WORDPERFECT PRESENTATIONS 2.0 MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT! It's new, it's easy to use, and it brings to your computer a whole new world of power and capability. With WPCorp's new WordPerfect Presentations 2.0, you get the full range of advanced charting, drawing, painting, and presentation toolsþeven sound capabilitiesþto help you professionally communicate your ideas in just about any way you'd like. The DOS version of WordPerfect Presentations 2.0 (WP Presentations 2.0) entered our final testing phase on June17,1992. The DOS version is scheduled to ship at the end of the third quarter 1992, and the Windows version in the fourth quarter 1992. Our multi-platform license applies: buy WP Presentations 2.0 for DOS and you're licensed to use the Windows version, and vice-versa. What's In a Name? DrawPerfect, our presentation graphics program, was introduced over two years ago and was very successful. However, version 2.0 is such a giant step forward that we knew we had to change the name. Our new name, WordPerfect Presentations 2.0, better reflects the product's capabilities. After all, it's the most powerful presentation graphics package in its class! "Why Should I Want This Product?" It's simple: because you always have ideas and information that you have to communicateþthat you have to presentþto other people. Let's say you just found out that you have to give a presentation to a group of people, and you don't have much time (as always!) to prepare something interesting. Here's how WP Presentations 2.0 can help. Similar Graphical User Interface on Both Platforms The first thing you'll notice with WP Presentations 2.0 is that the interface is virtually identical for both DOS and Windows: both versions have our Button Barþ, push-button icons, rulers, dialog boxes, palettes for colors and patterns, and much more. You may access these with either your mouse or the keyboard (many of the keystrokes are identical with WordPerfect 5.1). Drawing Tools WP Presentations 2.0 comes with over 1,000 clip art images created by professional artists, so chances are you'll find among them the images you need for your presentationþif not, draw your own. We've included a powerful set of drawing tools to help you customize your presentation without your having attended a single art class. You can click and drag images with your mouse and scale the elements by dragging handles. And you're not limited to squares and circlesþcreate polygons, round rectangles, and bezier curves; make objects larger, smaller, or skewed; select multiple points and edit them, or select an image and rotate it around any point you choose; contour text (text to any path), blend colors and objects, create a transparent shadow, and even choose color gradients for objects and text. Color options won't be a problem since you can customize palettes of 256 colors from a range of more than 16 million colors. Paint Tools Unlike other presentation graphics programs, WP Presentations 2.0 also includes extensive paint tools. That's important because with paint tools you can create and edit bit mapped images. For example, you can import scanned and other bit mapped images (TIFF, PCX, and BMP) and edit them by using the bit map editing tools. You can also change bit mapped images to vector images automatically by using the Autotrace feature. Charting If you wanted to use a chart in your presentation, you'd soon discover WP Presentations 2.0 does all the hard work for you. It supports a wide variety of charts, including bar, surface, pie, hi-lo, tables, organizational, and bullet charts. Most of these charts can be created to look three dimensional. You control all design aspects, such as color, tick marks, legends, base size, and even the perspective from which the chart will be displayed. Enter data into the spreadsheet-like data entry screen or import spreadsheets or data from other programs. Presentations Now it's time to organize everything into an effective presentation. The Master Gallery provides you with over 100 master backgrounds that you can use throughout your presentation. Within each master is a series of templates that control the look and feel of the presentation. When you select a specific template, like bullet chart or organizational chart, the chart is automatically created with the master in the background. With the Outliner, type the information you want displayed just like you would type it on a sheet of paper. Or, you can simply import a WordPerfect outline. The Speaker Notes feature helps you create notes, with graphics, to use during your presentation. With the Handouts feature you can make handouts of your slides in miniature to help your audience follow along. You can use your Slide Sorter in WP Presentations 2.0 like a light table, where you can see a number of the slides at the same time and add or delete slides. You can even click on a slide and drag it when you want to rearrange the order (see figure 5). Sound is a new dimension you can add to your presentation because WP Presentations 2.0 comes with over 100 MIDI files of prerecorded music sound clips. Of course you need a sound card for your computer, but the program supports over 20 of the most popular sound cards. The program also supports Digital Audio (voice). You can record .WAV sound files and play both .WAV and .VOC files (that is, with a microphone and the right card, you can record your own voice or music). You are not limited to just one kind of presentation. With WP Presentations 2.0, you can make a great slide show for the computer, create transparencies and slides, or import your images and charts into your WordPerfect document. The program supports over 600 output devices, including black and white printers, color printers, and film recorders. Free Demo Disk A self-running demo disk of WP Presentations 2.0 (high density only) is available free of charge. DATAPERFECT: VERSION 2.3 Now In BetaA new release of DataPerfect is now in beta testing, and is scheduled to ship by the end of the year. Attention Novices: What's So Great About Databases? For those of you unfamiliar with DataPerfect and databases, may we give you this brief overview? What does the encyclopedia, a mailing list, your doctor's patient files, and your address book have in common? They all contain information sorted or indexed so you can retrieve it. A database is just thatþa collection of information. If you want to look up anything, you most often pursue the information alphabetically or numerically until you get the information you want. But a computerized database lets you do much more. You can identify any aspect of your database and ask DataPerfect to run a report for you. For example, a doctor could collect all records of patients allergic to penicillin or who have had surgery in the last five years. DataPerfect can search all files and pull out those matching the doctor's requirements and print out a reportþthe main database is not changed in anyway because of the search! There are thousands of different search and sort arrangements that go well beyond the "numerical" or "alphabetical" systems of searching and compiling. This makes DataPerfect a powerful analytical and research tool. Below are some of the new features included in our latest release of DataPerfect. These enhancements will mean a lot to our current DataPerfect users, but for those of you unfamiliar with the product, we recommend you contact your local software dealer for a demonstration. New Menu System The new menu system will allow a database definer to create a custom front-end menu for each database. This customized menu lets you make up to 99 separate selectionsþand each can be password protected. Unlimited sub-menus are also available. Quick Merge Define A new report option allows the DataPerfect user to easily create WordPerfect 5.0 or 5.1 secondary merge files with named fields. DPDiagnostics DPDiagnostics detects errors in your database. It will find, for example, cases where a report is based on a non-existent panel or where a report index does not exist. DPDiagnostics can detect over 50 kinds of errors and will give warnings of questionable constructs. It will print the error messages and warnings to a file that can be read on screen or printed. DPOrder DPOrder allows the user to reorder the reports and panels list for a particular database. This will allow you put your most frequently used reports and panels at the top of the list on screen. Several enhancements have also been made to the reporting area of DataPerfect including the ability for users of DataPerfect on a network to simultaneously create/edit/setup and run reports. Optional Transaction Log A new transaction log feature will allow the user to export all data in the database to a "transaction log" so it becomes easier to add or delete fields in an existing database. Phone Dialing DataPerfect 2.3 will add phone dialing capabilities. Users will be able to direct their modem to dial a phone number from a field simply by pressing the Shift-F4 key. WP 5.1 FOR THE X WINDOW/ CHARACTER-BASED SYSTEMS Now Shipping! We began shipping WordPerfect 5.1 (WP 5.1) for the X Window/character-based systems on July 17, 1992. It runs under Sun SPARCstations, and is scheduled for release this quarter on the RS/6000, SCO UNIX and XENIX, HP 9000 Series 700/800 and the 88Open. The X Window system version gives the user a graphical user interface (GUI) showing correct font sizes and attributes, graphics, headers/footers, equation symbols, and more on-screen. Also displayed on the screen is a ruler for careful margin and tab measurements, mouse sizing and cursor control, dialog boxes, and pull-down menus. You can also view a document or graphic before you open it, and preview your fonts before changing them. For those of you staying with your character-based systems, WP 5.1 offers all of the powerful features found in the 5.1 DOS version, as discussed below. New File Manager, Tables, and More Our new File Manager allows you to move, copy, delete, and rename files, and includes directory printing, file viewing, and the flexibility to execute sophisticated search functions. Also new with version 5.1 is our powerful Tables feature, an Equation Editor, spreadsheet links, a merge programming language, and context-sensitive help. Using Tables you can easily set up rows and columns of tabular data. Equations can be inserted in table cells to act as a simple spreadsheet, and the tables can be linked to spreadsheets. The Equation Editor allows you to create complex