=============================================================================== TFC and TCV Version 2.2 11-1-93, 6:17 PM =============================================================================== Introduction: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The TFC Software helps you to easily keep a catalogue of all the floppy disks you are using to archive your shareware collection. TFC is designed to be simple and effective in use. For a quick start, just copy some files onto a floppy disk and type 'tfc a:' at the dos prompt. Then exit from tfc and type 'tcv' to view the result of what you just did. Further on in this document you find a more verbose explanation of how to use this package. This package contains two programs: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ > TFC.BTM - "Tobis Floppy Cataloger" a 4DOS BTM File -------------------> Creates a catalogue file from your floppies > TCV.EXE - "Tobis Catalogue Vision" a Turbo Vision Program -------------------> Lets you view and search this Catalogue file Together they enable you to easily maintain, view and search a Catalogue of the floppies on which you are storing your Programs. Requirements: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ > Floppy Drive > 4DOS 4.xx the ultimate command.com replacement. High Lights: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ > Automatically adds the 4DOS file Description to the Catalogue > Adds 1 Line per Disk, stating Disksize and Free Space. > Lets you view and search Your Catalogue on Screen with a SAA user interface based on Turbo Vision by Borland. > It is free. > All sources are included! Usage: ^^^^^^ Here follows a step by step guide on how to use TFC and TCV to keep track of your ShareWare and PD collection. Assuming you are using Floppy drive A:. INSTALLATION: ''''''''''''' > Copy the files TFC.BTM and TCV.EXE into a directory on your Harddisk. > If you include this directory into the PATH variable you will be able to access the programs from anywhere on your disk. PREPARATION:----------------------------- (befor you start using TFC ... ) '''''''''''' > Save the archives (*.ZIP, *.ARJ, *.ARC, ...) of your software onto floppy disks. > Attach 4DOS file descriptions to each file on the floppies. (use 4DOS: DESCRIBE a:*.* or 4DESC.EXE by David Frey, you find 4DESC.EXE in the 4UTILS archive from the same source you got TFC21.ZIP from) !!!! TFC can also handle Floppies containing undescribed Files. Just scan !!!! it like any other Floppy. If TFC will find that there are no !!!! descriptions at all. It will give you the choice to either describe !!!! all the files on the disk, or to only the disk Label plus <40 Char of !!!! description, you can provide right away, to the PROGS.TFC file. !!!! This is especially useful, if you have Disks, which you would like to !!!! see in the Catalogue, but contain files, to numerous, strange or !!!! stupid to describe each. > Label the floppies (LABEL a:) electronically and stick equal written labels onto the floppies. TFC will read the electronic Lable into its database. (eg DIRUTL_1, DIRUTL_2, GAMES, HHGTTG ...) SCANNING:------------------------------------------ (now TFC comes to life) ''''''''' > Start scanning your floppy collection using TFC. Just insert the 1st floppy into drive a: and write 'TFC a:' at the DOS prompt. > TFC scans now this floppy and asks you to insert the next one. > When you finish scanning, just push any key and TFC will stop. > Now TFC created the file PROGS.TFC in the same directory as TFC.BTM is stored. This file contains all the information collected from your floppies. It is in comma delimited format, so that it can be imported into many data base programs. VIEWING and SEARCHING:-----------------------(TCV or how to find the Floppy) '''''''''''''''''''''' > Type TCV and your personal disk Catalogue will be displayed, ready for viewing and searching. > Use the cursor keys to browse > Type in a word you are looking for. TCV will incrementally search for your word as you continue typing. . Press cursor [UP] or [DOWN] to find the PREVIOUS or NEXT match for the word you just typed. . Use [BACKSPACE] to correct the word you were typing. . Press [ESC] to abandon the word. > Press [RETURN] or the [Info] button to view more information about the entry which is currently focused. DISCLAIMER: ^^^^^^^^^^^ > This software is free and you can use it and share it with your friends. but you are not allowed to sell it or add it to a commercial product without written permission of the author. > You can change the BTM file if you like to, but leave my name and address in it! And eMail your additions ... > I am not liable to any damage the software does to your system ... :-( By the way it never did any damage to my PC. ;-) > If you like this software, find an error, have an suggestion for enhancement: Please Write, Fax or e-Mail it to me. > If you use the program, please send me a Picture postcard ... as I would like to know where my Software goes to.
