_________________________________________________________________ STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE DCONVERT SAFETY CHECK ERRORS (Applies to Stacker 3.1 for Windows & DOS) STAC FAX 31605 (09/20/93) _________________________________________________________________ BACKGROUND For added safety, Stacker lets you verify the integrity of your Dblspace drives before converting them. If you get an error during the safety check, it means DCONVERT has found a problem which must be corrected before the drive can be converted. This document shows you how to correct the most common safety check errors. SOLUTION Disable memory-resident programs that may interfere with DCONVERT Find and delete corrupted files Disable memory-resident programs that may interfere with DCONVERT Some memory-resident programs may lock files on a drive. Stacker's safety check returns an error when it cannot open such a file. An example of this is an Anti-Virus program locking it's own definition file so nothing will tamper with it. 1. Bypass your startup files to temporarily disable memory- resident programs. To do this, restart your computer. When MS-DOS displays the following text: Starting MS-DOS ... press and release the F5 key, or press and hold down the SHIFT key. Your computer will start without memory-resident programs. 2. If you encountered the error during initial Stacker setup, run setup again. If you encountered the error while running DCONVERT on an unmounted or removable drive, run the DCONVERT program again. Find and delete corrupted files One or more files may have been corrupted by Dblspace itself. One way to find all such files is to "NUL copy" all the files on the Dblspace drive. "NUL copy" forces DOS to go through all the motions of copying a file without actually writing anything to your hard drive. To find files corrupted files, do the following: 1. If a printer is available, print the directory structure of the Dblspace drive. At a DOS prompt, type: DIR C:\ /S >PRN where D is the Dblspace drive letter. 2. Copy the contents of every directory on your disk to NUL. For example, to copy the DOS directory on drive D to NUL, type: COPY D:\DOS\*.* NUL Repeat this command for every directory on your Dblspace drive. 3. "NUL copy" stops on files that cannot be copied and prompts "Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?" Take note of the file name, then press F to resume copying. 4. Delete the corrupted files. 5. If you encountered this error during initial Stacker setup, run setup again. If you encountered this error while running DCONVERT on an unmounted or removable drive, run the DCONVERT program again. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright 1993, Stac Electronics
