    I have been searching for a small, yet powerful text editor for
Windows. I was not satisfied with many of them. Others, though they did
work, would not save text in the same format as I saw on the screen. When I
go into DOS and view the text it is not set right. MegaEdit has changed
that.

    Editors I have used tend to set word-wrap and margins according to how
large a screen you are using. If you have the program running in a full
window, there is a tendency for the lines to be longer. These lines would
be saved in this format. This means I had to go into a DOS editor and
repaginate the text. For that matter I may as well have just used the DOS
editor from the start. Another program I had tried would set the line
according to the size of the font I used. Smaller fonts get more than 76
characters per line, while larger ones got less. MegaEdit has a word-wrap
feature. If you set it at 76, the text wraps at 76. No matter how large or
small a window you have. This is the way word-wrap should work.

    Computer Witchcraft, makers of MegaEdit, extracted the editor from a
larger program they are working on, and added a few enhancements to make it
the stand-alone program it is.

    MegaEdit is a shareware program. It is a Windows program, and has
drop-down menus and mouse support. You can do all the standard
cut/copy/paste features. In addition you can change colors of the screen
and text; Set Tabs; Word-Wrap; Search text with replace and more.

    You can Export or Convert text  for DOS, Macintosh, and UNIX. Files are
saved in plain ASCII format and do not have any special formatting codes
embedded.

    Registered users can get support from a variety of sources including
CompuServe. Owners are provided with registration information. When a new
version is released, all you have to do is download it. This cuts downs on
mailings, and provides users with faster access to new releases. It seems
as if more and more are going this route. I think it is a better
alternative.
 

 Look for MegaEdit on your favorite BBS. Latest version as of this review
is v2.03.