equations by choosing from the many symbols in an equation palette. WordPerfect 5.1 also lets you edit text inside graphics, define and save styles, and display multiple fonts on the same screen. We've enhanced the laser printer support so you can print graphically any symbol in the WordPerfect character sets, even if your printer does not support that symbol. In addition, the program creates footnotes and endnotes, columns, a table of authorities, tables of contents, automatic referencing, and includes a thesaurus with over 10,000 headwords and a 115,000-word speller. If you're a UNIX user and haven't experienced WordPerfect 5.1 for UNIX, see your dealer for a demonstration. According to Richard Raucci of SunWorld, the search for a full-featured, reliable, X-based word processor is finally over with the release of WordPerfect 5.1 for UNIX. As Raucci says, "Overall, it's a terrific product." We think you'll agree! BECOMING "SGML STANDARD" WITH WORDPERFECT MARKUP Billions and billions of words! How do you keep track of them all? What is in a document and how do you determine what information you need? What if your needs change tomorrow? Computers to the Rescue Computerized information storage has made accessing information in documents faster, but there are still limitations. Computers can search for words, but may not be able to determine whether the word is important or not. A word may be important in a chapter title but not in a section title. The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) was developed to provide computers an internationally recognized standard method of "marking" the "pieces" of a document. Once the document is in SGML format, other applications can search for a word and determine its importance based on what "piece" of the document it is in. Making the Breakthrough WordPerfect has joined the effort to simplify the complex task of fast and effective information access with a new product called WordPerfect MarkUp. What WordPerfect MarkUp (WP MarkUp) will do is aid you in inserting "markup codes" into your documents so that they are compatible with the SGML format. If WP MarkUp doesn't recognize the file format you are using (that is, non- WordPerfect documents), it will send the document to ConvertPerfect for conversion to WP 5.1. The file is then retrieved into WP MarkUp. WP MarkUp will then perform the translation to SGMLþand for substantially less cost than other SGML translation programs currently on the market. Human Errors.... During the pre-tagging process, some mistakes might occur. WP MarkUp will point these out with the Interactive Validator so you can correct them. Not only will WP MarkUp point out your errors, it will also tell you what should be next in the document. And should you need to return to WordPerfect to spell check, print, etc., the SGML codes are not lost or deleted. Powerful This brief overview can't possibly do the product justice. However, the great strength of WP MarkUp is the capability it gives WordPerfect users to continue creating documents using the world's most popular word processor, yet be compatible with the SGML format. WP MarkUp is currently in beta testing and will be available on Sun SPARCstations by the end of the year. The DOS version of this product is currently under development. (801) 228-9904 INTERIM RELEASES WORDPERFECT 5.1 FOR WINDOWS INTERIM RELEASE When we went to press in April with our last edition of WordPerfect Report, we had limited information on the upcoming interim release of WordPerfect for Windows. The interim release is now shipping, and we can give you a more complete picture of what's included. An interim release of WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows began shipping in May which includes enhancements such as Drag and Drop, Zoom Edit, Bullet and Envelope macros, and more help for creating and editing macros. The US disks are dated 4/30/92. In addition to bug fixes, we have included many enhancements as a direct result of users calling our customer support lines to request enhancements and report problems. Drag and Drop With the ability to "drag and drop" text, you just highlight the desired text, click anywhere in the selection, and drag it to a new location. The text selection moves with an insertion point so you can position it exactly where you want it. You can also hold down the Ctrl key to copy the selection and then click elsewhere in your document to paste it. Zoom Edit The Ruler contains a zoom button that lets you see and edit your page in magnifications from 50 to 400 percent. Zoom is also available under the View menu. A Page Width option will let you see the entire width of your page. Bullet Macro A Bullet macro will automatically add bullets to selected text. You can place this macro on any button bar or assign it to the Macro menu. You can change your default bullet character to any of the 1,500-plus characters in the WordPerfect character set, and you can choose up to five characters (e.g., "item:") as a bullet character. This default remains in effect until you change it again. On-line Macro Help On-line help for macros includes reference information about macro commands with explanations and examples. Users familiar with macros will not need the additional Macros Manual unless