NORTON DESKTOP for DOS - FAXBACK INFORMATION Subject: Common Files - Norton Utilities / Norton Desktop for DOS NORTON UTILITIES FILES THAT SHOULD BE REPLACED BY THEIR NORTON DESKTOP FOR DOS COUNTERPARTS: The following files are common to both the Norton Utilities version 6.01 and Norton Desktop for DOS version 1.0. The files in the Norton Desktop for DOS should replace the Norton Utilities files. These files can be deleted from your Norton Utilities directory. Please insure that both your ND directory and your NU directory are on the path. This will allow the Norton program to continue to function correctly and find the updated files in your ND directory. Be sure to change any references in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to point to the new files in the ND directory. You may wish to delete these Norton Utilities files if you are low on disk space or do not use these files regularly. Note that if you choose to delete these files, you will no longer be able to access these functions from the Norton Utilities menu program (NORTON.EXE). Norton Application Note Rev. 6/92 #4111 Page 2 of 3 NORTON UTILITIES FILES WITH THE SAME FILENAME AS NORTON DESKTOP FOR DOS FILES, BUT WITH SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITY Some of the files included in the Norton Desktop for DOS have slightly different functionality than their counterparts in Norton Utilities. As a result, you may wish to keep both versions of these programs. FILENAME Description ND User's Guide ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DISKTOOL.EXE Disk Tool Chapter 28 The Norton Utilities version of DiskTool has an additional function, "Mark a Cluster." This function is not included in the Desktop version of DiskTool. We recommend against deleting DISKTOOL from your Norton Utilities directory. NDD.EXE Norton Disk Doctor Chapter 18 The Norton Utilities version of Disk Doctor requires slightly less memory, and as a result, can handle slightly larger directory structures. Users with large-capacity hard disks containing many dozens of directories and many thousands of files may be able to use the Norton Utilities version of Disk Doctor if they receive a "Not Enough Memory" message from the Desktop version. SPEEDISK.EXE Norton Speed Disk Chapter 17 The Norton Utilities version of Speedisk requires slightly less memory, and as a result, can handle slightly larger directory structures. Users with large-capacity hard disks containing many dozens of directories and many thousands of files may be able to use the Norton Utilities version of Speedisk if they receive a "Not Enough Memory" message from the Desktop version. UNERASE.EXE Norton Unerase Chapter 16 The Norton Utilities version of Unerase requires slightly less memory, and as a result, can handle slightly larger directory structures. Users with large-capacity hard disks containing many dozens of directories and many thousands of files may be able to use the Norton Utilities version of Unerase if they receive a "Not Enough Memory" message from the Desktop version.
