Hey out there! Were you one of the first to acquire the new MAXTOR 535 MB IDE drives recently released? If so, here's some news you might take to heart. After installing the drive, with the cylinder/head/sectors specs listed in the drive manual, I had some problems: 1) 32bit access no longer would work in Windows 3.1. The message said "Out of address space, kill some TSR's", etc...your basic bullshit error message which helps no one. 2) Some files on my disk disappeared. 3) My permanent swap file caused many Windows errors. Well, it turns out that the Maxtor manual had a "type", so they've said. I love the drive, but jesus, after all the R&D put into this piece of art, you'd think the Cylinder setting would be double checked...Anyway, The cylinder size should be 1024, not 1036. I changed this myself before talking to MAXTOR only because I noticed it was the only Maxtor drive listed which had a cylinder size different than its landing zone. Upon calling them, I was right...it should be 1024 because DOS is somewhat allergic to cylinder sizes above 1024. 32bit access in Win 3.1 coincidentally started to work again after this mod. Ideally, if you have it set at 1036 you should leave it alone, back up all your data, change it to 1024, delete any partitions and/or logical drives via FDISK, recreate any partitions/logical drives, and reformat the disk space...just to be safe. Then put your data back. Then the hard disk will give you trouble free, fast, reliable performance. Hope this helped, Loren Rose
