TEMPRA Modeler(tm) Introduced at Comdex 3D Modeling and Rendering Software Rounds Out TEMPRA Multimedia Product Line (COMDEX/FALL '93, Las Vegas -- Nov. 15, 1993) TEMPRA, a division of Mathematica, Inc., the Lakeland, Florida-based multimedia software company, announces the addition of TEMPRA Modeler, a Windows-based modeling and rendering program for creating photorealistic 3D images, to its TEMPRA family. The Gamma release can be ordered for $99, November 15, 1993. Company representatives will demonstrate TEMPRA Modeler at Comdex booth A284 in the Las Vegas Convention Center. Unlike CAD systems, TEMPRA Modeler is based on solid modeling (non-polygonal) technology, a building block approach in which basic solids like spheres, cylinders, cones, and other shapes are combined to form complex solids. TEMPRA Modeler offers artists the option of rendering images with ray tracing or polygonal shading. Artists can use polygonal shading to quickly preview the image as it is being created, then use ray trace to generate the final image. Ray trace is used to achieve 24-bit true-color images, which feature shadows, reflections, surface mapping, and transparency. Because TEMPRA Modeler uses a mathematical formula to create models, rendered images are smoother than polygonal equivalent images, such as those created in expensive programs like Autodesk 3D Studio, Crystal Graphics' Crystal Topas, and Macromedia MacroModel. "We are excited to be introducing TEMPRA Modeler at this Comdex show, especially with the introduction of our other new Windows products," said Derek Hodges, president of Mathematica, Inc. "Our customers now have all the multimedia tools they could dream of. Not only do we believe TEMPRA products to be technically the best available, but they are priced for the mass multimedia market." TEMPRA Modeler's 3D modeling capabilities include spline-curve control, boolean functions, TrueType font support, perspective and orthographic model views, spot/parallel/point light sources, batch rendering, and alpha channel composition. Models are saved and imported in MOD file format and can be exported into DXF file format. Rendered images can be saved in standard file formats, including TGA, PCX, GIF, TIFF, WIN, and BMP. Advanced users can upgrade to TEMPRA Modeler Professional. While TEMPRA Modeler is a 16-bit Windows application, the professional version is 32-bit capable, giving users increased speed. The program includes key-frame and timeline based animation support, for 8-bit FLI and FLC and 16- and 24-bit FLX animations. Additionally, TEMPRA Modeler Professional features single frame animation controller (VCR) support. TEMPRA Modeler Professional will retail for $995 and begins shipping in February 1994. TEMPRA is a division of Mathematica, Inc., which is filing to have its company name changed to TEMPRA, Inc. Upon completion of this transfer, Wolfram Research at 100 Trade Center Drive, Champaign, Illinois (217) 398-0700, is the sole owner of all rights in and to the trademark and name Mathematica. Products range from TEMPRA Vision (an educational tool) to TEMPRA CD-PRODUCER (a CD mastering system) and provide a broad-based multimedia solution used internationally by trainers, video producers, animators, advertisers, marketers, educators, resellers, and others.
