If you are running a version before .75 beta of Mutant or are installing a new Mutant, you should setup Mutant or at least run the setup program. New setup of Mutant (quick info) -------------------------------- 1. Unzip the distribution file (you have done this already since you are reading this) 2. Run Setup (see below) 3. Make sure you have at least FILES=30 in your CONFIG.SYS. 4. Read this file carefully. 5. Read the documentation and print the documention if possible. 6. Go into the configuration and enter things like the name of your BBS. 6. Try out the sample files and modify them as necessary. SETUP ----- Setup will unpack the files within the distribution file and create files necessary for it to run. NOTE: as SETUP unpacks the files, it deletes them. Therefore, you should keep the distribution file on backup somewhere. Use the Cursor Up and Down keys and ENTER to select one of the following: Source Path - This is where you have unzipped the distribution files. Destination Path - This is where you want the BBS installed. Name - This is your name or Alias you will go by on the BBS (35 chars max). Port - This is the COM port your modem is on (1-4). Install MTMAIL - MTMAIL is an echo/netmail processor for Mutant. If you do not plan on doing Echo/Netmail at this time, leave this set to No. Modem Type - By default, SETUP creates a setup for modems which are compatiable with the Hayes Smartmodem 1200. However, other modem definitions are defined in MODEM.INF and you can select one that may fit your modem better. If it does not include one: 1. Install Mutant anyway 2. Read the MUTANT.TXT documentation 3. Run, MTNT CONFIG and edit your modem configuration. 4. Go to the directory with SETUP and MODEM.INF 5. Run, SETUP /C=dest.path\CONFIG.DAT 6. Enter the name of your modem. The last three steps add your modem to MODEM.INF for future use. You may wish to rezip this into the distribution and place it on your BBS. Install QWK Suppt- Unpacks MTNTQ and moves MTQ-*.* to the screens directory. You will still need to run MTQWKCFG and MTNETCFG in order to use MTQWK and MTNET. ESC aborts the setup. F2 attempts to do a complete setup of Mutant. F10 just creates CONFIG.DAT in the destination directory. Distribution Files If you do not have the following files, you may have a bad/virus infected version of Mutant BBS. If so, please inform the sysop of what is missing. NOTE: I would prefer to use ZIP to distribute Mutant as the latest version supports the best compression of all archive utilities available. However, legal issues arise with using ZIP. Therefore, I am using Yoshi's LHA v2.13 program to create self-extracting archive files for the distribution until I can resolve the legal issues with using ZIP. SETUP.EXE - Unpacks Mutant, makes directories and creates a sample configuration. MODEM.INF - Known configurations for different modems. If you're modem does not appear in this file, feel free to add it into this file and rezip the file into the distribution zip. README.TXT - This file. MTNTE.EXE (or MTNTE.ZIP) MTNT.EXE - The BBS executable MTNTS.EXE (or MTNTS.ZIP) MTNT.PIF - Sample .PIF file for Windows 3.x 386 Enhanced Mode MTNT.ICO - Icon for Windows 3.x MT-PIF.DVP - Sample Desqview control file SYSFILES\*.* - Sample system files. YOU CANNOT SETUP MUTANT WITHOUT at least looking at or using these. SCREENS\*.* - ASCII/ANSI screens associated with the sample menus MTNTD.EXE (or MTNTD.ZIP) MUTANT.TXT - Main documention for Mutant MULTNODE.TXT - Documentation about setting up Mutant for Multinodes STRUCTS.TXT - Mutant's file structures and programming info SUPPORT.LST - A list of support BBS' for Mutant MTNTM.EXE (or MTNTS.ZIP) MTMAIL.EXE - A simple echo/netmail processor for Mutant MTMAIL.TXT - Documentation for MTMAIL MTMAIL.CFG - A paritially setup configuration file for MTMAIL, setup adds stuff to this file EXPORT.BAT - Sample batch file to export messages from Mutant IMPORT.BAT - Sample batch file to import messages into Mutant MSGVIEW.EXE - Let's you view/edit .MSG files MSGVIEW.TXT - Documentation for above MTNTQ.EXE (or MTNTQ.ZIP) MTQWK.EXE - A QWK mail door for Mutant MTNET.EXE - Allows you to be a "node" of a QWK echomail network. MTQWKCFG.EXE - Creates a configuration file for MTQWK. You need to run this before running MTQWK. SETUP may have done most of the setup for you. MTNETCFG.EXE - Creates a configuration file for MTNET. You need to run this before running MTNET and follow any other setup instructions given in MTNET.TXT. MTQWK.TXT - Documentation for MTQWK/MTQWKCFG. MTNET.TXT - Documentation for MTNET/MTNETCFG. MTQ-*.* - Screens necessary for MTQWK, you may edit these. My apologies for the documentation. I wish I had somebody who could write better documentation, but you are stuck with me writing it. You should be able to figure it out without to much difficulty.
