Revision History GolfLog v8.0 thru v8.3d ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Copyright 1992, 1993 * RiverBend SoftWare * All Rights Reserved ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ||| New in v8.3d 1.. Reformatted the Summary Report screen so the dollar amounts will show in a more readable form. Prior to this release, if the trailing figure in a dollar amount was a zero, it would not show the zero on the screen. 2.. Reformatted the Game Record screen for the same reason as indicated in item #1 above. 3.. Changed the maximum USGA Slope rating value from 140 to 155. The default value (if you don't enter one) has changed from a value of 130 to a value of 135. This will cover any course, from any Tee, you wish to enter into the database now. Some of the PGA courses have Slope values of 150 or more (from the Championship Tee's) and if you wish to record these courses, you may now do so. 4.. For those of you with slow machines, a blinking message now appears that says "Gathering data, please wait", after you select the Summary Report option or the Display Golfer Record option. This is just to let you know that GolfLog is indeed busy gathering and compiling the necessary data from all the Game Records you have in the database. If you have a large number of Game Records that GolfLog must search through, it may take a few seconds to gather and compile the data. The message just keeps you informed so you won't think GolfLog is loafing. 5.. Fixed a bug where the Golfer's Zip code would show as 11111 in some instances when viewing a Golfer Record at the Utility Menu. The only time it will now show as 11111 is if no Zip Code was entered when the record was first saved to the database. 6.. Also, please note that GolfLog will NOT run on a Macintosh! It is compiled for IBM and 100% IBM compatible clones. At this time, a version for the Mac is NOT envisioned. ||| New in v8.3c 1.. Completely revamped the Handicap Index routine! It no longer requires the User to input the scores! Beginning with this version (v8.3c), all the User need do is select the Golfer and then the Golfer's "home course" and GolfLog does the rest! If the selected Golfer has a minimum of 10 full (18 hole) games saved in the database, GolfLog will then check to see if the Golfer has 20 or more games saved. If the Golfer has 20 or more games saved, the Handicap Index is based on the last 20 games with the highest (worst) score and the lowest (best) score discarded. If the Golfer has at least 10 (but less than 20) game records saved, then the Handicap Index is based on the last 10 games with the highest and lowest scores discarded. This will provide a Handicap Index very close (maybe equal) to that done by the U.S.G.A. It will, for sure, provide a Handicap Index that is current "up to the minute". It is IMPORTANT to NOTE that when GolfLog searches for the last 10 or 20 games, it DOES NOT look at the date of the game or the date it was actually saved to the database. It simply picks the last 10 or 20 games stored in the database that match the selected Golfer's first and last name. It then sorts them in descending order (highest to lowest) and proceeds to compute the Index for the Golfer selected. Based on this, the user should ALWAYS ENTER GAMES AS SOON AFTER THEY ARE PLAYED AS POSSIBLE. If you enter a game that was played several weeks/months earlier (and you already have game records saved that were played recently), then this record will be used as one of the last 10 or 20 game records when the Handicap Index is figured. While it's possible to change the Handicap Index with the addition of just one more game, it's highly unlikely. In the majority of cases, at least the addition of 2 or more games is needed before a change in the Index figure will be seen and only then if the scores are considerably lower or higher than the other scores used previously. NOTE also that GolfLog DOES NOT USE the scores from 9 Hole games. ONLY the scores from full, 18 Hole games are used. This is probably the biggest difference in how GolfLog does the Handicap Index and how the U.S.G.A. does it (the U.S.G.A. doubles 9 Hole scores to get an 18 Hole score). The reason GolfLog uses only 18 Hole scores is that we feel it's a better test of the Golfer's ability to play a full 18 Hole game and record that score since more factors become apparent such as fatigue, weather, wind conditions, etc. It's very possible for a Golfer to come out early in the morning when there's no wind, the greens may be a little slower too, and play 9 Holes and shoot a much lower score than he/she would if he/she were to play a full 18 holes under various changing conditions (greens dry out and become faster, wind picks up, rain showers start/stop, etc.). 2.. GolfLog no longer accepts Par 3 courses into its database. A course must now have a minimum Par value of between 68 and 74 before it will be accepted in the database. If you have previously recorded Par 3 courses in the database, GolfLog will continue to recognize them. It just won't accept any more new ones. 3.. Added a few more items to the Misc. System Information screen. 