INTRODUCTION AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND RsaNET was the brain child of Chris Kenward and Rob Fisher and the Network was born in March 93 with just 4 nodes. (Two in Durban, one in JHB and one in P.E.) THE ORIGINAL BBS's OF RsaNET were SOFTEL (National hub) Starlight BBS NetLINE Flagship BBs (Transvaal HUB) RsaNET's Mission statement is simple : Communication is the name of the game ! Many thanks to Renaldo from whom this one liner was stolen ! RsaNET is a network of friendly Sysops who subscribe to the the Mis- sion Statement and who are prepared to do their bit towards the open- ing up of free flowing COMMUNICATION. STANDARDS WITHIN RsaNET: Transmission of the RsaNET Network is via the QWK mail packet. Import and export of mail for transmission can be done by a few utilities, the most popular of which is QNet for PCBoard. The important feature of any mail tosser for RsaNET is that it must be able to handle the origin line properly as WELL as respect the NETSTATUS flag. RsaNET Origin tagline must be in the following format : þ QNet 3.0 þ RsaNET þ BBS Name þ Town þ Number An RsaNET BBS must please display the RsaNET LOGO either as a bulletin or preferably part of the logon sequence. GENERAL RULES ON RsaNET 1) Keep it clean. 2) No "flames" or personal attacks. 3) Keep to the topics of the echo. 4) Be friendly and helpful. If you can answer a plea for help then dive in and do so. 5) Moderation must be done by Moderators only. 6) High ascii is welcome. 7) Taglines are very welcome, although it would be nice to see people using different ones occasionally, as we all hate seeing the same old ones over and over. Especially that tagline - "So long and thanks for the fish !" It must be noted however that multiple taglines are NOT allowed. An RsaNET message should have one tear line (the three ---'s), One tagline (optional) and an origin line. 8) Please try to keep quoting of original messages to a mini- mum, and hopefully try to keep your "signatures" from being too long and fancy. Fancy signatures are great to see from time to time but people get tired very quickly of seeing fancy signatures and same old taglines. 9) No private messages are allowed other than in RsaMAIL. 10) No ANSI mail may be left in any area other than those desig- nated specifically for it. The only conference that allows coloured ansi at this point is RsaBBS when in the form of a BBS advert. 10) No activity that violates any Laws of the country. 11) No activity that in any way advocates software piracy. 12) Discussions of any other BBS Networks is allowed as well as partial quoting of messages. However out and out bashing of any networks and or People and or Software is NOT ! THE RsaNET HIERARCHY RsaADMIN Rob Fisher Ian Gerada and the HUB Sysops. National Hub Netline Flagship Ian Gerada Natal Hub Chatterbox BBS Richard Pillay Eastern Cape Hub P.E. Technikon Renaldo Rheeder RsaNET Marketing David Segall RsaNET is not a democracy but rather a friendly club run by the par- ticipating Hubs and Nodes. In the unlikely event of an unresolved ar- gument on policy or any other matter relating to RsaNET the final decision will be made by Rob Fisher. All participating Sysops are en- couraged to take part in the formulation of polices by partaking in discussions in the RsaNET echo. (The echo for RsaNET Sysops only.) RsaNET users are also very welcome to add their piece to the formula- tion of policies ! JOINING RsaNET While it is a private amateur network, RsaNET is open to any SysOp who agrees to follow the RsaNET Policy and is serious about the free flow of communication. In order to become an RsaNET member, the SysOp must first obtain the RsaNET application program from any of the Hubs. The file is named RsaAPPXX.ZIP. The program will generate a text file which must be uploaded to his nearest Hub for processing in the form of a message. Thereafter the application will find it's way into the RsaADMIN con- ference were the application will be considered. WHERE TO UPLOAD YOUR APPLICATION Should you decide to join RsaNET, please upload your application form to the national hub. NetLINE Flagship BBS Tel : +27-11-789-6085/6/7/8 upload your application in the form of a message on the main board. ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT International sysops wishing to join the network may submit an application via fax to the following number +27-11-789-6081. International sysops would then be required to dial the national hub in order to check if there application has been accepted. With international BBS's joining into RsaNET please add your name and password to the application form, so that the national hub can add you as a user, should your application be successful THERE ARE A FEW REQUIREMENTS Currently the QWK packet import and export utilities are only avail- able for PCBoard, Wildcat, Remote Access and TriBBS. However Sysops who run other systems and have access to utilities to handle the im- port and export of mail via the QWK packet will be considered after testing and approval of the utility. RsaNET BBS's MUST be 24 hour Boards. After Hours boards will not be considered. BBS's must be over 6 months old. More than anything else the Sysop must be ACTIVE and be prepared to motivate his users to partake in the RsaNET echoes. This point is ab- solutely critical ! Think not what can RsaNET do for me (and it can do a lot), think more like what can I do for RsaNET ? A Sysop will be responsible for his users. And by this I mean that a Sysop will be responsible for restricting the access of certain in- dividuals from certain conferences as instructed by RsaADMIN on advice from a Moderator or Sysop complaint. RESTRICTED CONFERENCES There are several conferences that are restricted to certain positions within RsaNET. For example, RsaMOD is an echo for Moderators and RsaNET sysop's only. It may not be read or seen by anyone who is not an RsaNET Moderator. See RsaCONF.TXT for the full list of conferences. IF YOU ARE GOING OFF-LINE If your node will be off-line for longer than two days, inform your Hub as soon as possible. If you will be leaving your system unattended for an extended period of time (such as while you are on holiday), you should notify your HUB. TERMINATION of RsaNET status. Apart from the obvious, a BBS's RsaNET status will be terminated if a node is found to be continually problematic and inactive. RsaNET is a free flowing communication medium for the active BBS's and their users. Daily Mail runs to a Hub are imperative ! If a Node is consistently erratic with mail runs his feed WILL be cut. HAVE FUN ! Above all have fun and enjoy ! We are all in this for enjoyment !
