============================ README.TXT ====================================== This file describes the features that have been added to DiskDupe and the bugs that have been fixed. If the description shows "Pro" or "Auto" it applies only to those editions, otherwise it applies to all editions. Pro - DiskDupe Pro DiskDupe Auto Pro Auto - DiskDupe Auto DiskDupe Auto Pro =============================================================================== ============ Version 3.39 1/29/92 ============ PS/2 Support ------------ DiskDupe now supports the full PS/2 line of computers. Before, when DiskDupe was run on a PS/2 model 35 and above, it wouldn't recognize the disk in the drive. Compare Fix ----------- Normally when comparing an image file to a disk, the Source is set to the image file and the Destination is set to the drive containing the disk. However if the Source and Destination were reversed and Compare was chosen, DiskDupe would create a new image file from the disk rather than comparing it. DiskDupe now senses this situation and corrects for it. ============ Version 3.38 1/15/92 ============ RamboDisk to File - Pro ----------------------- DiskDupe now allows you to copy from a RamboDisk directly to a DDI image file. This allows you to create image files much faster than copying the files to a floppy and using the floppy to create the image file. ESC Key Response Time - Auto ---------------------------- With the Auto versions of DiskDupe, sometimes the ESC key had to be hit several times to tell the program to stop copying when the disk hoppper was empty. Now the ESC key only needs to be hit once. ============ Version 3.37 11/18/91 ============ /DAT Command Line ----------------- You can now specify an alternate data file to use on the command line by using the /DAT parameter. This is useful for setting up different duplicating jobs. To use this parameter, follow it immediately with the filename of the alternate data file. For instance, if you want DiskDupe to use the data file DISK1.DAT use: "DISKDUPE /DATDISK1.DAT". Diskless Workstation Lockup --------------------------- On some diskless workstations with Ethernet cards, DiskDupe would lockup when it tried to copy a disk or when it exited without doing any copying. To fix this for the Pro editions, set Controller2 to NONE under the Setup menu. For the other editions, it will be fixed automatically. Adaptek Controller Problem -------------------------- Some older Adaptek controllers like the 2372B RLL and the 2322B ESDI caused sporadic problems, especially when used with Sony drives. DiskDupe could usually read disks but couldn't write to them. Special reset logic was added to fix this problem. ============ Version 3.36 11/8/91 ============ Rejected Disks With Sony Drive - Auto ------------------------------------- When using an autoloader with a Sony 73W-01D double speed drive, DiskDupe would sometimes started rejecting a lot of disks on the first track. This was due to the the long spin-up time of these drives. An extra 1/2 second delay was added to correct this problem. ============ Version 3.35 11/5/91 ============ 486/33 Problems --------------- - On some 486/33 systems with the bus speed set to 10Mhz or higher, DiskDupe would sometimes behave erratically. Special timing loops were added to fix this problem. ============ Version 3.34 11/4/91 ============ 3rd: & 4th: Standby - Pro ------------------------- On the destination menu, there is now an option to use the 3rd: and 4th: drives in Standby mode. Also from the command line, you can specify 34:, A3:, A4:, B3:, B4:, AB3: and AB34: to use those drive combinations as standby drives. An example of this is: "DISKDUPE IMAGE1.DDI 34:" ============ Version 3.33 9/16/91 ============ Relay Command Line ------------------ Fixed DiskDupe to recognize the command line "DISKDUPE RELAY B:" to set Relay mode. 2.8Mb Command Line - Pro ---------------------------- Fixed DiskDupe to recognize 2.8Mb drives and types in the command line. To specify in the command line that B: is a 2.8Mb drive, use /SB:3X28. If third drive is a 2.8Mb drive use /S3rd:3X28, etc. To specify the copy type is 2.8Mb use /T3X28. ============ Version 3.32 8/23/91 ============ Ignore BIOS values ------------------ On some computers that are not 100% IBM compatible (like the Cordata), DD would have problems running. DD has been changed to ignore most of the BIOS values so that is can run on these computers. Secondary Controller Lockup --------------------------- On certain computers with certain secondary controllers, the computer would lock up sporadically while copying disks. This has been fixed. ============ Version 3.30 7/22/91 ============ 2.8Mb ED Support - Pro ---------------------- DiskDupe now supports the 2.8Mb ED format. In order to use it, you will need an 2.8Mb drive (like the Sony MP-F40W-11) and an enhanced controller that supports the 1Mb data rate (like the CompatiCard IV). Some drives might also need special jumpers in order for them to recognize the 2.8Mb format. 