Changing Upper to Lower Case Using the QACASE.EXE Program for 3.0 The purpose of this program is to change any text field to one of three options: all Upper case, Initial Caps, or all Lower case. The QACASE program works ONLY on a Standard ASCII file. This Technical Tip describes how to export your Q&A database to ASCII, run QACASE, and import the ASCII file back into a Q&A database. 1. Export the data as a standard ASCII file. A. Select Utilities from the Q&A MAIN MENU and then Export data from the UTILITIES MENU. B. At the EXPORT DATA MENU choose Standard ASCII and then type the name of your Q&A database, press . Next, type in the name of the Standard ASCII file to which you are exporting your data and press F10. (For example, you might use the name UPPER.ASC). C. At the Retrieve Spec and the Merge Spec press F10 and then again at the ASCII OPTIONS screen to accept the default settings of quotes around text and fields separated by commas. Q&A will now export the data. 2. Run QACASE.EXE. A. Copy QACASE.EXE to the same directory to which you have exported your Standard ASCII file. B. At the DOS prompt type QACASE and press . The following are the QACASE prompts: i) Standard ASCII input filename: _ You type in the name of the ASCII file to which you exported your data from Q&A (in 1B above) and press . ii) Field number to affect: _ Type in the number of a text field that you want to change. iii) Change to Upper Lower or Initial Caps? _ Type a U, L, or I for UPPER CASE, lower case, or Initial Caps. If you have more than 10 text fields to change run QACASE again. To start the conversion press F10 after you have selected the fields to be changed. You may press ESC at anytime to quit QACASE. 3. Import the standard ASCII file to a new Q&A database. A. Select File from the Q&A MAIN MENU and at the FILE MENU choose Copy and then enter the name of your original database and press . At the COPY MENU choose Copy Design Only if you have not been using the Intelligent Assistant or else Copy design with IA info if you have. Type in a new name for your Q&A database and then press to make a copy of your design to that new filename. B. When the design copy is finished press ESC twice to return the Q&A MAIN MENU and then select Utilities, then choose Import data. At the IMPORT DATA MENU select Standard ASCII and type in the name of the ASCII file (from 1B), and press . Next type in the name of the new (target) Q&A database (which you created from 3A above) and press . At the Merge Spec press F10 and then again at the ASCII OPTIONS screen to accept the default settings of quotes around text and fields separated by commas.