4.. GolfLog can now detect if it's being run under Windows, IBM OS/2, DESQview or Dr. DOS. 5.. GolfLog can now detect the CPU type and the type of KeyBoard (standard or expanded) being used. The CPU types range from the NEC V20 to 80486. 6.. GolfLog now checks to see if EMS and/or XMS memory is present. The amount of free XMS and/or EMS (if any exists) is reported in the Misc. System Information Screen at the Utility Menu. 7.. GolfLog now reports more detail about the type of monitor in use. Previous versions just reported if the monitor was a color monitor or a monochrome monitor. Now, the type (VGA, EGA, CGA, Hercules, etc.) is also reported. NOTE Items 3 thru 7 probably aren't of much use to a Golfer however GolfLog needs to know these things when it first starts. Since there was room on the display page, now you will know too. ||| New in v8.3b 1.. Added a new option to the Utility Menu called "Course Records". This option presents the user with a display showing all information previously entered when adding a Course Record. This option was added due to several requests from registered users who wanted to verify the Course information stored in the database. 2.. Moved the "Golfer Records" option from the Main Menu to the Utility Menu. Now, before editing a Golfer Record, it will be much easier to review that record first to double check the information it contains. 3.. Added the option of including the Club or Pro Shop phone number to the Course Record. Also, after entering the information for a new Course Record, GolfLog will now display the number of Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 holes the course contains. To get this information into all your old Course Records it will be necessary to delete them and then re-enter them back into the database. It's not necessary that you do this, however the option is there if you feel you'd like to have this information available. Many users have stated that they'd like to have the Pro Shop phone number available in the Course Record (to get Tee times, etc.). 4.. It won't be noticeable but when adding a Game Record, the memory needed for each window inside the main window (the boxes for entering scores on the front and back sides, and the Wager box) has been reduced considerably and that used is returned immediately after the box is no longer required (although the window still remains visible). This speeds up the process somewhat but, as stated, it probably won't be noticeable to most users. 5.. The Summary display has had some minor changes made to provide the user with as much information as possible. ||| New in v8.3a 1.. Added a new function to the Utility Menu called "Edit Golfer Record". You can now edit the information shown in the GolfLog DataCard (Golfer Records). It is IMPORTANT to NOTE that when editing a Golfer's record you must re-enter ALL the information for the revised record. This function will be used most of the time to change a Golfer's age, address, phone number, etc. If you skip thru any of the prompts here, then the information from the skipped prompts will show up in the Golfer's revised record as being empty or have a value of zero (0). It's best to take a look at the Golfer's record from the "Golfer Records" option at the Main Menu before going to the Utility Menu to edit that record. This method will change in the future so you will only need to enter the information that you wish to change. 2.. Revised the Handicap Index function to run more efficiently and revamped the entire display screen for this function. The formula for determining the Handicap index has not changed however the point at which the computation is made after the key is pressed has been changed to speed the entire process up. Also, any memory not needed after the operation has started is returned "on the fly" which helps those of you who may be running short of available memory. 3.. As in item #2 above, all other operations that GolfLog performs now returns any unneeded memory (set aside at the start of the operation) "on the fly" as soon as the memory is no longer needed. GolfLog has been tweaked throughout to return unneeded memory at the very instant it's no longer needed by the operation in progress. 4.. Changed the "Save" options in all operations to read as: ave o/StartOver uit/NoSave Pressing "S" will save the record, pressing "N" will cause the operation to start over from the beginning and pressing "Q" will cause the operation to end without the record being saved. 5.. Changed the "Summary" and "Print Summary" operations to display/print distinctions between those Golfers who have entered records for both 9 and 18 hole games and those who have entered only 9 hole games or only 18 hole games. If both types are entered into a Golfers game record, then the Game Average values will reflect 18 hole games on one line and 9 hole games on the next line (A Golfer must have a minimum of two 18 hole games and two 9 hole games before this information will be displayed. NOTE that the "Hole Average" is for all holes (both 9 and 18 hole games). If a Golfer has entered and saved records for at least 2 games of each type (9 and 18 hole) the Summary Screen will now display up to 39 different items about the games the Golfer has saved. 