--- ------- ---------- --- ENVE --- ---------- ------- --- Ver 2.0 Envelope Printing Program by TONY AVENA 5/22/92 I. INTRODUCTION ENVE is a PC program to print envelopes on an Epson (or compatible) printer. (Version 2 has added the Hp Laserjet and IBM printers.) It maintains a small data base of addresses which can be added to from the program. It was made to be very simple to run. In fact hopefully you don't even need this manual. If you don't like to read, then just go ahead and run the program. You should do just fine. ENVE has one main screen which displays your command selection as well as your current envelope. All subscreens are called up by holding down the ALT key and typing and a Command letter. All subscreens will return you back to the main screen with the exception of the Print screen which has an option to jump directly into the Defaults screen. The ALT commands can be executed at any time while on the main screen. II. WHATS NEW WITH VER 2 Version 2 of ENVE has added the following: A. An option to change the output port to any legal DOS port of file. B. A better address centering alogrithm. C. Support for IBM compatable and Hp Laserjet printers. III. SETTING UP AND RUNNING There are four files which come with ENVE: ENVE.EXE - The program. ENVEDEFA.DAT - The data file which contains program defaults. ENVEADDR.DAT - The data file which contains your address list. ENVEDOCU.TXT - This documentation manual. All these files should be together in the same directory. To run the program, change to the drive and/or directory containing your ENVE files and type: ENVE and hit the Enter key. .... Pretty simply huh! IV. COMMANDS IN MAIN SCREEN For those who still feel insecure, the following is a short explanation of the commands available from the main screen. C - Clear: Will clear the address on the envelope. D - Defaults: Will jump to a screen which will display your current defaults and allow you to change them. Changes are saved automatically. P - Print: Will jump to a print screen to give printing instructions and Print envelope. Q - Quit: Will exit the program and return back to DOS. R - Recall: Will jump to a recall screen which will read the address data file and let you choose an address for your envelope. S - Save: Will save the address currently shown in your envelope to the address data file. V. SELECTING DEFAULTS "ALT D" will bring up the Defaults menu. From here you can change the following settings: ADDRESS DATA FILE - All addresses you save using "ALT S" are saved in an address data file. You may use the default file (ENVEADDR.DAT) or select another name of your choosing. You may keep several data files (one for business, one for you and one for your wife) and switch between them any time you want. You may even keep them in a different directory from the program as long as you specify the path in front of the file name. Its best to allow the program to create your address data files but if you wish to create your own file from another data base or rearrange addresses from outside the program, you may do so. The format for all address data files must be exact. 40 characters for each of the four lines of your address followed by a 0A 0D (CR/LF). If the count of any line is different from 162 the address will be shifted. The file is standard ascii and can be edited with any editor. This is the only way to delete unwanted addresses or rearrange addresses. Make sure your editor can handle lines which are 162 characters long with out truncating. It is best to add addresses using the program and the Save command. ENVELOPE SIZE - You may set the size of the envelope you wish to print on. This will allow the address to be properly centered and determine how long of an address is allowed. Enter the height and width separately. Enter the sizes in inches using up to two decimal points. There is a small block to the right of the screen which shows the standard envelope sizes for your convenience. OUTPUT PORT - The output port can be set to any legal DOS output device or a file of your choosing. Legal devices include PRN, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, AUX, and CON. This allows you to print to printer that are hooked to other than the standard PRN (LPT1). You may also output the results to a file instead of the printer. To do this, simply enter the path and file name where you want the output to go, instead of a device name. These files may later copied to the printer. The envelope will print out properly because all needed printer codes are imbedded in the file. PRINTER TYPE - Ver 2 allows for 5 different printer types. When you select this option, a box will pop up on the right of the screen with available printers. Enter the number (not name) of the printer you wish the envelope to print out on. Most printers are compatible with one of the available selections. RETURN ADDRESS - Up to three lines of your return address must be entered here, each individually. All capitols spaces any characters will be printed as typed here. VI. SHAREWARE Oh no you say. Here it comes. Time to ask for money. But wait, NO, this is a FREE program. You don't need to send any money for it unless you feel like sending some. I've written this and given it to the PC community as my repayment for all the programs they have given me. If you think this is really a great program (I think I'm flattering myself here) and would like to encourage me, you can send a few bucks, or even just a nice letter so I know someone is using my program. I would also like to hear of any problems or suggestions. Don't promise to fix them, just want to hear about them. Please send any correspondence to: Tony Avena 4821 Sunnyview St. Louis, Mo. 63128 May God bless you. T H E E N D
