NORTON DESKTOP for DOS - FAXBACK INFORMATION Subject: SPEEDISK TIPS PROBLEM: Too many unmovable files! Speedisk shows many files as "unmovable". The files that MUST be "unmovable" are IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, IBMBIO.COM, IBMDOS.COM, IMAGE.IDX, and the Windows SwapFile 386SPART.PAR. In addition, copy protected files, non-standard EXE's, and lost clusters will be "unmovable". The files that have been detected as "unmovable" can be listed by choosing the "SHOW STATIC FILES" option from the Information menu. Also, someone may have added files to the "UNMOVABLE FILES" list in the configuration if several people have access to the same machine. Files that are listed as "static", but can be moved are NSCHED.SWP and the SPEEDISK Help file. RECOMMENDATION: First, run NDD to ensure that there are no lost clusters. NDD can be run from either the Tools menu or from the DOS prompt. Make sure NSCHED.EXE is NOT running before entering Speedisk to free up space taken by NSCHED swapper files. If you are in the Norton Desktop, exit by typing ALT+F, X. Next, type NSCHED /U. This will uninstall the scheduler and delete the swap file. Now run Speedisk by typing SPEEDISK. If Speedisk complains about not enough memory, see tips for memory usage below. Running Speedisk from the DOS prompt rather than the pull downs is recommended so that larger drives may be optimized. This also insures Speedisk can move all Desktop files. Unless you uninstalled NSCHED from the command line by following the steps above, the NSCHED.SWP will not be deleted. Use the Desktop to search for and delete NSCHED.SWP. Always make sure NSCHED.EXE was not loaded before deleting this file! If you use SuperFind to locate and delete NSCHED.SWP, the SuperFind window will still list the file even after you delete it because the window is really a list of files and not a true drive window. Check "UNMOVABLE FILES" and remove any programs from the list that you know to be acceptable. PROBLEM: Out of memory! Speedisk runs out of memory during operation. RECOMMENDATION: Norton Application Note Rev. 6/92 #4105 Page 1 of 2 Run Speedisk from the DOS prompt, not from within ND. Speedisk can only use conventional memory and UMB's. ND uses any available UMB's and takes up 5k or so of conventional memory. This reduces the amount of memory available for Speedisk to use. Boot up with a minimal system. Normally this minimal system will be your memory manager, DOS=HIGH,UMB (for DOS 5 systems) and FILES=30 statement in your CONFIG.SYS. Run Speedisk with the /NOHELP parameter so that Speedisk does not try to load the online help files. Norton Application Note Rev. 6/92 #4105 Page 2 of 2