6.. Changed the colors of the Review Game Record and Summary screens to be a bit more pleasing to the eye. These new color changes should also help those of you who are still using monochrome monitors. 7.. Fixed the problem some users were having with the F10 Key not working properly. Pressing to quit at anytime when a user is ADDING information will now work as it is supposed to. ||| New in v8.2f 1.. Strictly a maintenance release (fixing 1 bug caused 2 more)! The "Cancel Print" function now works properly in both the Print Record and Print Summary functions. Now hopefully all known bugs are fixed. If you are aware of a bug in GolfLog, PLEASE ADVISE so it can be corrected. GolfLog is tested extensively before each release but sometimes a bug can slip by unnoticed. 2.. Fixed the "Net Hole Avg" display line in the "Review Game Record" screen. This line was showing the Net Game average rather than the Net Hole average. The Net Game average and the Net Hole average are based on the Golfers Course Handicap on the date the game was played. If a Golfer does not have a valid Handicap Index and Course Handicap established then these two lines will show the actual (gross) game score and the actual per hole average. 3.. Fixed the Net Hole Average result in the "Print Game Record" screen for the same reasons as just listed above in #2. 4.. Rearranged the Print Summary output for a more readable report. Also, note that some items in the Print Summary and Print Record outputs only show up if the software is registered. This has always been the case however some users were not aware of this. ||| New in v8.2e 1.. This is mostly a maintenance release. The Summary Screen was rearranged (again). This time in an effort to group like subjects as close together as possible to make the Summary somewhat easier to follow. ||| New in v8.2d 1.. Changed the Utility Menu to conform to the same style as the Main Menu and added the "Quit GolfLog" option to the Utility Menu. 2.. Changed the way the three versions of the executable file are bundled in the archive. The XT version (formerly known as GOLF_XT.COM) is now GOLFLOG.COM. The 286 version is still named GOLF_286.COM and the 386/486 version is still named GOLF_386.COM If you're running the 286 or 386/486 version now, then you'll have to rename either of them to GOLFLOG.COM when updating to this version. You can, of course, leave them as they are and type the proper file name when you run GolfLog. This was done to help those folks out there who are not real sure what kind of computer they are using and are still unfamiliar with the DOS "RENAME" command. This way, since the XT version will run on any computer, they will be able to start using it immediately. 3.. GolfLog now creates and updates an internal file that keeps up with the first time this version was used and counts the number of times it has been used since the first time. This information is provided to you on the Miscellaneous Information screen available at the Utility Menu. 4.. Added additional information to the Miscellaneous Info. screen and divided it into three additional categories. These categories are: 1.. Database Information Displays the number of records in each database. 2.. System Information Displays information about your computer. 3.. Memory Status Displays information about the amount of available memory, memory used at present, the amount of stack space available and the amount of stack space used. 5.. Revised some of the internal code to make GolfLog perform its duties faster and to cause it to return the memory used for various functions when it's through performing those functions. 6.. Added a function that causes GolfLog to check your memory status upon initial startup. If you have less than 10,000 bytes of free memory available, GolfLog will advise you of this and give you a few pointers about increasing the amount of free memory. Even if you have less than 10,000 bytes of memory available, GolfLog will still perform. If you always have adequate memory, you will never see this advisory. 7.. Added a statement, appearing at initial startup, that says "Loading GolfLog". This will appear in the middle of your blank screen and is only there to advise those with slow machines that GolfLog is, in fact, loading. If you have a computer running at 33Mhz or faster, you probably won't ever see this. ||| New in v8.2c 1.. Increased the maximum number of Game Records from 200 to 250 (for registered users only). 2.. Added more information to the course Handicap screen (for registered users only). This screen now shows the USGA Slope and Rating for the selected Course along with the information it had previously displayed. 