they want the tutorials. The on-line help also includes a tutorial. Macro Dialogs The updated macro language makes it possible to add dialog boxes to your macros. You can create dialog boxes with radio buttons, check boxes, various colors, pop-up buttons, frames, lists, and more. Envelope Macro The Envelope macro takes the address from a letter and places it on an envelope with options to include a return address, add bar codes, or append the envelope to the document. Your return address remains the same until you change it. This macro can also be placed on any button bar or assigned to the Macro menu. Macro Command Inserter Program The interim release includes the Macro Command Inserter Program, similar to the pop-up menu in the WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS Macro Editor that lists all the macro commands. This menu makes the commands more accessible when creating macros. Remappable Alphanumeric Keys As in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS, you can assign macros, text, and other characters to the alphanumeric keys on your keyboard. Table Math The Table Math feature now recognizes the Sum, Ave, Product, Subtract, and Quotient functions. For example, SUM(A1:D1) will add cells A1 through D1. This feature, though not part of WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS, is completely compatible with tables created in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. Improvements have also been made to the software to correct problems with the handling of Windows metafiles and display using high-resolution monitors. The interim release can be purchased for $15.US/ $18.CAN (plus shipping and sales tax) by calling the Orders Department at (800) 321-4566. Users who encounter a problem fixed with this interim release, and call Customer Support for help, will receive the interim release free of charge. THE SECRET PHONE PAGE In the summer issue of WPReport we briefly mentioned that we used Tables to create our phone page. This revelation created a lot of interest. Here are the complete instructions: First, create a table to fit the page (ALT-F7, 2, 1). Make sure there are enough cells in the table to accommodate your needs. For our telephone page, we used two cells. Second, to use columns inside a table, you must first create a text box in the cell. Place your cursor in the desired cell, and press ALT-F9, 3, 1, to create a text box. Inside the text box, you may turn on columns (ALT-F7, 1, 3), adjust margins, gutter width, fonts (CTRL-F8), etc. The amazing thing about Tables is that when you bring your text box into the cell, you don't lose the column features. Though you must go into the text box to edit, the desired appearance remains after you leave the edit mode. Another way to create our phone page (the solution many of you sent in) is to simply create a 4- or 5-celled table and turn off the lines (option 3), giving a "column" appearance. The problem with this approach is that any time you must move text around, the "columns" won't wrap as they do when actually in column mode. You must cut and paste to move things from "column" to "column." PHONE CALLS AND "RING BACKS" In our Customer Support phone system we have a five-minute "ring back." This means that after your operator has discussed with you your problem, and then put you on hold, if he or she hasn't returned in five minutes, your call will automatically ring through to the same operator's phone. Your operator will pick up the call and give you a status report on the resolution of your problem. When the call back begins, you will hear some clicks and a ringing sound, similar to when you dial any number. This confuses some callers and they hang up. Please stay on the lineþyour operator will return. POLITICALLY CORRECT SPELL CHECKING? From the May 3, 1992 edition of the Washington Post: "If you enter a list of would-be presidents in WordPerfect 5.1, a popular computer word-processing program, the spell checker offers some ironic suggested corrections to the spelling of candidates' names. Tsongas, whose campaign sputtered, comes up `zings.' Perot spits out 23 possibilities, among them, `pert,' `powered' and `pirate.' Bush, a president already, doesn't come up at all, since WordPerfect recognizes `Bush' as the correct spelling. Brown and Buchanan get the same treatment. Preferable, surely, to Clinton's fate: He comes up `Not Found,' with no alternatives." CORRECTION FOR AS/400 In the last edition of the WordPerfect Report we said "...WordPerfect for the AS/400 is packaged with each machine, thus computer buyers receive their AS/400 with all the necessary software installed and ready to run." To clarify any misunderstanding, WordPerfect for the AS/400 is not bundled with every AS/400 machineþit is an option to have pre-loaded on the machine if requested by the purchaser. MAIL BOX Amiga Users Want WP! Dear WordPerfect: As an Amiga owner and user of WordPerfect for Amiga, I was distressed to learn of your decision to stop producing Amiga related updatesþnot to mention new products. I hope you will reconsider your thinking. J.H., Maplewood, NJ At WordPerfect Corporation, each product we produce is set up as its own profit center so the revenues from the product must be able to support the resources dedicated to it. When we developed the Amiga version we hoped that it would do well and be able to support ongoing improvements. This has not been the case. Though it would be nice to have an upgrade to the Amiga product, the revenues received are not near enough to finance a full-fledged development effort. We will continue to offer toll-free customer support and hope that the product continues to be beneficial to Amiga users. "Any Spare Windows Packages Lying Around?" I was impressed, but not surprised with the generous offer of your spokesman in the attached ad [Ed. note: Our "Sticking With DOS" national ad campaign included a photo of a man saying he was sticking with DOS, and that "If you're all excited about Windows, fine. You can have my copy."]