may be imported into a composite document under the EPSF -- albeit sometimes with curious results. RIDGETXT.PSD is classified as .PSD rather than .EPD because the routine placing text on a curve (modified from the pathtext routine by Adobe Systems, Inc. -- please see CREDITS.TXT and the "SPECIAL CREDITS" comment appearing near the beginning of the prologue) can yield different results depending on the scaling of this illlustration. Importing the illustration at a scaling close to that of the original may minimize this potential problem. PostScript Utility Files Specific to Digital Daguerreotypes 2 files These files, as the .EPD classification indicates, require the Digital Daguerreotypes prologue to be in PostScript virtual memory when they are processed. VMTST.EPD tests the amount of VM available after this prologue has been loaded into VM, and may also be imported into a composite document in order to take account of the VM used by the document itself. XFERTST.EPD is a demonstration of certain Digital Daguerreotypes PostScript transfer functions modifying grayscale mapping. (PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FILE MAY CAUSE A POSTSCRIPT ERROR ON SOME DEVICES, although it has imaged successfully with the Freedom of Press clone interpreter by Custom Applications, Inc.) Suggested Digital Daguerreotypes .EPD artwork template 1 file USEREPD.FRM is an ASCII text file which does not itself generate any PostScript image, but is intended as a template for use by people who wish to create their own .EPD (Encapsulated PostScript Daguerreotypes) artwork files. The suggested structure is intended to maximum "device independence," to minimize possible complications if an artwork is imported into a composite document under the EPSF. Miscellaneous PostScript Utilities 6 files These files are generic PostScript files which are not specific to Digital Daguerreotypes, but which may be of interest to users of this Analytical Design utility. EHANDLER.PS, by Adobe Systems, Inc., is an "error handler" utility which, if it is resident in PostScript VM and a PostScript error occurs, generates an output page with useful information on the error and with an image of any illustration or page element which was interpreted successfully before the error occurred. GRIDLTR.PS, GRIDLGL.PS, and GRIDTAB.PS are routines for generating respectfully letter-size (8.5"x11"), legal-size (8.5"x14"), and tabloid-size (11"x17") PostScript page coordinate grids -- in the latter two cases, reducing the grid, and optionally the accompanying illustration or document page to be gridded, to letter size. Note that these files do not include a showpage, and do not themselves produce output: rather the idea is to merge the grid file and the illustration or document page being gridded into a single PostScript file, which then images the combined grid and illustration or document page. SETTRANS.EPS is a file demonstrating certain PostScript transfer functions for the fine-tuning of grayscale mapping on various output devices. ARST102.PS, "The Kvetcher's PostScript Benchmark Test," is a playful test of the speed of a PostScript language interpreter. Text files documenting Digital Daguerreotypes 7 files in addition to FILES.TXT, this file README.1ST, as its name implies, is the file of choice for the prospective user of Digital Daguerreotypes to read first. It includes general information on this release of Digital Daguerreotypes 1.1, and some references to other text files. EXITSRVR.TXT takes up a point touched upon in README.1ST: some issues surrounding the use of the device-dependent exitserver command built into the DIGIDA.INI version of the Digital Daguerreotypes prologue. This file includes some general information on exitserver; some considerations in deciding whether to use DIGIDA.INI or DIGIDA.PS on a particular system; and a friendly invitation for users of the NeXT (R) computer and other Display PostScript (R) environments to share information about using Digital Daguerreotypes in these environments. SERVBUR.TXT addresses some important considerations for both users and owners or staff members of PostScript publishing service bureaus in handling Digital Daguerreotypes artwork files or documents importing these files. Among the possible solutions discussed for users and bureaus alike is the technique of combining DIGIDA.PS with a Digital Daguerreotypes artwork file, or with application PostScript output of a document importing such files, to create a self-sufficient PostScript file. NEW11.TXT offers some information on revisions, bug fixes, and new features in Digital Daguerreotypes version 1.1. PROTO3D.TXT documents the new prototype 3-D world coordinate system included in version 1.1, and discusses 3-D PostScript language design techniques such as Interior Surface Management (ISM) and character "glyphs"; included is a catalogue of version 1.1 artwork files illustrating the new 3-D system. CREDITS.TXT offers an inadequate survey of some of the people and sources which have played a part in the development of Digital Daguerreotypes; it might also serve as an excuse for a sort of proto-bibliography. LICENSE.TXT is your license to use and distribute Digital Daguerreotypes as a copyrighted "freeware" utility. The following "Technical Support" statement is left unchanged from version 1.0, and thus bears the original date of 8 April 1992.) **************************************** *************************** TECHNICAL SUPPORT *************************** ***************************************** While the term "prologue" may suggest the portion of a PostScript file setting up procedures and definitions, it brings to my mind the Prologue of Geoffrey Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES, which fittingly begins Whan that Aprill with his shoures sote In this same Prologue, at lines 287-310, Chaucer describes a "clerk" or scholar, concluding with this summation And gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly teche. Technical support should be a matter of mutual learning and teaching, as well as of sharing practical help. If you desire technical support for Digital Daguerreotypes, please contact: The PC Scriptorium c/o Ms. Margo Schulter 5901 Newman Ct. #6 Sacramento, CA 95819-2626 U.S.A.