1.4Mb and 1.2Mb Double Speed Drives - Pro ----------------------------------------- DiskDupe now supports 1.4Mb and 1.2Mb double speed drives with the CompatiCard IV or any other enhanced controller. To setup these drives from the command line use /SA:3X14DS or /SB:5X12DS. Double Speed Command Line - Pro ------------------------------- To setup a 720k double speed drive you can use the old command line /SA:3X600 or the new one /SA:3X720DS. For double speed 360k drives, you can use either /SB:5X600 or /SB:5X360DS. /NOWAIT - Pro ------------- The /NOWAIT switch allows you to create a DOS batch file that will automate the creation of disk images. For instance if you have a batch file that looks like this: DISKDUPE A: A: /FA /FOR /NOWAIT COPY *.* A: DISKDUPE A: IMAGE1.DDI /DUP /NOWAIT all you need to do is to insert a disk in drive A: and then DiskDupe will format the disk and create the image file without stopping to wait for a keyboard entry. Binary Serialization - Pro -------------------------- If you would like to insert a 32 bit binary serial number on the disk, place four ^'s in the Replacement String where the binary number should go like this: ^^^^. Different Colors ---------------- DiskDupe now offers a choice of colors. Under the Options menu, select Color to change the colors. If you have a color monitor but DiskDupe only shows black and white, type "MODE CO80" from the Dos prompt. To change the color palette from the Dos command line use "DISKDUPE /CP4". This will select the Blue color palette. 1=Black/White, 2=Cyan, 3=Red, 4=Blue. Deleting Files -------------- If you would like to delete an image file from within DiskDupe, use the File command from either the Source or Destination menus, highlight the file you want to delete and press . Read-Only Image Files --------------------- Once you create an image file, DiskDupe will now let you mark it as a read-only file. Interleaved Disks ----------------- DiskDupe can now copy Unix disks that have an interleave of 3. The copies it makes, however, will have an interleave of 1. Step Rate Changes ----------------- The stepping rates were changed slightly to work with a wide variety of drives at full speed. WD37C65, Dell Computer Problem ------------------------------- The problems that occured on some computers that use the Western Digital WD37C65 controller (like some Dell and Northgate computers) have been fixed. 720k to 1.2Mb ------------- Some computers had problems copying a 720k disk to a 1.2Mb disk. This has been fixed. DOS 5.0 Format /U ----------------- When formatting a disk that will be used as a master disk, it is fastest to use the DiskDupe Format command with Format Option set to ALWAYS. If you are going to use the DOS 5.0 Format command, use the FORMAT /U option to erase the entire disk. This will allow DiskDupe to make faster copies of this disk. ============ Version 3.24 5/23/91 ============ Set Control - Pro ----------------- When copying a set, you can now press Esc while copying to skip that image file and a message will appear asking if you want to go on to the next image file in the set or abort. Checks Image After Disk Loaded ------------------------------ If a bad image name is specified on the command line like this: "DISKDUPE BADFILE.DDI B:" DiskDupe will not ask for a disk or load a disk in the autoloader. If the /DUP option is used, DiskDupe will exit to DOS and return an errorlevel code. /DUP Pauses After Copying is Done --------------------------------- When using the /DUP command, DiskDupe will pause after copying is done. However when copying to an auto-loader and using the /DUP command, DiskDupe will exit to DOS without pausing. /DUP Doesn't Stop on Error - Auto --------------------------------- If using the Auto edition and the /DUP command, DiskDupe won't stop if there is some error like a bad image file name or bad com port but will return the errorlevel code to the batch file. Loader Rejects Every