3.. Added internal routines to improve the accuracy of the validation routine when checking the "Key file" (for registered users only). Bogus and invalid Key files are now detected as soon as they are encountered. If the Key file is for the shareware version, it's no longer needed and is safely removed. 4.. Added internal routines to set the DOS attribute of the Key file (if it exists) and the configuration file to "Read Only" each time GolfLog is through using either of these files. Actually the attributes are all set to OFF just before GolfLog accesses these files and then back ON when access is no longer required. This will help in preventing these two files from being deleted accidentally when GolfLog is not in use. 5.. Improved the internal routines for initializing the printer when a user wants to print a Record, Summary, or the form for registering GolfLog. This fixed the bug that caused the XT and 286 versions on some machines to abort with an Error 11 when attempting to print a Summary. 6.. Changed the prompts at the "Add" screens to "S" for Save, = Start Over and "Q" to Quit. This replaces the old method of to save, to start over and to quit. 7.. Revised and recolored the Game Record and Game Score Card screens along with various "pick list boxes." 8.. Revised the Utility Menu Screen and added a "GolfLog Infor- mation" option which shows information about GolfLogs record of use, free memory available, stack space available, etc. 9.. GolfLog now checks your available free memory upon startup and warns you is you have less than 300K available. 10.. Revised the wording and amounts produced in the "wager" information shown at the bottom of the Summary display. If a Golfer has wagered on one or more games, the figures now reflect either: a.. The Net Amount Won (total won less total lost) and Gross Amount Won if the Golfer is ahead in winnings. or b.. The Net Amount Lost (total lost less total won) and Gross Amount Lost if the Golfer is behind in winnings. ||| New in v8.2b 1.. Expanded the Utility Menu to aid in editing or adding to the configuration file for GolfLog. 2.. Added a "Print Registration Form" at the Utility Menu. GolfLog will now print a User Registration form ready to be completed and mailed when you're ready to register GolfLog and unlock the other options that only registered users have access to. ||| New in v8.2a 1.. Added a configuration file requirement (that GolfLog creates) which will ask the user for the Printer Port number that he/she uses. This file is then opened and read when the user selects either the Print Record or Print Summary option from the Main Menu. If the user's port number remains the same, this file won't change. If GolfLog doesn't find the configuration file when it's first started, it will prompt the user to input the correct printer port number. Once this is done the first time, the user won't ever see this prompt again unless he/she deletes the configuration file by accident. 2.. Removed the requirement where the user must select the Printer Port number each time they wish to print a Record or Summary. This information is now contained in the configuration file and is gathered by GolfLog just before the printing operation begins. 3.. Added a menu option called "Utilities" which is only to be used when a user needs to change the port number of his/her printer. GolfLog supports LPT1, LPT2 and LPT3. 4.. Added a "Status" item in the "Golfer Records" display. When a Golfer's record is shown, it will show in the lower left corner, one of the following: Regular Golfer -------- Men Golfers under 50 years old Senior Golfer -------- Men Golfers 50 years old or older Junior Golfer -------- Any Golfer under 17 years old Regular Golfer, Lady -- Lady Golfers under 50 years old Senior Golfer, Lady --- Lady Golfers 50 years old or older 5.. Revamped the entire Course Handicap display screen to make it easier to read/understand. 6.. Provided more information about Handicap Index and Course Handicap in the Handicap Index displays. 7.. Changed the Review Records option to give the user the the opportunity to first select the Golfer whose Records are to be displayed then list only the records for the selected Golfer. 8.. Revised some of the internal code to cause GolfLog to display its screens a tad faster. ||| New in v8.1h 1.. Provided an "emergency exit" at ALL of the "PickList" screens (where you use UpArrow/DownArrow to select a Golfer, Game Record, Course Record, etc.). If you get to these screens and want to quit and return to the Main Menu, just press your Key and you will be safely returned without changing anything in the database. Most, but not all, of these screens will show the phrase "or to quit>." Even those that do not show this phrase can be exited by pressing the Key. 2.. Internal changes to gain more speed and use less memory (you should notice a big difference now). The "XT" version should run much faster on any machine and the "286" and "386/486" versions should fly on machines with their type CPU. 3.. Minor cosmetic changes (still tinkering) to some of the display screens. ||| New in v8.1g 1.. Revised the Summary screen and Print Summary function to include Low (best) 18 hole score and High (worst) 18 hole score. These scores will only show on the Summary screen and the printed Summary report IF the following two conditions exist: A. The Golfer selected has a minimum of 2 or more full 18 hole games recorded in the database. B. At least 2 of the games for the Golfer selected must have different scores. 