_________________________________________________________________ STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE STACKER AND QEMM 7.0 (Applies to Stacker 3.1 for Windows and DOS and MS-DOS 6) STAC FAX 31101 (08/93) _________________________________________________________________ BACKGROUND If you use QEMM 7.0 to load STACKER high while SMARTDRV.EXE 4.0 (from Windows 3.1) is running, the system will not be able to access the Stacker drive. You may see a message like: Invalid unit reading drive {drive} where {drive} indicates the Stacker drive. According to Quarterdeck Office Systems (QEMM 7.0), this problem arises only when SMARTDRV.EXE from WINDOWS 3.1 is in memory. SMARTDRV is unable to locate STACKER's "footprint" in memory, so it ignores STACKER's drives. Use the procedure below to force the "footprint" to be left behind for SMARTDRV to locate. PROCEDURE To let SMARTDRV recognize your Stacker drives, add the QEMM undocumented "/STUB" switch to the STACHIGH.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file. Use the following procedure: 1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file to modify to QEMM device driver line. Type: ED C:\CONFIG.SYS 2. Locate a line that looks something like this: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 C:\STACKER\STACHIGH.SYS 3. Use the arrow keys to position the cursor, then modify the line to look like this: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /STUB /R:1 C:\STACKER\STACHIGH.SYS 4. Save the CONFIG.SYS file and exit to DOS. 5. Restart your computer. Note QEMM has a maintenance release (7.01) that solves this problem. Contact Quarterdeck for details. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright 1993, Stac Electronics Page 1 of 1