. I have use for his copy of Windows and hereby gratefully accept his offer. Please send my program to.... G.F.V., Chandler, Arizona Thanks for offering, but it was snatched up a couple of months ago by a very anxious fellow from the Redmond, Washington area. --Editor Tipping the Tables In "Tipping the Tables..." (WordPerfect Report, Summer 1992) you indicate that the phone box on page 19 was a two-celled table with column mode...etc. I don't think so! My analysis is that you joined cells and removed lines....Please, let us have the solution! M.F., Great Neck, New York I am guilty of being too brief in my effort to draw attention to some of our formatting techniques using Tables. See the article in this issue ( pg. 12) for more on how we do our phone page. --Editor Attention Schools and Educators Recently I saw a brief article about your publication called WordPerfect Report for Schools. How do I get this report? Thank you for all the assistance you have given in helping our school get our computers up and going with your software. J.S., Diller, Nebraska WordPerfect Report for Schools is available free to educators and staff at all levels of education, including medical facilities attached to educational institutions. To subscribe, please send your name and address on your school's letterhead to: WordPerfect Report for Schools (J170), WordPerfect Corporation, 1555 N. Technology Way, Orem, Utah 84057. --Editor Taking Stock in Recycled Paper Regarding your recycled paper, I, too, publish several newsletters (using WP, of course) and would like to know the manufacturer of the paper you are using. The quality is the best I have seen and I would love changing over to a recycled product. S.L., Epworth, GA We found many quality recycled-paper manufacturers in the course of our study, and many quality papers. For our first trial run with recycled paper, we chose American Eagle Matte, 60 lb. --Editor More "Down With Jargon Words!" I was happy to read about others' feelings regarding your jargon words. I have to admit "beta testing" and "GUI" and "user interface" really threw me. S.D., Marquette, Michigan I agree....That's why I never enjoyed getting any type of PC magazine....WordPerfect Report caught my interest though, enough for me to subscribe to the WordPerfect for Windows Magazine. V.V-B., Foster City, California There has been too much jargon....For example, I am aware that a spreadsheet has something to do with calculations and accounting. Other than that I am lost. What are they really? W.H.K., Honolulu, Hawaii Your comments are teaching us where we need to step more carefully around words we use. I hope the articles in WPReport are now easier to understand. As for spreadsheets, beta testing, GUI, and user interface, I don't have room to address these items here, but will try to explain them in the articles where they are used (see DR 2.0 article, for example). --Editor Spreading the Electronic Word I am writing for permission to offer WordPerfect Report for download from our on-line systemþNETWORK East.... H.J.H., Rockville, Maryland Please feel free to copy the electronic version of WPReport that we provide on our WordPerfect bulletin boardþand soon on CompuServeþto other BBS and on-line systems. All we ask is that you do not edit or alter the informationþtoo many rumors get started that way. --Editor Where is everybody? Recently, a friend showed me his copy of WordPerfect Report and I was quite surprised to learn that such a publication existed....I am an owner of WPCorp softwareþand yet, I have never received this, or any other publication from WPCorp. What would it take to make sure I am not overlooked in the future? K.M.S., Arcata, California Our database of registered users includes some 2,000,000 names and addresses. If you properly registered your software, and are not receiving our free literature and publications, please notify us in writing (as K.M.S. did) and we will correct the problem. --Editor WordPerfect Corporation Telephone Directory Unless otherwise noted, all hours of operation are: 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (MST), M-F For More Information Customer Support 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (MST), M-F After hours: (801) 222-9010 Fax: (801) 222-4377 or to reach WPCorp business offices, call Information Services: (800) 451-5151 (801) 225-5000 Educational: (801) 226-7654 French Speaking: (800) 321-2318 Spanish Speaking: (800) 451-5151 FAX: (801) 222-5077 Or write: WordPerfect Corporation 1555 N.
