_______________________________________________________________ STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE Title: CONVERTING REMOVABLE DOUBLESPACE DISKS (Applies to Stacker for Windows & DOS 3.1) STAC FAX 31601 (6/93) _______________________________________________________________ BACKGROUND Stacker's Setup converts only mounted, fixed DoubleSpace drives. However, Stacker's DCONVERT program easily converts a removable disk, such as a floppy disk, a Bernoulli, or a SyQuest. The following procedure assumes you've already installed Stacker. SOLUTION For this example, let's assume that Drive G: is a Bernoulli drive that was compressed with DoubleSpace. In the conversion procedure, you will check the drive for any pre- existing problems, run a program called DCONVERT to convert the drive, and then mount the new Stacker drive. NOTE: Because it is not yet a Stacker drive, Drive G does not appear in Stacker's drive map. Check for any pre-existing problems 1. If you are in Windows, please exit to DOS. The procedure works only under DOS. 2. Insert the removable disk into its drive. 3. Check the drive for any pre-existing problems. At the DOS prompt, type: CHKDSK G: Let the DOS CHKDSK utility fix any problems it finds. Convert the drive to a Stacker drive 1. Find the name of the compressed volume file by typing: DIR G: /AH 2. Look for a filename such as DBLSPACE.000. Note the name to use in the next step. _______________________________________________________________ Copyright 1993, Stac Electronics Page 1 of 2 3. Type: DCONVERT /C G:\DBLSPACE.000 where DBLSPACE.000 is the drive to be converted to a Stacker drive. IMPORTANT! DO NOT INTERRUPT THE CONVERSION PROCESS! If you do not let DCONVERT finish, you may lose data. Mount the new Stacker drive DCONVERT converts the drive into a Stacker drive. The name of Stacker's "volume file" is STACVOL.DSK. If you're using only one removable drive, Stacker Setup automatically allowed for it. So, when you insert your removable disk into the drive, Stacker automatically mounts it. TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF STACKER SAFETY Stacker Optimizer can recompress your data safely, giving you double the disk capacity without the DoubleSpace risks. To recompress your data with the Stacker Optimizer: 1. At the DOS prompt, type: STAC 2. Choose Stacker Optimizer. 3. Select the drive you want to recompress. 4. Choose Restack. Stacker recompresses the data on the selected drive. _______________________________________________________________ Copyright 1993, Stac Electronics Page 2 of 2
