This printer driver is intended for use with Microsoft Word version 5.5 for MS-DOS only. Any use of the included file with any version of Microsoft Word earlier than 5.5 is untested, and Microsoft does not guarantee the results. TO INSTALL SUPPORT FOR THE HP LASERJET 4 ======================================== 1. Insert the enclosed DW0644 disk in your floppy disk drive. 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER copy :\hp4.prd where is your floppy disk drive and is the location of your Word program directory. For example, if the disk is in drive A and your Word program directory is on drive C and is called WORD5, type the following and press ENTER: copy a:\hp4.prd c:\word5 3. Start Word 5.5. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup. From the Files list, select HP4.PRD. Choose the OK button. Word uses POSTSCRP.PRD to support PostScript(R) printing on LaserJet printers. For more information, see the "PostScript Printers" section in Chapter 2 of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual. MODEL INFORMATION ================= .PRD Specification: Internal Fonts ---------------------------------- CourierPC 10,12 Courier 6,8,10,12,14 Univers(R) 1-127 Lettergothic 6,8,10,12,14 AntiqueOlv 1-127 UniversCD (condensed) 1-127 Arial(R) 1-127 Albertus 1-127 CG_Omega 1-127 CG_Times 1-127 Times New Roman(R) 1-127 Garamond 1-127 Clarendon 1-127 Coronet 1-127 Marigold 1-127 Symbol 1-127 WingDings 1-127 Word and LaserJet Symbol Sets ----------------------------- Word creates some special fonts to access additional symbol sets. For example, the CourierPC font is identical to regular Courier but uses the PC-8 symbol set to support the line draw feature of Word. Fonts ending in "Legal," such as PrestigeLegal, are identical to fonts without the suffix, but use the Legal character set, which includes the copyright symbol, registered trademark symbol, and others. Fonts ending in "850" use the IBM(R) PC-850 character set, which includes an expanded set of international characters. Word does not always support every symbol set available. You can access unsupported symbol sets by using the MergePRD program to modify your .PRD file. For more information, see Chapter 5, "Using the MergePRD Program," of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual. Adding Support for Fonts ------------------------ Word supports most of the LaserJet fonts currently available, but new fonts frequently appear on the market. You can add support for any new LaserJet font using the MergePRD program and the Tagged Font Matrix (TFM) files supplied by the printer manufacturer. The .TFM files for new HP fonts are stored on the AutoFont Support disk that comes with the fonts. For more information, see Chapter 5, "Using the MergePRD Program," of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual. Downloading Fonts ----------------- To use downloadable fonts with the downloading program in Word, you should place the appropriate .PRD file, a .DAT file with the same filename as the .PRD file, and the font set files in the same directory (or on the same floppy disk). The .PRD and .DAT files must be in the same directory. The .DAT file is automatically copied with the .PRD file when you use Setup to install your printer driver. For more information on downloading LaserJet fonts, see Chapter 4, "Downloading Fonts," of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual. Landscape Printing ------------------ The LaserJet 4 can rotate internal fonts to print portrait fonts in landscape orientation; you do not need a landscape .PRD file to print in landscape orientation. However, you cannot combine portrait and landscape formats on the same page. Autorotation ------------ Font autorotation printing is available on the HP LaserJet 4. The HPGL2 graphics resolution uses the Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language to draw vector graphics rather than bitmapped images. The HPGL2 resolution can print most graphics more quickly than the standard bitmapped resolutions, although it requires more memory. HPGL2 graphics print at 300 dots per inch (dpi). Pattern and Shading ------------------- You can access the font pattern and font shading capability of the HP LaserJet 4 using the Colors box in the Format Character dialog box. Three font patterns and Dark, Medium, Light, and White font shading are available. Line Drawing ------------ Lines drawn with the line draw feature of Word should be formatted with the CourierPC or Linedraw fonts to take full advantage of the line draw or Format Borders features. Unprintable Regions ------------------- Like other laser printers, LaserJet printers do not print all the way to the edge of a page. The area around the edge of a page where the printer cannot print is called an unprintable region. The sizes of the unprintable region for the HP LaserJet 4 are included in the "Printer Specifications" section below. In Word versions 4.0 and earlier, you have to adjust the margins and page length settings in the Format Margins command to accommodate unprintable regions. You do not have to do so in Word version 5.5. You should select the exact margins and page dimensions you want. Paper Feed ---------- The Paper Feed box in the File Printer Setup dialog box should normally be set to Continuous. However, on the LaserJet 4 you can select different paper trays or an envelope feeder. If you select Mixed, the first page will feed from bin 1, and succeeding pages will feed from bin 2. LaserJet Memory --------------- Printing downloadable fonts and graphics can fill up your printer's memory. If that happens, the printer will present an error message, and your document will lose text or print incorrectly. If you're using downloadable fonts, you can use fewer fonts or smaller font sizes, or you can substitute cartridge fonts instead. To reduce the amount of memory a graphic requires, you can print the graphic at a lower resolution or make it smaller. You can also purchase additional memory for most LaserJet models. Printer Specifications ---------------------- Font cartridges: One font cartridge slot Downloadable fonts: Yes Graphics resolution (dpi): HPGL2, 75, 150, 300 NOTE: Printing with HPGL2 as the graphics resolution in Microsoft Word 5.5 produces poor results when graphics are printed and paragraph shading is used. For best results, set the graphics resolution to 300 dpi in the File Printer Setup dialog box. Max. num. of fonts per page: Limited only by memory Memory: 2 megabytes (MB), expandable to 34 MB for the LaserJet Unprintable regions (in inches): Top: 0.20, Bottom: 0.20, Left: 0.25, Right 0.25 Bin support: 100-sheet MP tray (10 envelopes) 250-sheet paper tray Optional: 500-sheet paper tray Envelope feeder (75 envelopes)
