NORTON DESKTOP for DOS - FAXBACK INFORMATION Subject: TEMP FILE RESTRICTIONS PROBLEM: Not enough disk space for a swap file! If Desktop reports that there is not enough disk space for a swap file, yet there is plenty of free disk space, you probably have a TEMP or TMP environment variable set to a drive that doesn't have enough FREE space. The Norton Desktop for DOS requires a minimum of 600K of free disk space to swap to. RECOMMENDATION: Set the TEMP or TMP variable to a larger disk drive, or if the variable is set to a RAM drive, then increase the size of the RAM drive to handle the minimum requirements of 600K FREE space. The TEMP and TMP variables are usually defined in AUTOEXEC.BAT with a line that reads: SET TEMP=C:\TEMP In this case, temporary files will go to C:\TEMP. To see how much disk space is available on the drive used for TEMP, type DIR C: (where C: is the drive letter given in the SET TEMP= statement). The last line printed out by the DIR command will say something like: xxxx bytes free The desktop requires 600000 bytes free as an absolute minimum. PROBLEM: Random crashes or lost sectors! If you are using either Stacker or SuperStor, then the TEMP or TMP variable MUST be set to an Un-Compressed drive or crashes and/or lost sectors may occur. RECOMMENDATION: Set the TEMP or TMP variable to an Un-Compressed drive. For example, if D: is an uncompressed drive with at least 600000 bytes free, then edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and add the statement: SET TEMP=D:\ If there is more than one SET TEMP= line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, only the last one will be used by the Norton Desktop. Norton Application Note Rev. 6/92 #4104 Page 1 of 2 On systems that are running Windows, set Windows to use a TEMPORARY SWAP FILE. This allows ND to use the same disk space for its swap file when Windows is not running. A Windows temporary swap file is set up be default in Windows 3.0 (unless you have created a permanent swap file by running the SWAPFILE.EXE program). In Windows 3.1, swap settings are accessed from the Windows Control Panel | 386 Enhanced | Virtual Memory dialog. Lost sectors are unique to Stacker and can be reclaimed by running Stacker's SCHECK program with the /F option. Norton Application Note Rev. 6/92 #4104 Page 2 of 2
