Please keep those comments and suggestions coming. November promises to be an exciting month for enticing videocassette releases. Shirley MacLaine stars in "Out On a Limb," which tells the story of one woman's spiritual journey that leads her around the world and beyond. In the adventure film "Exiled in America," Edward Albert portrays a popular freedom fighter who flees Central America for the safety of the USA, only to find that the death squad's chase does not stop at the border. In another adventure movie, Sean Young and Jeff Fahey star in the story of a police artist whose latest drawing is of no ordinary suspect--it's his wife, in "Sketch Artist." "A Woman Called Moses" re-enacts the life story of Harriet Ross Tubman, founder of the Underground Railroad, which led hundreds of slaves to freedom in the North before the Civil War. Tubman also aided the Union Army by mobilizing black troops against the Confederates, freeing slaves, and staging raids on plantations. Cicely Tyson stars in this highly acclaimed historical film. Jeff Daniels stars in "Grand Tour Disaster in Time," a suspenseful, emotional film featuring a battle against time bandits in an attempt to save a town from total destruction. The suspense thriller "Strays" brings together Kathleen Quinlan and Timothy Busfield as a couple who buy a remote country home, unaware of the mysterious circumstances of the former owner's death. They must then fight for possession of their home against a pack of vicious felines. In "The Pamela Principle," a man undergoing a serious mid-life crisis is swept off his feet by a stunning 20-year-old model, then must choose between his fantasy come true and his family. Young executive Bill Paxton buys a house already inhabited by a vile, murderous derelict in "The Vagrant." Hailed as a masterpiece of action cinema, the Chinese film "The Killer" tells the story of a mob hitman followed by a maverick cop. As the two enemies stalk each other, a strange bond forms, blurring the line between good and evil. The movie begins with a young Whoopi being thrown out of a Catholic school. She did not fit in then, and she sure does not fit in now; the results are hilarious. Present day Whoopi is a singer in a club. She dates the owner, but wants to break it off because of his ganster activities. Before she gets a chance, however, she witnesses her boyfriend committing murder, and high-tails it to the cops. The police decide to protect their witness under cover of habit, placing her in a convent. In order to look like a real nun, she has to have some job to do, so she ends up as, what else, the choir director. The types of songs she has the nuns kicking up their heals to are not popular with the Mother Superior, but make for a huge congregation on Sunday, much to the priest's delight. Although Goldberg is not a singer by trade, she carries off her role well in "Sister Act." Bouncey, vivacious Maggie Smith brightens up the screen with her sunny disposition. From the seedy atmosphere of the nightclub to the scowling countenance of the Mother Superior, Goldberg is in her comic element in "Sister Act." The babysitter (Elizabeth Shue) is a senior in high school who was supposed to go out with her gorgeous boyfriend tonight. He cancels out with some lousy excuse, leaving her with nothing to do but accept an invitation to babysit for two kids whose parents are in a bind. The kids are Sara (Maia Brewton), a rambunctious young girl obsessed with Viking lore and her older pre-teen brother, who has a big-time crush on the babysitter. When the babysitter's best friend, Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller), runs away from home and ends up stranded at the bus station in downtown Chicago, the whole gang heads into the city from the suburbs, driving the family station wagon into one adventure after another. One especially uproarious scene is in a blues bar where the gang finds themselves part of the entertainment, singing the "Babysitting Blues." And, to think, it all starts with a flat tire on the freeway, leading to a high-speed chase in a tow truck, and loads of fun from there. Kids and adults alike can enjoy this light-hearted film. Though short on meaning and prominence, "Adventures in Babysitting" is one sleeper you won't want to miss. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- "A FISH CALLED WANDA" * * * * Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his supporting role as Otto, the sadistic would-be intellectual in "A Fish Called Wanda," a heist spoof about a bunch of greedy people who collectively steal millions of dollars worth of diamonds, then try to make off with the loot for themselves individually. Jamie Lee Curtis is Wanda, involved with George (Tom Georgeson), a middle-aged crook who, along with his stuttering, devoted co-hort Ken (Michael Palin), plans to break into the nesting place of some flawless diamonds. He needs a weapons specialist, however, to do the job right. Enter Wanda's "brother," Otto, who is actually Wanda's other lover and co-conspirator. They immediately have George carted off to jail with the intention of taking the loot and heading out of the country. Of course, problems have a way of creeping up, namely in the person of stuffy barrister, Archie Leach (John Cleese), who happens to be defending Wanda's jailbird lover. Before being jailed, George seems to have moved the jewels somewhere unbeknownst to the others, and Wanda means to use any way necessary to find out if his attorney knows where the loot is. Monty Python honed Cleese and Palin's comic skills to a sharp edge. Cleese comes off perfectly as the pompous English barrister, and Palin's frustrated thieving accomplice is right on target. Palin's funniest scenes involve his intense love of animals conflicting with the need to "off" the only eye-witness who can identify George as having been at the crime scene - an elderly woman who never goes anywhere without her three small dogs. Every time Ken tries to kill the poor lady, he causes himself overwhelming grief by getting a dog instead. Curtis's portrayal of ruthless Wanda Gershwitz heats up the screen, while Kline's idiocy makes viewers split their sides laughing. While not appropriate for children, "A Fish Called Wanda" provides all the chuckles necessary for a truly classic funny film. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART 1" * * * Although there never was a "History of the World, Part 2" as suggested by promos at the end of Part 1, the original and only is definitely funny enough for two movies. Some parts are hilarious, some are downright stupid in their silliness, but, all in all, Mel Brooks' attempt at re-creating the highlights of history is highly entertaining. The film combines several skits, some very short, a couple laboriously long, almost all of which feature Brooks as actor as well as director. We begin with 2 million B.C., where cavemen and cavewomen, led by Sid Caesar, discover art and music. The latter comes about as a result of Caesar dropping a stone on a friend's foot. A bit later, God delivers upon Moses the 15 Commandments on three tablets. Moses drops one, thus creating the now famous Ten Commandments. The Roman Empire is next. Brooks portrays the predecessor of today's comedian - the stand-up philosopher. His agent has him booked on the gig of a lifetime, of course, Caesar's Palace. The emperor (Dom Deluise), the Empress Nympho (Madeline Kahn), an escaped slave trying to avoid being dinner for a pack of lions (Gregory Hines), even a few vestal virgins, all of them revel in hilarious jest, suggesting what might have been, but probably wasn't. The movie continues through The Spanish Inquisition (again starring Brooks), then into the French Revolution (with Harvey Korman). The creativity seems endless, as do some of the skits which outlast their funniness. Nevertheless, "History of the World, Part 1" is a comedy classic, one of Mel Brooks's better endeavors.
