the following is a release by the united states geological survey, national earthquake information center: a strong earthquake occurred in southern california about 15 miles northeast of palm springs at 10:50 pm MDT today, apr 22, 1992. the magnitude was computed at 6.0 on the richter scale. the quake was recorded by the u. s. geological survey at golden, colorado. the earthquake was felt throughout southern california and as far away as phoenix, arizona and las vegas, nevada. no reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size. this is the largest earthquake in this general area since an event on july 8, 1986 which also registered 6.0 on the richter scale and caused some damage and injuries in the palm springs area. on october 1, 1987 a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the whittier area of southern california, killing 8 people.
