FeatherNet Computer Bulletin Board System ----------------------------------------- "The logical answer to high priced bbs software" Quick Start Instructions ------------------------ The following instructions assume you are familiar with MS/PC-DOS file handling commands. Within the file qb-start.zip are several files: ARCMA.BAT ARCMAS.BAT ARCML.BAT ARCMLS.BAT ARCMZ.BAT ARCMZS.BAT ARCMJ.BAT ARCMJS.BAT BNU2.BAT DIRLIST1 DIRMAST FNETTEST.BAT PCBNDX.S SIGDATA SRCONFIG SR.BAT USEREDIT.BAT USERS These files are an actual limited FeatherNet configuration which can assist you in being operational in minutes. o The configuration is set for communications (serial) port number 1. o You will need a fossil driver such as BNU or X00 (BNU is recommended). o The bbs directory is configured as "C:\FNET" o If your comm port is NOT to be port #1 you must change the comm port initialization command in 'sr.bat' and 'bnu2.bat' to reflect your chosen comm port. Note that a 'fossil' driver's comm port is 0 based meaning that you will tell the fossil you are using comm port 1 by passing a "0" to the fossil driver as is done in sr.bat and bnu2.bat. Installation ------------ 1. Create a sub-directory from the drive "C" ROOT directory called "FNET". From the C:\ (root) directory tyoe in "MD FNET" and press ENTER. This creates the "C:\FNET" sub-directory. 2. Perform a CHDIR (change directory) from the ROOT directory to the FNET directory by typing "CD \FNET" from the dos prompt. 3. Now you MUST UNZIP the FeatherNet bbs program, utilities ans text files into the "C:\FNET" sub-directory. (if you haven't already done this) 4. Use PKUNZIP.EXE and unzip 'fn399_1.zip' and 'fn399_2.zip' into the current (C:\FNET) sub-directory. Then unzip the file 'qk-start.zip'. 5. Once you have unzipped ALL files you MUST run the utility called "FNCFG.EXE". Go thru and become familiar with its operation. Change the bbs name, sysop's name and edit any other parameters you desire. When you press ESC from the FNCFG menu selection you will be prompted to "save the configuration". Answer "yes" (the default). Next press ENTER to save the configuration and verify/create paths/files as necessary. 6. Once again, if you change the comm port from comm port #1, you must ensure you have modified the fossil driver initialization routines to be compatible with your newly selected comm port (in "sr.bat" and in "bnu2.bat"). 7. Ensure you modify your "PATH=" statement in the 'autoexec.bat' file to include the "C:\FNET" sub-directory. 8. Make sure your 'autoexec.bat' file has an entry to load the DOS file SHARE.EXE. This is required for network file locking and is required even if you currently do not run on a network or multitask. 9. You should also have dsz.com, PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, ARJ.EXE and LHA.EXE located in a sub-directory (or ROOT directory)in you DOS path. 10. Ensure you have your fossil driver available. BNU.COM may be run from the sr.bat file. X00 may be run from the autoexec, bat file. Refer to the fossil driver documentation for fossil usage. 11. You should be ready to operate. Always start FeatherNet with the 'SR.BAT' file. 12. If you have problems verify you have the actual comm port configured with FNCFG.EXE and verify all the paths and names with fncfg.exe.