Other Disk with CompatiCard IV - Auto ------------------------------- Fixed problem with the CompatiCard IV and copying to an auto-loader where it would reject every other disk. Message After Copying Changed ----------------------------- The message that appears after copying is done was changed to "Press any key to return to menu." ============ Version 3.23 5/1/91 ============ Non-Standard Controller Cards ----------------------------- On some non-standard floppy controller cards, DiskDupe would not work. This was because they would reset the data rate when the drive motor was turned on. DiskDupe now always resets the data rate to work with these cards. ============ Version 3.22 4/28/91 ============ "General Failure Error" ----------------------- On some computers, when reading a disk right after DiskDupe, DOS would report a "General Failure Error" even though the disk was good. The workaround for this was to pull the disk out of the drive, type several times and then put the disk back in. This has been fixed so that you no longer need to do this. However, if you do a DIR of a 360k disk and then use DiskDupe to copy a 1.2Mb disk, when you exit to DOS and do a DIR, you will get an error until you pull the disk out of the drive and put it back in. Cursor Restore -------------- DiskDupe now restores the cursor to the same size it was when DiskDupe started. Size Reduction -------------- The DISKDUPE.EXE and DISKDUPE.OVR files are smaller and require less memory for Standard, Pro, and Auto editions. Set Editor, Error 203 - Pro --------------------------- The problem was fixed that would sometimes cause DiskDupe to halt with "Error 203". This happened in the Set Editor when using the F3 key to bring in image files. "Batch" Changed to "Set" - Pro ------------------------------ To avoid confusion with DOS batch files, DiskDupe now uses the word "Set" instead of the word "Batch". ============ Version 3.21 4/16/91 ============ UNIX Disks ---------- Fixed the problem that occured on some Unix disks with empty tracks at the front. DiskDupe would sometimes not copy them correctly unless these empty tracks were "dirtied" with data. ============ Version 3.20 4/10/91 ============ Serialization - Pro ------------------- Added serialization to the Pro and Auto Pro editions. This allows you to imbed a unique serial number and/or other information in each disk that is copied. Track Range - Pro ----------------- Track Range allows you to format only the part of the disk that contains data. This is especially useful if you are copying disks that will be used to install software onto a hard disk. Format: Never - Pro ------------------- Added the "Format: Never" option to work with pre-formatted disks or copy protected disks. On command line use "/FN". Verify: Never - Pro ------------------- Added the "Verify: Never" option to speed duplication when you are going to be comparing all the disks later. On command line, use "/VN". Faster 3" Copies ---------------- On 3" drives, increased stepping rate to copy disks faster. To support slower drives, it makes sure that the head is all the way in before writing to the disk. Secondary Controller Problems ----------------------------- Always turns off the secondary controller after copying is done. This eliminates the DOS "General Failure Error" message that would sometimes appear on computers with secondary controllers. Standby Drive Command Line -------------------------- Use "DISKDUPE DISK1 AB:" to access the StandBy drives from the command line. No Beep - Auto -------------- Auto versions don't beep when changing disks in the auto-loader. ============ Version 3.13 3/5/91 ============ CompatiCard I,II - Pro ---------------------- DiskDupe Pro now supports the CompatiCard I and the Compaticard II. 386/33 and 486 Problems ----------------------- On some 386/33 and 486 computers, DiskDupe would not recognize a disk in the drive or would behave erratically. 3" Drive Problems ----------------- Some older 3" drives would occasionally have problems copying a disk. The step rate was slowed down to fix this. Faster 1.4Mb Copies ------------------- Changed the format gap when copying a 1.4Mb disk from $6C to $5C to produce faster copies. ============ Version 3.12 2/25/91 ============ 720k Disks in 1.4Mb Drive ------------------------- On some 1.4Mb drives, you would have to setup the drive as a 720k drive to copy 720k disks. 