2.. Revised code to require a Golfer to have a minimum of ten (10) full 18 hole games recorded in the database before a Handicap Index can be figured. Heretofore, it was only required that the selected Golfer have a minimum of 10 games saved irregardless if they were 9 or 18 hole games. Now, at least 10 of the games MUST be full 18 hole games. 3.. Revamped the User Manual (GOLFLOG.DOC) and added order form for customized versions of GolfLog. 4.. Minor cosmetic changes to various screens (I'll get 'em like I want 'em one of these days). ||| New in v8.1f 1.. For those of you who like to bet money on your golf games, two new prompts have been added to the Add Game option. They are "Money Won" and "Money Lost". When you see the "Money Won" prompt, either enter the amount won or if you lost money, press and you will get the "Money Lost" prompt. If you neither won nor lost money, press at the "Money Won" prompt then press again at the "Money Lost" prompt. If you had more than one wager going with other playing partners and you won on one wager and lost on another, then enter the amount won from the wager that was won at the "Money Won" prompt then enter the amount lost on the other wager at the "Money Lost" prompt. By pressing at each of these prompts without entering an amount, a zero is placed in each record for the amount won or lost. DO NOT enter a negative amount in the "Money Won" field such as -5.00 (meaning you lost $5.00). Simply don't enter any amount and press to get the "Money Lost" prompt. If you didn't lose any money, press without entering any amount to get to the next prompt. 2.. Added the necessary code to show the amount won or lost for each Game Record recorded. When GolfLog reads the game record datafile and sees that it's a record from a prior version of GolfLog (v8.0 thru v8.1e) it will show that no won/lost amount was recorded for that record. This same information will show up in the printed Game record. 3.. Added the necessary code to show the amount the Golfer is either wining or losing by on the Summary Screen and printed Summary Record. This is a cumulative amount with the amount lost subtracted from the amount won. If the Golfer has lost more than he/she has won, the amount lost will reflect total winnings subtracted from the total losses. As an example, if the Golfer has lost $15.00 over several games and won $8.50 over several more, the amount in the Summary Record will be shown as a $6.50 loss for the cumulative figure. The total amount won (if winnings exceed losses) not counting any losses is shown also. If losses exceed winnings, the total amount lost not counting any winnings will be shown along with the amount lost. 4.. Modified some of the coding to try and cause it to use less memory when running. GolfLog is not a memory hog but every attempt is made each revision to tweak the memory requirements and cause it to use even less. 5.. Fixed a bug that sometimes caused GolfLog not to close all its open files when returning to the Main Menu. If you've ever deleted a record and when returning to the Main Menu, GolfLog quit running and exited with an error message, this was the cause. Hopefully this is fixed and won't happen again! 6.. Cosmetic changes to various screens. ||| New in v8.1e 1.. Changed coding to allow for more than 50 Course Records in the Course Handicap List. 2.. Rewrote code for deleting Game Records to make it more efficient and to cause a backup copy of the Game Records to be saved into a file called GAMES.BAK when a Game Record is deleted. 3.. Cosmetic changes throughout. ||| New in v8.1d 1.. Increased the maximum Number of Courses in the registered version to 50. The shareware version still permits a maximum of 2 Course records 2.. Increased the maximum Number of Games in the registered version to 200. The shareware version still permits a maximum of 5 Game Records. 3.. Cosmetic changes throughout. ||| New in v8.1c 1.. Changed the code in the shareware versions to allow for the printing of Game Records and Summary. 2.. Cosmetic changes throughout. ||| New in v8.1b 1.. Removed the List Golfer option from the Main Menu and replaced it with the Course Handicap feature. This feature is available to registered users only. 2.. Changed number of Games allowed in the shareware version from 10 to 5. 3.. Minor cosmetic changes to various screens. ||| New in v8.1a 1.. Changed number of full (18 hole) games required to compute Handicap Index from 5 to 10. The code for the formula used to compute the index was changed also to compensate for the change in the number of games required. This should give an even more accurate handicap index. 