	   Stac Launches Rescue Mission for DoubleSpace Users

CARLSBAD, Calif., May 10, 1993 — Stac Electronics (NASDAQ:STAC), the
leading supplier of high performance data compression, today
announced a Special Edition of Stacker 3.1 for Windows & DOS.  The
program is designed to help users of MS-DOS 6.0 avoid a variety of
problems, including loss of data, that have been attributed to the
new operating systems DoubleSpace compression utility.

"With the growing number of reports of the possible problems that
users could encounter  with DoubleSpace, we felt we had no
alternative but to put together a rescue mission to go to the aid of
those 2 million or more MS DOS 6.0 users before its too late," said
John Bromhead, Stac’s director of marketing.  "We have developed
technology that can almost instantaneously retrofit all the benefits
of the Stacker File System to a DoubleSpace drive and hopefully
preserve both the users data and the good name and reputation of the
data compression industry."

The Special Edition installs the latest version of Stac’s
award-winning compression software, Stacker 3.1, on systems running
MS-DOS 6.0, and within minutes automatically updates the DoubleSpace
drive to include the proven safety features of the Stacker file
system.  All new files written to the updated DoubleSpace drive will
then utilize the proven Stacker LZS compression technology.  Users
also have the option to fully convert their existing Doublespace
drives to use Stacker LZS compression and realize even larger disk
capacity.

Scheduled to begin shipping in June, the Special Edition will be
available through retail channels for the suggested promotional price
of $49.95 through August 31 and for $99.95 after that.

Stacker 3.1 --- the most recent addition to the Stacker line of data
compression products for DOS, Windows, Macintosh and OS/2 computers--- 
is based on Stac’s patented LZS_, which is relied upon daily by more than 
4 million users worldwide.

Stacker 3.1 Special Edition is for MS-DOS 6.0 only.  The program
seamlessly integrates the Stacker LZS_ compression technology into
MS-DOS 6.0 by taking advantage of special operating system features. 
As a result, Stacker drivers are transparently loaded before
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.This eliminates any risk of
accidental deletion by the user and allows all standard DOS commands,
such as DIR and CHKDSK, to work directly on Stacker drives.

In addition to its superior compression and performance over
DoubleSpace,Stacker 3.1 Special Edition also provides the additional
Windows functionality and disk optimization features that have made
Stacker for Windows and DOS, the No. 1 selling utility, according to
PC/Computing, April, 1993.  These features, which evolved over three
generations of product development in response to user needs,
include:

o The Windows Stackometer_:  Graphical gauges that allow Windows
  users to monitor disk capacity, compression ratio and fragmentation
  levels continuously, in real time.

o Flexible Setup:  Express Setup installs Stacker with a few
  keystrokes or mouse-clicks; Custom Setup allows users to tailor
  Stacker for optimal system performance.

o Compression Tuning:  Allows users to optimize their systems for
  maximum speed (on older, slower computers) or maximum compression
  ratio (on newer, faster systems).

o Stacker Anywhere_:  Allows users to read and write to any removable
  media on any PC, even one where Stacker is not installed.