1.2Mb Direct Conversions ------------------------ Copying a 1.2Mb disk to 1.4Mb drive will not require that you set the 1.4Mb drive as a 1.2Mb drive. Laptop Displays --------------- If you are running DiskDupe on a laptop where it is hard to see the screen, you can type MODE BW80 before starting DiskDupe to run in black and white. To reset DiskDupe back to color type MODE CO80. "Couldn't build menu 7" ----------------------- On some computers DiskDupe would halt with this message when it first started. /C Ignored ---------- If "DISKDUPE A: A: /C /DUP" was entered, anything after the /C was ignored Workaround was to use /C0, this has been fixed so /C is same as /C0 ============ Version 3.11 11/2/90 ============ /DUP Hang on Exit ----------------- When using DiskDupe from the command line with a command like: DISKDUPE A: B: /C1 /DUP it would occasionally hang the computer on exit so that it was necessary to reboot it. This has been fixed. Disk Sense Lockup ----------------- Sometimes when there was a disk in the drive, DiskDupe would not recognize it and you would need to press or . This has been fixed. =========== Version 3.1 10/24/90 =========== Auto Sensing ------------ When copying disks manually, DiskDupe now senses when a disk has been inserted into the disk drive so that you no longer have to press after the disk has been changed. Auto Sensing has a safety feature to prevent overwriting a disk that has been accidently left in the drive. Whenever DiskDupe is writing to a disk, it makes sure that any disk in the drive is taken out first. If you want to use the disk in the drive, take it out and re-insert it or press . When using the A: & B: Standby Drive option, this safety feature is only turned on for the first disk. Auto Sensing keeps the drive light on all the time. When DiskDupe alerts you, it is safe to take out the disk. Secondary Controller - Pro -------------------------- DiskDupe now supports a secondary controller. Your computer probably has a secondary controller if it is an AT or 386 type and you have more than two disk drives. If this is the case, select the Ext. Drive option under the Options menu and select Secondary High or Secondary Low. If you have an XT type computer or an AST computer, select the Primary High option. If you get an error reading from the 3rd: or 4th: drive, try other Ext. Drive options. To specify the Ext. Drive from the command line, use /XPH, /XSH or /XSL for Primary High, Secondary High or Secondary Low. Command Line Options - Pro -------------------------- Several command line options were not documented in the manual. To set the copy type to 320k, use /T5X320. To set the type of drive for your 3rd: or 4th: drive use /S3rd:360k or /S4th:720k, etc. To use a RamboDisk on the command line use RAMBO1 or RAMBO2 like this: DISKDUPE RAMBO1 A: /C1 /DUP 5" to 3" Conversions -------------------- DiskDupe now lets you copy a 5" disk to a 3" disk directly. The 3" disk will be formatted to look like a 5" disk so only half of the 3" disk will be used. RDFormat - Pro -------------- A new program has been added that formats a RamboDisk, called RDFormat. This is useful if you want to clean out your RamboDisk before copying new files to it so that DiskDupe will duplicate as fast as possible. To use it, type RDFORMAT F: if your RamboDisk is drive F:. If you are using RDFormat in a batch file and don't want it to stop to ask if it is okay to format the RamboDisk, use the /G parameter: RDFORMAT F: /G. Bad Disk Alarm -------------- To make sure you don't accidently put a bad disk in the wrong stack when copying manually, DiskDupe will now sound an alarm whenever it encounters a bad disk. It will also tell you which drive the bad disk is in which is helpful when using the Standby Drive. XT Run Time Error 201 --------------------- On some XT clones, DiskDupe would sometimes halt when it was first starting up with Run Time Error 201. This has been fixed. Misc Improvements ----------------- DiskDupe now responds to the key more quickly when you want to stop duplicating disks. The file ALRES.DAT is no longer needed. The information in this file has been incorporated into the DISKDUPE.DAT file. The top line is now centered when duplicating and won't flash a "c-" when DiskDupe quits. If is pressed while duplicating, DiskDupe will no longer pause for a few seconds before it starts duplicating again. Some of the menus were resized and repositioned. Changed address in HELPME.EXE to Los Altos address. ================================= END ========================================