2.. Added option to select Golfer and print his/her Summary of all games recorded. 3.. Added option of using F10 Key to quit any of the "add" screens to the "XT" version (GOLF_XT.COM). This was previously only available in the 286 and 386/486 versions. If you wish to quit and return to the Main Menu when at any of the "add" screens, just press then and you'll be returned to the menu. The record you were adding will not be saved. 3.. Minor cosmetic changes to various screens. ||| New in v8.0h 1.. Tweaked code to increase speed and use even less memory in all three (XT, 286, 386/486) versions. 2.. Rearranged selection windows for easier use when selecting records to review, print, etc. 3.. Minor cosmetic changes throughout. ||| New in v8.0g 1.. The file GL.KEY is no longer required in the shareware version only. It makes no difference if it's there or not in the shareware version, however it is still required when running the registered version of GolfLog. 2.. Removed the online Help function as it added additional overhead and wasn't being used by the majority of registered users. 3.. The only "F" Key active now is the Key and it's used to exit back to the main menu when adding information to the database. Just press then to quit to the main menu at any "add" screen. This only works on the two 'AT' versions (GOLF_286.COM and GOLF_386.COM). The F10 key to quit WILL NOT work on the XT version. 4.. Minor cosmetic changes in some of the screens. ||| New in v8.0f 1.. Reduced price of registered version from $39.95 to $32.95 The $3.00 Shipping/Handling charges still applies bringing the total cost of the registered version to $35.95 ||| New in v8.0e 1.. Removed requirement for the GOLFLOG.HLP file in the code for the 8086 XT version only. This file is still required in the 80286 and 80386/80486 versions. 2.. Removed the option of pressing the F10 Key to quit from the 8086 XT version only. This option is still available in the 80286 and 80386/80486 versions. 3.. Minor cosmetic changes in various screens. 4.. No changes were made to the 286 or 386/486 versions. ||| New in v8.0d 1.. Removed the built in Help function in the 'XT' version only. This function was too much of a load for XT machines. The built in Help function is still available in the 286 and 386/486 versions. 2.. Minor cosmetic changes in various screens. 3.. Added additional topics to the online help file (GOLFLOG.HLP). 4.. Added more details to the User Instructions (GOLFLOG.DOC). ||| New in v8.0c 1.. Changed hot key from F1 to F10 to quit at any point in the Add Game, Add Course, Add Golfer, and Handicap Index screens. Now just press F10 then at any point in these screens to return to the Main Menu. 2.. Added online help option. To bring up a list of topics press F1 then scroll the list using the UpArrow and Down Arrow Keys to highlight the selected topic. At that point press to cause a window to appear giving a brief description of the topic selected. This option has added additional memory requirements to GolfLog. For GolfLog to run comfortably, a minimum of 300k memory should be available when GolfLog is started. 3.. You must have the file called GOLFLOG.HLP in the same directory with GOLFLOG.COM and GL.KEY before GolfLog v8.0c will run. 4.. To exit from the Help screens, press the key. ||| New in v8.0b 1.. Added option of pressing F1 then to quit at any point in the Add Game, Add Course, and Add Golfer screens. ||| New in v8.0a 1.. Changed Summary report to show NET Score and NET Hole Average ONLY if the Golfer selected has a valid Handicap Index. ~~~~ 2.. Added an internal change in the code to cause a flag to be reset in each Golfer's datafile when a Handicap Index has been determined by GolfLog. 3.. Minor cosmetic changes to various screens. >> NOTE: (For registered users only) If you're already using >> GolfLog v8.0 then you need to go back and have GolfLog >> re-compute the Handicap Index. >> This will cause a flag to be reset in the individual >> Golfer's datafile so the correct information will be >> shown in the Summary Report. =========================================================================== N O T I C E ~~~~~~~~~~~ GolfLog will run best if you run the proper version according to the type machine you have. If you have a 386 or 486 machine then always run the 386 version (GOLF_386.COM) rather than the XT or 286 version. Also, it's a lot easier to select the version you plan to use then rename that copy to GOLFLOG.COM using the DOS "RENAME" command as in "RENAME GOLF_386.COM GOLFLOG.COM" =========================================================================== GolfLog v8.0 thru GolfLog v8.3d ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you're using a version of GolfLog prior to v8.0 then you must start over from the beginning and add new Game and Course Records as v8.0, thru v8.3d WILL NOT read the datafiles that were created by the earlier versions (v1.0 - v7.8).
