MS-DOS and Windows are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. *************************************************************** HEWLETT-PACKARD LASERJET 4L PRINTING SYSTEM FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.1 INTRODUCTION *************************************************************** The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 is a collection of software that gives you convenient access to your printer's features when used in the Microsoft Windows 3.1 environment. *************************************************************** FEATURES OF THE HP LASERJET 4L PRINTING SYSTEM FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.1 **************************************************************** The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00 provides the following new features: Automatic Setup. The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 provides its own automatic setup program. It is NOT necessary to install this printing system through the Control Panel. Setup instructions are detailed in this README file. Graphical Status Window. The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 Status Window graphically displays printing status and error information about the printer on the PC screen. A small Window pops up automatically when a job is printed and displays an image of the printer as well as the name of the print job and the current time. If an error occurs during the print job, information is provided in the Status Window regarding the error. In addition, condition-specific Help information can be accessed by pressing F1 or choosing the Help option on the Status Window menu. The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 Bi-Tronics I/O communication driver for the PC and printer parallel port allows bi-directional communication to the PC in order to provide status and error information to be displayed by the Status Window. Support for Sound. The Microsoft Windows 3.1 Sound driver for the PC speaker as well as several sound files are provided with the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System. This sound driver utilizes the audio speaker of the PC to communicate printer conditions verbally in conjunction with the Status Window. Updated Version of Microsoft Print Manager for Windows 3.1. This updated version of the Print Manager provides an expanded Tool Bar from which you can pause and resume print queues as well as pause, resume, re-order, and delete individual print jobs. Additionally, a new Information button is provided which when pressed activates the HP LaserJet 4L Status Window. The Print Manager must be enabled and activated for proper Status Window performance. The Setup program automatically enables and activates the Windows Print Manager during installation. Support for Graphics Quality. The LaserJet 4L Printing System supports 300, 150, and 75 dpi. The actual graphics resolution settings are denoted by the descriptive terms of High, Medium, and Low rather than the actual dpi. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces. All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 4L printer are supported in the 19U symbol set. To obtain WYSIWYG results, use HP Intellifont which supports on-the-fly screen fonts to match your printer fonts in Windows 3.1. Support for HP-GL/2 Support for HP-GL/2 is provided in the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00. Under the Options Dialog in the Printer Setup, an option of "Graphics Mode" is available. Two options are present: HP-GL/2 or Raster. The first choice enables HP-GL/2 which will increase print performance. The second choice uses raster only. The default graphics mode is set to raster for the HP LaserJet 4L. Support for EconoMode Support for EconoMode is provided in the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00 within the Options Dialog. There are two options available, On or Off. With EconoMode enabled the output will resemble draft mode, using fewer dots in order to conserve toner. Support for Print Density Print density support is provided in the Options Dialog. Adjust the density of the printer according to the desired density. The density range is one (lightest) to five (darkest). Dialog Support for REt Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the REt (Resolution Enhancement technology) box. The options here are Light, Medium, Dark, and Off. *************************************************************** MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS *************************************************************** To use the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1, you must have the following: - An HP LaserJet 4L printer - DOS version 3.31 or later - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later - An IBM-compatible 286 computer, or faster - A high-density floppy disk drive - 2 MBytes RAM (4 MBytes recommended for satisfactory Windows performance) - A VGA-compatible (or higher resolution) monitor - 1.75 MBytes of hard disk space available to install the components of the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1. NOTE: Most devices connected between the HP LaserJet 4L printer and the host computer prevent the printer from sending data back to the computer. Therefore, the Status Window will not operate with HP LaserJet 4L printers on networks, the HP LaserJet Fax, most hardware print spoolers, some software print spoolers, and some switch boxes. *************************************************************** INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS *************************************************************** To install the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00: 1. Start Microsoft Windows. 2. Insert the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 Setup disk into a high-density 3.5" floppy disk drive (usually A or B). 3. From the Windows Program Manager select the File menu. 4. Choose RUN. 5. Type A:\SETUP (or B:\SETUP) and press ENTER. 6. Follow the instructions on the computer screen. NOTE: Once you have installed the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1, if an older Hewlett-Packard printer driver installation for the LaserJet 4 family is later attempted, Windows will prompt the user with the following message: "The currently installed HPPCL5E.DRV is newer... than the one you are attempting to install. Do you still want to install the file?" Select CANCEL for this dialog. If NO is selected, there is the possibility of damaging critical files needed for the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1. Do not select YES unless the older driver is desired. A more recent driver for your particular printer can be obtained by calling HP Driver Distribution at (303)353-7650 in the USA and Canada or through your authorized HP dealer in other countries. NOTE: In the event that you would like to deinstall the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1, the following instructions provide that ability: 1. From the Windows Program Manager select the File menu. 2. Choose RUN. 3. Type C:\WINDOWS\DINSTALL -FDINSTALL.INS 4. You will be prompted to ensure that the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System is to be deinstalled. This deinstallation will only disable the Status Window of HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1.
