Recovering Your Database Your Q&A program includes several features designed to protect your data files from damage and contamination. In spite of these safeguards, occasionally a data file can be damaged by fluctuations in the power supply, static electricity, problems with the disk medium or other hardware problems. You can provide the best protection against these possible sources of trouble by using a regular plan for making sequential backups. For more information on how to do this, consult a standard DOS reference. The error message you have received indicates that although your database has been damaged in some way, Q&A may be able to rebuild it. To effect the repair do the following. From the Main Menu, choose File and then Backup and enter the name of the database which has given the error message. When prompted for a backup file name, enter a temporary name for your database. When the backup is made, return to Main Menu and select Utilities. From the Utilities Menu, select Recover database and enter the original name of the database. You will be warned about the need to make a backup before continuing, but you have already made a backup, so you can safely proceed. Q&A will keep you informed about the progress of the recovery as it recreates your database. If Q&A finishes rebuilding the file, you will be told that recovery was successful. You can then select DOS file facilities and make a new backup file and delete the temporary backup. Occasionally, Recover does not succeed. Instead, you will get a message stating that Recover has failed, or the progress indicator will remain at the same % for more than a couple of minutes. This will occur when Q&A discovers additional damage in your database while attempting to rebuild it. If this happens, please call Q&A Product Support for further help.
