The program was designed to print a character as the user typed a letter -- just like a typewriter. I even included a BELL sound after column 70! As the program expanded other features were added such as 1) File saving utilites, 2) Character at a time printing & Line at a time printing, 3) Uses for envelopes, letter paper, and legal paper, & 4) 3D Menus. So here it is. Please read the instructions on installation and the brief version of the documentation below. ******************************************************************************* ******************************************************************************* Computer Requirements for using TYPE WRITE 1.0. =============================================== Dos Version: No Known Limitation Memory Requirements: Less than 60K Hard Disk Requirements: Less than 100K Printer Type: Dot Matrix Bubble Jet Daisy Wheel FILES INCLUDED: TW.EXE TYPE WRITE 1.0 program README.EXE readme program README.TXT The text README.EXE displays ORDERFRM.TXT TYPE WRITE 1.0 order form SAMPLE.LET A sample TYPE WRITE letter SAMPLE.ENV A sample TYPE WRITE envelope INSTALL.EXE Install program ******************************************************************************* ******************************************************************************* Instructions for installing TYPE WRITE 1.0 1) Make sure you have all the files listed above. 2) If you do not have a hard disk, it is already installed! You can start using type write immediately from the floppy diskette (i.e., the program's installation disk). 3) If you have a hard disk & you wish to install TYPE WRITE on the hard disk, simply type the following at the Dos prompt: A: INSTALL where A is the floppy diskette drive where TYPE WRITE is located. The main menu has three options. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to move to the selection and then type to select OR simply type the number in front of the option. The options are discussed briefly below: 1. TYPE WRITE In the File Selection Menu do one of three things: 1) Type 'c' or to Cancel. 2) Type 'n' to create new document. Then use UP/DOWN arrows to highlight page size & hit to select {Hit to go back}. 3) Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to browse file menu to find needed file. To Change Drive or Directory or Select a file, type 'o' or . (NOTE: The only files displayed will be TYPE WRITE files.) After you have chosen Open to edit a file or New to create a new file, you will enter the Type Write screen. If you chose to create a new document and to print after every character, then, after every key you hit, the key will appear on the printer paper at the print head position unless the key you hit was an illegal key. In that case, a error sound should be heard and the computer and printer will do nothing. Illegal keys are all function keys. If you chose to print after every Line or Open a TYPE WRITE file, then the following keys are active. All normal keys used in typing - Delete character - when done - to enter INSERT mode {BIG CURSOR MODE} LEFT/RIGHT{arrow} -to move within already present text -to tab {must be in INSERT mode to extend a line} - To print entire line. After the document has been typed, Hit . Then answer the questions to save file, return to document, etc. 2. PRINTER SETUP In the Printer Selection Menu do one of two things: 1) Type 'c' to Cancel. 2) Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to browse printer menu to find the printer that you are using or a compatible printer. To select a printer type 's' or . {NOTE: The only printers listed are the printers that were tried and passed my specs successfully. If yours is not listed, try a compatible printer from the list. If none of the printers work, don't give up! You can contact me & I may be able to help. I plan to continue adding printers to the list as I am able to test them.} Afterwards, select the port the printer is attached to by moving with the UP/DOWN arrow keys to highlight your choice and typing when your choice is highlighted (In most cases, your choice should be LPT1). 3. EXIT PROGRAM Does what is says. ******************************************************************************* ******************************************************************************* You need to know that ... 1) Pica (i.e., 10 Pitch, 10 cpi) is the best character size because it is the only character size that the screen and paper output match letter for letter. That is, in Pica, 5 inches from the left of the screen corresponds to 5 inches from the the left paper border. 2) NLQ will work but is much slower than DRAFT because the print head passes twice for each NLQ character and once for each DRAFT character. 3) Changing the font, character size, etc. should be done BEFORE entering the type write screen (the screen with the ruler). 4) No long term (1 year+) testing has been done with this program with any printer. Hence, I cannot predict what will be the long term effect of using the program. But with the 6 month testing period my printers endured, I had no problems nor has the performance of any of these printers been marginal since that time. ******************************************************************************* ******************************************************************************* Specific Printer Information Canon BJ-10e,Epson FX-80, Epson FX-286 - No problems. Epson LQ-800 - Space character performs slowly. Epson LQ-1010 - Space character performs slowly. Epson T-1000 - No problems. IBM Quietwriter - No problems. Star NX-10,NX-1000 - Flip dip switch 2-1 OFF. No problems. Must be in Standard Mode not IBM mode. Star NX-1001 - Flip dip switch 1-2 OFF & 1-1 ON. No problems. If your printer is not listed, then first choose a printer close to it from the printer list. If your choice does not perform correctly, then try a printer from the COMPATIBLES list. The main problem will probably be with the printing of SPACES and CARRIAGE RETURNS. The space will not be forgotten but may not be printed until a actual character is typed. Likewise, the carriage will return when you send an actual character. If you are having trouble or would like to find out if it is possible to have the SPACES and CARRIAGE RETURN problem eliminated then please contact me. ******************************************************************************* I hope you enjoy using TYPE WRITE.
