NORTON DESKTOP for DOS - FAXBACK INFORMATION Subject: ND USES TOO MUCH MEMORY PROBLEM: Unable to launch programs that require extended or expanded memory from the Desktop. This is because the Norton Desktop is using both expanded and extended memory when they are available to increase performance. RECOMMENDATION: Reduce the amount of memory used by the Desktop. Command line switches that affect ND's use of memory are: /NOEMS - Do not use expanded memory for program and data storage. ND will normally use up to 1 megabyte of expanded memory if it is available. /NOXMS - Do not use extended memory for program and data storage. ND will normally use up to 1 megabyte of extended memory if it is available. /S=D - Swap to disk instead of XMS or EMS memory. ND will use approximately 600k of expanded or extended memory to store itself while an external program is running. For example, to prevent ND from using expanded memory and to force ND to swap to disk, start ND with the command: ND /NOEMS /S=D You may also increase the amount of memory available to programs run from within the desktop by reducing the cache size of software disk caches such as the Norton Cache (NCACHE2) or SmartDrive. Refer to the User's Guide for your cache for specific instructions on setting the cache size. Norton Application Note Rev. 6/92 #4110 Page 1 of 1
