Note to Printers: This Customer Information Sheet can save you a lot of headaches in attempting to explain why typesetting isn't included in the price of the printing job. These prices work for us, but check yours carefully before using them as your own. You can import this into your wordprocessor and customize it for your shop by calling for the filename PREPRES.TXT. Typesetting/Artwork Charges Estimating typesetting is, at best, difficult. When you are given an estimate on typesetting, it is an estimate based on our judgment as to how long the job will take to produce. Our typesetting is billed on an hourly basis with minimum charges for small jobs. The below figures can be used for estimating relatively simple jobs. Important: Jobs with medical or technical words, tabular material, run-arounds, footnotes, etc. cannot be estimated from this sheet. Special artwork is not included. On newsletters, booklets, etc. prices are based on clean typewritten copy being furnished with a production dummy, all photos tagged, etc. See Customer Information Sheet, "How To Save...". Typesetting estimates are subject to additional charges on this type of work if it takes longer to produce because copy was submitted handwritten, with no dummy, etc. The more information you give us, the less time it will take us to complete the job. On large jobs we attempt to "gang" as much work as possible to substantially reduce the price. i.e. a job with 100 halftones would be substantially less per halftone than a job with two or three halftones. All estimates are subject to change if the estimate is not made on the exact manuscript that will be presented for production. Typesetting charges include studying and interpreting manuscript, selecting and installing typeface(s), copyfitting job to customer's dummy, marking up dummy for sizes and styles, keyboarding job, proofreading for keyboard errors and correcting those errors, making photocopy proof for customer, correcting any keyboard errors, if any, missed by proofreader. Alterations (any changes not on originally submitted manuscript) made by customer at time of proof will be billed as an additional charge on an hourly basis. Hourly rates cannot be used as a criteria for comparing competitive pricing. The bottom line is the price you pay for the job - not the hourly rate. We are the most experienced typesetters in the area and have by far the largest type library. It would not be uncommon for your final cost to be far less using our $45 per hour charge than that of a less experienced typesetter's $15 per hour rate. In addition, our experience assures a lower probability of errors and a greater probability of the end product equalling or exceeding your expectations. Below formula can be used only on straight copy. If manuscript contains technical words, tabular material, runarounds, narrow columns (less than 14 picas), math figures, underlines, close copy fitting, symbols, accent marks, footnotes, etc., add difficulty factors for that portion of job. 1. Count letters and spaces in average length line. 2. Count lines on the longest page. 3. Count number of typewritten pages 4. Multiply the number of letters and spaces per line times the number of lines per page times the number of pages. 5. Multiply the number you get from (#)4 above by $.005 to get the approximate cost for typesetting. 6. Add difficult factors below for appropriate portions. Example: You have a manuscript of 35 typewritten pages of straight text. You look through the pages and determine the length of an average line and see that it has 72 letters and spaces. Next you count the lines on the longest page and see that it has 30 lines. You multiply 72 (the number of letters and spaces per page) times 30 (the average number of lines per page) and you get 2,160 (average number of keystrokes per page). You take that number and multiply it by the number of pages, or 35 and you get 75,600 keystrokes. Finally to determine the price, you multiply that number by $.0089 and you get an estimate of $672 to typeset, proof, and if necessary, pasteup the job and make it look pretty. To determine approximately how long it should take someone to keyboard the job, divide the number of keystrokes (75,600) by 5,000 to get a total of just over 15 hours. (Assuming the typographer can accurately net 5,000 keystrokes per hour including keyboarding, proofing and correcting keyboard errors. Difficulty Factors Tabular material..............................................400% Newspaper clippings...........................................100% Neatly handwritten copy........................................50% Handwritten copy with slanted copy or mark-throughs...........100% Scribbled handwritten copy/difficult to read...............200% up Technical words...........................................100-200% Other common difficulty factors that slow production and must be considered are: math figures, symbols, close copy fitting, special lines, captions, accent marks, borders, underlining, irregular columns, boxes, narrow columns less than 14 picas), run arounds, footnotes, wide columns (over 24 picas), special positioning of words, etc. Commercial Artists Note The most economical way to order type is to order galley type. If you have the capability of specifying your type size, style, line length, leading and kerning, you can save substantially on your type. We will provide your galley type proofed and waxed. As an example, properly specified galley type for an 8-page newsletter would probably run between $40 and $70 as opposed to $200 or more if we do all the work. Desktop Publishing Desktop publishing is simply a buzzword for typesetting on a PC or Mac computer. This process is far less expensive than traditional typesetting because it requires no pasteup and customer generated textfiles can be imported without having to rekeyboard any copy. We are working on a Customer Information Sheet on Desktop Publishing that will be available in the near future. The Printer, Lufkin, TX (409) 637-7468
